On the Indians living as whites....there were also blacks that lived as whites or they lived as Indians. I read this in a book on black slaveowners in South Carolina (pre-Civil War). Some of the census info used in this book lists blacks as whites. Hi Sally No I don't Know who William H. Burris, Sr. parents are that is what I'm trying to find out. I just found out that according to the 1850 census he was born in Virginia. What info do you have for your John Burris do you know the siblings of John and the parents? Hope to here from you soon Will Thanks for the reply to my posting
Hi Will.... Sorry I can't help with information of Orinda Starlin...but I believe you're William H. Burris, SR. could possibly be a brother to my John b. Washington Co., OH 1812. Do you know who Whilliam's parents were??? Please let me know if you know. Sally
Hi Will. Just thought I would let you know something about nicknames, etc. I noticed that you gave the name of Mary Polly as a BURRIS. "Polly" is a nick name for Mary. I don't know who started that, but you can easily get confused with the name(s). One time it may give her name as Polly and other times it may read as Mary. While I am on the subject of nicknames....you may also find legal documents giving their nickname and sometimes they may have listed more than one nickname and use it sometimes. I found that happened to my maternal grandfather. His marriage record list him as Jodie, his death cert. list him as Joda (what his wife called him) and when I found his birth cert. it was listed as Jos. L. CAREY. His marriage certificate also had his last name as LEARY and someone had scratched through it at the courthouse. That was due to the fancy handwriting they had in the years past. Hope this helps you. Good luck on your search. BURRIS/BURROWS is a real challenge. Hi List I just found out that this Burris was born in Virginia according to the Watertown, Washington County, Ohio 1850 census so I thought that I would put this out to see what came back to me. Family story: In early times our great grandfather Burris ran away from his parents and home in Ireland, at the age of 15 yrs. to go to America to find his two brothers who had gone before him. He got on a boat thinking it an American vessel and that he would soon find his brothers, but instead he was aboard an English Man of War fighting against America. They put him at firing a cannon were they kept him at the breech of a cannon for seven yrs. before he was allowed to land, during this time he had all of the flesh shot from his right hip by a cannon ball and carried the scar the rest of his day. He finally got to America and settled in Washington, County, Ohio, but he never found or heard tell of his two brothers. He married here an reared a large family: Unknown Burris and Unknown spouse children Mary Polly Burris married John L Webster 1-14-1821 in Washington County, Ohio James Burris married Mrs. Harriett Atkinson 1-16-1826 in Washington County, Ohio Robert Burris (Burrows) married Orinda Starlin Lucy Burris married Unknown Mc Neal John Burris Thomas Burris born abt 1800 married Lucy Bellows 8-23-1832 in Washington County, Ohio William H. Burris born 12-22-1801 VA married 1. Marria Bellows 9-25-1830 m2 Orinda Starlin m3 Martha E Brabham 1842 This is the Burris that was listed born in VA. What I would like to know is who the first unnamed Burris is and mother of these Burris and the dates a long with any other info for there is a Brabham reunion this next weekend that I'm going to and these to family names are intertwined so I was hoping to find more info be fore going thanks Will
Yes maybe the elusive BURRIS ancestors will start to emerge for us all so we can record them as meant to be. I have been hitting a 'brick wall' for near 5 yrs now in trying to find anything on my husband's g grandfather Walter L. BURRIS. He was b.ca.1883 TX or I.T. and i do not have his parents names or any other family names. He m. 5 Mar 1903 in Cumberland I.T.(thank God i found a copy of his marriage license) to Willie May ABLES. They brought up 9 children in Cumberland area of Indian Territory. Supposedly our Walter BURRIS helped build the Gold Depository of Ft. Knox. He got the flu the year it was fatal for many and d.ca.1919. I am not sure if he had brothers, etc. and have no idea of his parents names yet..... I did find him and his family in only one census so far=1910 Bryan Co OK Census listed as white showing he was born in TX and his father and mother were born in TX. Family hearsay according to my husband has been there was Native American in his line. So far no documentation shows up for him. There are many Indians that chose to live as whites, for they had more freedom. I want to find more data on this line, so i can verify his heritage and find his parents. Have you ever read Census Standards given the enumerators for Native Americans 1850-1920? It is interesting to note: www.accessgenealogy.com/native/censusrules.htm Any hints or other data you may have to share, please do. Hi List I'm sending this to two list the Washington County, Ohio and the Burris list for I hope to get a hit quicker that way. This is what I'm looking for Orinda Starlin info, what I have is that she married William H Burris, Sr. his birth 12-22-1801 died 1878 he was all so married twice before Orinda and that was Maria Bellows on 9-25-1830 in Washington County, Ohio and then Martha E Brabham 1842 and Orinda all so Married Robert Burrows is how it is listed but it should be Burris and this Robert was William brother Robert and Orinda married 12-4-1834 Washington County, Ohio. What I would like to find is who her parents were and the dates and what ever I can find out on this person. I did find that a William Starlin married 2-5-1824 in Washington County, Ohio he married Betsey Taylor now could that be her brother or cousin? any help will be appreciated Will
