Thx. for your reply, Fay, I hate to seem to be a pill about this, but if the Matthew Burris shown with the Gaylor HH. in 1880 Campbell Co., is the bro. of Martha, and the son of Jackson and Luvana, then who is the son Madison Burris shown with Luvana, Nancy, and Marintha, in 1880 Anderson Co. Fay, I guess I missed your reply earlier. thx. however, I wondered if there was any other record that shows Jackson Burris and Lavina Beach as this Matt Burress parents. According to the funeral home record shown below, the mother was unknown. Could this Matt Burress be the same as a Matthew Burris in 1880 TN Campbell Co. census, instead of Jacksons son? Matt seems a short name, more for Matthew than for Madison. Just wondering. Guess I am still hoping that my Madison belongs to Jackson and Lavina. Any info appreciated. thx. Burries was in the area of Franklin, IN (Johnson Co) from the late 1800's till his death in 1901. He and Joshua and Lewis (2 of his sons) bought and sold large tracts of land, as did Ralph (my husband's grandfather). All of them raised horses for the women's colleges in the eastern US and/or for harness racing. Two of the families into which, or with which the Burries married (Hamner and Vandivier) were from Virginia, but had quite a significant representation in the same area of Indiana during that same time period. Where were your folks during the mid-1800's ? My mother was a genealogist in Mississippi and used to talk about how both with poor penmanship and/or illiteracy the spelling of many family names was changed over time. I was a Melton. She said that Milton, Middleton, and Melton were probably all the same name, at one time. I think of that often as I read about the Burries and Burris and Burres and Burress, and, even Burroughs spellings. I hope to hear how the information I've sent "fits" with what you know about your family! Keep in touch.

His oldest son, Lewis, was born in Ohio but all the rest of his children were born in IN, in and around Franklin, in Johnson or Brown Co. I have a record of a land grant/deed to Lewis in 1903 and one to Joshua (my husband's ggrandfather) in Johnson Co, in 1897. Lewis and Wm. T sold some property in 1891, also in that area. And, Wm. T. sold 40 acres in 1898 to Francis C. Pick. The folks in Johnson Co. Historical Society (I think)--in Johnson Co Library Genealogical area, are very helpful and interested in helping--for a very nominal fee. Let me know if you find any connections between our folks! And, good hunting!
I have in my possession a list from the BURRIS family Bible. The family come from an area around Castledawson which is in the south east of County Londonderry, Ireland. Anyone on the list from this area? Ross Fulton rwfulton@iinet.net.au

Our oldest Burries/Burris had a large family, and a son named John. I can't locate any dates on him, though. William T. Burries and Margaret V Watson were his parents, Wm. b. in MD, Margaret b. in VA. Both died in IN, she in 1897, he in 1901. She's buried in Brown Co, IN. We haven't been able to find a tombstone for him, but presume he's buried where she is.

You have taken an interesting new approach to finding family! Most of our Burries/Burris were in/around Franklin, IN, and were land owners and horse breeders ( not "horse traders", I hope!). I don't know of any of them being involved in road building. One son of my husband's g,g,grandfather fled Franklin after being in a fight because he though he'd killed his fight opponent (which he hadn't). He moved to Iowa (or, Idaho, some say) and changed the spelling of his name--they thought to Burris (from Burries), but, perhaps, from Burries to Burres. Good luck on your road builders research!

But, I don't think it's your fellow. Ours was a son of our oldest Burries, William T. Burries. One of his 6 children, Joshua, was my husband's great, great grandfather. George, born in 1872, was one of Joshua's brothers. Most of these Burries lived most of their lives in and around Franklin, IN, and George is one of the ones who is buried in Franklin. If your George and ours are related, yours might be his son. There appeared to be lots of moving back and forth between IN and KY in those days. Good luck!

He was married to Margaret V Watson, b. VA; d. IN, 1897--buried in Brown Co, IN. I don't know Wm. T.'s parents names, but they were both said to have been born in MD, too (as per 4 US Census records). Perhaps your Margaret was Wm. T's aunt, or some such. Wish I had something to really help you!

(we think for thomas) Burries/Burris, was born in MD, as were both of his parents (whose names we do not know, nor where in MD any of them were born). He was born about 1830, as he died in Franklin, IN, in 1901, at 70 years of age. He was married to Margaret V (for Vandivier, we think) Watson, who was b. in VA, and died and was buried in Brown Co., IN, in 1897, Wm. then married Nancy Moore. Several of his 6-7 (grown) children contested his will, in that he'd left some $$ and property to the second wife. (We have census info for 4 census, the earliest in Ohio, when they had 4 of the children with them, one having been born in Ohio. The rest were all born in IN.) Do you have a William? What do you know about him?
