I saw two different explanations, one that said she married Moses Shinn then Samuel Busby. Another had it the other way around. Do you have any idea how old Samuel was when they got married? He died right away. He could have married Esther because Moses Shinn dumped her. Maybe she cheated on Moses with Samuel. Or maybe she cheated on Moses with somebody else, and old Samuel Busby married her to give the child a name. (Seems like John H. Busby could be anybody's son.) I only saw one Samuel that nobody referred you to yet, and that was Samuel Busby, son of Joseph Busby in "Conquest," wherever that may be. 1. [Busbee Busby] Will of Benjamin Busbee: Freedom for Ned
    2. This is some information I found today at Washington Memorial Library in Macon, Ga. In a book entitled "In My Father's House Are Many Mansions-Family and Community of Edgefield County, S. C. by Orvill V. Burton pg. 393. Subject: manumission of slaves. "Between 1820 and 1840 manumission could be granted only by the state legislature. Very few blacks were freed in this 20 year span. Even before 1820, records suggest that manumission was difficult. Between 1815 and 1823, six separate petitions were presented to the General Assembly on behalf of certain slaves by two Edgefield slaveowners and later by their excutors. All petitions were denied. For example, the petitions on behalf of a slave of Benjamin Busbee dated 1 Jan. 1815, 29 Nov. 1815 and 5 Dec. 1815 and for the slaves of Benjamin Ryan dated 12 Dec. 1816, 15 Nov. 23, and Dec. 1823". So it looks as if Ned, the slave of Benjamin Busbee, did not obtain his freedom after all. Does anyone on the list have access to some of these old legislature records of South Carolina? Maybe some more information can be gleaned from them. Barbara Grizzle

William Reese was born about 1780 and so I suspect his brothers are just older or slightly younger than he was. Does anyone have this Miles wife's name? Susannah, Miles (step) mother, would have been younger than Benjamin Busbee and possibly still alive. Or it could have been another Susannah entirely? David Shirley and Drusilla Busby had something like 7 children when they lived in Wayne Co., MS and one of the sons was Hamilton Shirley and another was Zachariah Shirley. I'm seeing now that there's an unaccounted for daughter in the Jeremiah Busby and Phoebe (Miles) Busby household. This Jeremiah is a son of Zachariah Busby who came from SC to Wayne Co., MS. I forget the particulars of people who are not the people I'm searching for, but I did notice that there was a Busby fellow who was a merchant in New Orleans and had a son who was born in Florida. You might have posted that too! I don't live in Louisiana anymore (sigh of relief), so I can't remember where St. Tammany or Caddo Parishes are, but the Shirley family ended up founding a town called DeRidder.
