I must be the only one out there who has BURRES? My step dad is a BURRES, I know It was spelled diffretley way back I have no idea when or why we spell it different, anybody? Jackie
Hi: The different spellings have occurred because of the way the name sounds. Years ago when some of our ancestors were not educated they would accept whatever was written. Some family names were even spelled differently in the family Bible. I don't think they were concerned about it years ago. I found my BURRIS ancestors in the census as BURROWS until my grandfather's generation got the name back on track again. My g-grandfather BURRIS signed his name with an X, so I assume that his father couldn't read or write either. However, the clerk or minister, correctly spelled GGrandfathers name on the marriage certificate. Hope this helps you to see how things used to be.
