    1. [BURNS] My BURNS family???
    2. John
    3. Ok, listers and cousins, after reading each and every listing to this site for the past couple of months I am ready to jump in and add more confusion to the family trails. There is a record of marriage in Nicholas County, Ky. for an Andrew BURNS and Hannah ADAMS on 20 September 1804. Does anyone have anything on this couple??? I have a distant cousin that speculates that this is the same Andrew BURNS that appears in Adams County, Ohio in time to get onto the 1820 Census for that county (Page 70). Can anyone add to this possibility with documentation?? This distanct cousion (again without documentation) suggest that this Andrew and Hannah were the parents of my James M. Burns that has been a brick wall for me for 35 years. James M. was born Dec. 1822; died Sept. 20, 1907, in Adams County, Ohio. He married Sarelda Adams, dau. of William Adams and Lucy Bailey. This William (again - speculation) is supposed to have been the brother of the above Hannah that married Andrew. Can anyone shed any light on this information?? Any help would be immensly appreciated. John V. Burns

    1. [BURNS] Samuel BURNS
    2. Marcia Coan
    3. Jerry--I don't know if this is just a repeat of what you may already know, but the 1820 census of Ohio lists several Samuel Burns' one of which may be father to your Samuel. They were in the following counties and townships: Jackson (Fra Twnshp--I only have abbreviations for these, so you would have to check county websites, also libraries are a great on line help). Butler (Lib Twnshp) Coshocton (Tus Twnshp) Cuyahoga (Cen Twnshp) and 2 in Richland (Mty Twnshp) one being Samuel and one Samuel, Jr. Also, Maryland Tax Records Index, 1798-1808, 1798, p.32, 1799-1800, p. 343; Assessment Book 1800, pp. 148, 290; 1804-1808, pp. 28,46 (Baltimore). There was also a Samuel in Lawrence County, Ohio, I think 1820 also (check on their website). And, a Charles F. Burnes and Barbara Hardy Burnes had the following children born, I believe, in Maryland--- Thomas 1807, Phildera b. 1793, Samuel abt. 1795, Tillman b. 1798, Alfred B. 1809, James b. 1820 and possibly others. e-mail [email protected] for information on this family, although this is an old (1999) address, I don't know if it's still valid. Paul and Shirley McDonald I also have a list of Ohio wills, which I'll look for tomorrow and let you know if there are any Samuels on it. Of course, that assumes Samuel's father was also Samuel but when your looking for the elusive BURNS family, anything is worth a try. I'll keep you posted if I find anything else. Marcia

    1. [BURNS] Burns Ohio, IL
    2. I am researching the family of Andrew Burns who was born c. 1811 in Ohio. He married Rebecca A. Moore in May 1843 in Adams Co. Ohio. Andrew was apparently married prior to his marriage to Rebecca as there is a son Robert A. Burns, age 9, in the 1850 census. Andrew and Rebecca had the following children: Henry, b. 1844 in Ohio Cyrus, b. 1847, in Ohio Aaron, b. 1850, in Ohio Andrew Murray, b. 1851, in Ohio Thomas, b. 1854, in Ohio Mary C., b. 1856 in Iowa (m. Richard Cheney 1878) Martha J., b. 1858 in IL Sarah E., b. 1860 in Ohio (m. Henry Hileman in 1877) Eveline, b. 1861 in Ohio (m. Hugh Henderson in 1876) John, b. 1862 in Ohio Charles Clement, b. 1865 in Ohio (m. Nellie Sholty in 1893) Rebecca Moore Burns died in April 1865 in Adams Co. OH. Andrew married Jane Moore Stuart in September 1865 in Highland Co. OH. By 1880 Andrew and Jane had moved to Cheneys Grove, McLean Co. IL. Jane Burns died in June 1888 in Saybrook, McLean Co. IL. Looking for further information on Andrew Burns' parents and his children. Jean Moore

    2. Marcia Coan
    3. It was great hearing from Mark and Jerry--sounds like we're all "stuck" in about the same time frame. I did want to mention to Mark that "my" John Burnes (Burns) b. 1807, Md., named his first child Robert C. Burns, so there is probably a very good chance that John and YOUR Robert were brothers. Do you know where Robert's children were born (in Ohio)? I have done a lot of looking in that state, can't believe how many Burns families were there in the first half of the l800's. I will have to look through all of my research this weekend to see if I can find out anything on Samuel. I haven't run across a lot of Samuel Burns' in Ohio. What did Isabella and Samuel name their children? They really kept names in the family back then. Of course, I'll keep you all posted about the BIble info. when I get it. Maybe if the lady who has it knew there were lots of us waiting for the information, she'd speed it up a little. Unfortunately, she lives in Ca. and I live in Ill. so I can't run over and offer to go with her to the bank vault! Later--and thanks for writing. Marcia

    1. [BURNS] George Burns
    2. Carol Wells
    3. Looking for family of George Burns of Edgefield, South Carolina, the earliest ancestor I have found. I guess he was born about 1730. Where? I think he was the George Burns who was granted 350 acres on 96 Creek, "on the bounty;" this land is now Edgefield, SC. I guess his wife was Elizabeth Heard. Is this right? I think George died about April 1771. George's known sons were George, Robert, William. I think John Burns of Edgefield was also a son. HOw were these Burns men related to Silas Burns of Edgefield? Carol.

    1. [BURNS] Robert Burnes (Burns) - Maryland 1807
    2. I have a possible brother to your John burns. Robert Burnes was born in Maryland around 1807. His wife, Sarah Matt was born about 1815 in New York. Their three older children were born in the state of Ohio. this family came to Warrick County Indiana, before 1844. They were listed in the 1850/1860 Census, but did not show up in Warrick or Pike County, Indiana in 1870. no grave makers found in Warick County cemeteries. Children: John Burns Ca 1833 in Ohio Isaac Burnes 1835 in Ohio Martha Burnes 1838 in Ohio Catherine Burnes 1844 in Indiana Sarah A. Burnes 1848 in Indiana Alonzo Burnes 1848 in Indiana Robert Leroy Burnes 1849 in Indiana Lorenzo Burnes 1853 in Indiana Arabella Burnes 1855 in Indiana (Early Families of Hart Township, Warrick Co., Ind. Vol 1 A-B. compiled by Phyllis Morris Jamison) After Robert died, Sarah Matt Burnes moved to Kansas with her only child not married. The child's name was Ira, (maybe Isaac). Here they lived in a small hut near an Indian village. After Ira died, Sarah moved in with her son John burns in Spurgeon Indiana. Does anybody have any connection to your John Burns? I would love to find out Robert Burnes parents' name. thanks, Mark M

    1. [BURNS] Maryland Burns
    2. Marcia Coan
    3. Deborah--we may very well have a connection, though not yet documented. I have a John Burns 2 (Burnes on his first marriage license) b. 1807, Hagerstown, Md, parents names yet unknown. I have no other information other than John's brother, William, b. 1814-1816 in Ohio. John married in Ashtabula County and John and William both went to Illinois in 1843 with other residents of Ashtabula County, so I assume their parents settled somewhere nearby. I have contact with a woman who is in possession of a family Bible, which may yield the name of John and WIlliam's parents. (I've been waiting for the info. since before Christmas--the Bible is in a bank vault and I may still be waiting at Easter.) I do know that John and William's father was born in Ireland, was probably Scotch-Irish and his mother was from Maryland. Because of the similarity in family first names, I wouldn't be surprised if your William was a brother to my missing g.g.g.grandfather. How did you find a marriage license for such an early date (1804)? Perhaps, I could look for a license for another BURNS in Maryland, around this same time. Hagerstown is in Washington Cty., could have been Frederick back then. Should I ever get the "mystery" info., I'll let you know. Marcia

    1. [BURNS] Re: Index to VT newspapers online
    2. For over a year I have been working on posting an index of names for the marriage and death notices printed in the Vermont Chronicle, an old newspaper that was published between 1826 and 1896. The notices cover towns state wide, and also cover other places, including, but not limited to: Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Canadian Provinces and beyond. The death notices are not full obituaries as we know them today, but sometimes contain other useful information besides the location, name and age of the person. The marriage notices usually just note the bride and groom, but sometimes names of parents. Currently I have the Indexes for 1826-1856 online, with more added as time permits. You can find the indexes at: http://www.middlebury.edu/~swilson/introvc.html Thanks for your interest, hope it can help you in your searches. Sylvia Wilson
