Hi: The different spellings have occurred because of the way the name sounds. Years ago when some of our ancestors were not educated they would accept whatever was written. Some family names were even spelled differently in the family Bible. I don't think they were concerned about it years ago. I found my BURRIS ancestors in the census as BURROWS until my grandfather's generation got the name back on track again. My g-grandfather BURRIS signed his name with an X, so I assume that his father couldn't read or write either. However, the clerk or minister, correctly spelled GGrandfathers name on the marriage certificate. Hope this helps you to see how things used to be. Hi Betty, I have not found any of that information and have searched diligently for information on this family. I had wondered if they went to Iowa and that is who my Grandfather lived with until he married Eliza Robinson in Tama City, Tama County, Iowa in 1878. I can't find any record of that though. Looking for William D. Burris, b 1869 in Elk Creek, Grayson Co, VA, son of Thomas Burris and Nancy Caroline Hines. Married Effie T. Jackson in 1894 in Grayson Co, had five children: Lester, Clarence, Emmet, Blanche, and Conn. He seems to have vanished shortly thereafter. This man is my husband's great-grandfather and I am interested in his family line. Any help would be greatly appreciated. My Burris line started out with probably Henry Burris in Fleming Co KY. He had sons Henry b. ca.1793 KY, James 1796 KY and Seth Curtis b. ca. 1800 and there may have been a fourth son, Jesse. All of the sons went to Daviess Co Indiana. James's family went about 1830 and Seth Curtis about 1840. I am not sure when the other two came to Daviess Co IN. If anyone has Burris family members in Fleming Co KY or Daviess Co IN, I would like to hear from you. Hi. She may have been born after the census taker had gathered their info. Also, remember to check for the different spellings. I found my BURRIS family that had their names spelled as BURROWS. Keep in mind that many of our early ancestors did not know how to read or write and just accepted whatever was recorded. Just a little bit of info., a few years ago I found the BURRIS name spelled 21 ways. So be patient, you will find it. I have been searching for years for the parents of my great grandmother, ARMELDA J. BURRIS DEPEW. She was born in 1840 and the census for later years states that she was born in Indiana. However, I cannot find a Burris family in Indiana in the 1840 census who had an infant daughter born that year. I believe her parents were born in KY and OH. She married Joseph M. Depew in Iowa in 1856, and they later settled in MO where she died in 1888 in Dallas County. If anyone knows of a BURRIS family who had a baby girl born in 1840, I would love to search the name to see if I can make a connection. Thanks. DPeirsol

You are correct he was a descendant of Solomon Burris, Sr. and Judith Taylor, he was their 4th great grandson. I would be very interested in exchanging information with you. I have been working on my genealogy for 15 years and I still have a lot of holes but I also have a lot of information. Keep up the good work!! I'm trying to locate information on my 4th gr, grandfather, Joshua Burris (Burroughs and other various spellings) born 1800. Married Mary Barnhill July, 1822 in Cumberland Co. NC. By 1840 they are in Meriwether Co. GA where their daughter, Mary Ann married John C. Burch. In the 1850 census they moved to Randolph Co. AL. Mary Barnhill's mother was also named Mary. The two are listed in the 1870 Randolph Co. census where Mary Barnhill Burroughs is 85 years old and her mother Mary is 105! Any information would help. Thank you. Kathy California

My husband's g grandfather is Walter L. BURRIS, b.ca.1883, I.T. or TX. He m. 5 Mar 1903 Cumberland, I.T. to Willie May ABLES and they brought up 5 children in this Chickasaw Nation. = Rosalie, Calvin J., Mable Juanita(my husband's grandmother), John Paul, Mary Maxine. Walter however dies of the deadly flu ca.1919. We know very little about him and been working on finding ANY data on him for years now. I have no idea of his parents names or if he had bros and sisters. Family hearsay says he helped build the Gold Depository in Ft. Knox, but i have not found any data to support that yet. His widowed wife married (2) J.W. PLUNKETT 10 Aug 1919 and they moved to TX. I hope i can find any data referring to the children i listed about and hope their descendants may know some family history or know the names of Walter's parents.....
