The earliest record we have of John Sr. is the June 18, 1766 land grant in Pittsylvania Co., Va of 400 acres between Long Branch of Sandy River and WIlliam Burns Branch, running along the course of both, and 400 acres on Ironmongers Branch of Horse Pasture Creek at order line up both sides. John enlisted for 9 months as a Sub, for Archibald Robertson in 1777 according to his widow who applied for pension on December 12, 1845. Note: John's daughter Sarah married John Leatherwood and the original property purchased by Sarah's Grandfather Charles (254 acres) was at the mouth of Leatherwood Creek, leads this researcher to believe there was a close connection of these families. John served in the same command as brothers William, Andrew, and Alexander and Samuel, under the command of Gen. "Christy" in his campaign against the (hostiles) Indians. After 1783 there is no record of John in Virginia. It is therefore assumed John was en route to (He may have been in North Carolina for a short span) South Carolina. John along with his brothers Samuel, Alexander,, were listed on the 1790 Greenville District Census in South Carolina . Brother William did not join them until after 1797. Brother Andrew was in Kentucky (by 1789). Little is known of his brother Charles Jr., who appears on the 1787 Henry Co. Virginia Tax List, and disappears thereafter. Now to the meat of the subject. John Burns Jr. born January 17, 1777 this date of birth is confirmed by his mothers pension application and is on file in the National Archives. He died in about 1847 in Mississippi, one year before his mother. John Jr. carried the Family Bible with him when he moved his family to Tennessee. He served in the Tennessee Militia. John's family had to search for him and the family bible in order to prove his mother's claim. (at the time of the pension application all they knew was he moved west) His sister Sarah and the family atty. (from Hendersonville, North Carolina) finally located John Jr. and retrieved the bible, with the dates of birth of John Sr.'s children. (again on file with the pension application). I have seen several notes on the internet (Burns list) giving John Jr. a middle initial, I have found none. John Jr. was born in Henry County, Virginia not South Carolina, although he was there with his father on SC Census of 1790. John died in Yalobusha County, Mississippi near Coffeeville. Some of John Jr.'s descendants migrated to Texas, there are 11 children attributed to John Jr. born between 1806 and 1829. My records show he married Mary Anne "Anna" Green about 1805 in North Carolina. Major (Retired) Delbert L. My grandfather John Edward Burns was born in Maryland circa 1859. His father's name was also John, but I don't know anything about him. My grandfather's mother died at his childbirth and his father gave him to a family called the "Rabbits". I will have to find the papers that shows the County, I just know that it was close to Washington DC. There may be a connection here and I would like to pursue it. His father would probably have a birth date somewhere around what your talking about. Do you know if your "John" had another son born around 1859 named John Edward? I have hit brick wall getting past my grandfather. I don't even know if he had any brothers or sisters. Maybe there is a connection with your family as they were also from Maryland??? Keep in touch. Hello everyone! This is my first posting to the list. I am trying to find the parents of Angellica J. Burns, b: abt 1824 MO, d: Jan 1867, Livingston Co., MO. Married Smith Campbell on 1 Jan 1842, in Franklin Co., MO. They had 7 children: Susan C., Howard M., John S., Alice (or Cordelia), James and Orvill. All children were born in Livingston Co., MO. Possible siblings to Angellica are: Susan C. (m Robt. Armstrong), Thomas (m Mary Jane Kincaid), and Margaret (m Patrick Shannon). These have not been verified. Angellica'a father was known as a "Captain of Ships", and was Irish. Her grandmother was said to have been a Native American. I would appreciate any help anyone could give me on this family. Thanks! Lorene Burns Noennig: You mention a John Burns and Isabella of Maury Co TN. What records put this John Burns in Maury Co? My gggg-grandfather John Burns and wife Isabella Nelson moved to Bedford Co, TN from Rockingham Co, NC in 1807. We have many land transactions of his in Bedford Co, including one to another family member 6 weeks before he died. He bought and sold a lot of property located in what is present day Bedford Co over the years. My John Burns died in 1837. There was another John Burns in Maury Co or Marshall Co who died in the early 1840s, but that was not my John Burns. Bill Burns
Me again I came in contact with someone on the net that seem to think John Sr from Baltimore County Maryland was the father of the John you are looking for and if so he is a relative and fits into my Burns line. John Sr was born about 1737 in St. Mary's Co Maryland and moved later to Baltimore County Maryland where some of his cousin's lived at the time. Just a little tid bit I remembered. Dallas
John I am sure was acquainted with my family because they lived in the same area of middle TN. but as far as I know he was not kin to my line. I have not been able to fit them into my family tree. There is a lot of information about him in the Bedford Co and Maury Co. Records. Dallas
I'm curious about your cousins in Baltimore Co. Our John, one of the three in Bedford Co., TN, was born in Baltimore Co. MD either in 1753 or 1747 (probably 1753?). He gave the two dates in various papers. We don't know who his parents or siblings are. I am trying to find where in Michigan my step-great grandfather and my great grandmother died. John BURNS married my great grandmother Ellen GARVEY MALONE 22 Feb 1909* in Cleveland, OH and then moved to Michigan and nobody ever heard from them again. *SOURCE Marriage Record Application No. 61133 dated Feb 20, 1909 State of Ohio, Cuyahoga County Return Certified that on the 22nd day of February 1909 James Burns and Ellen Malone were married by Rev. F. A. Malloy Vol 72 p. 34. John BURNS was born in Dublin, Ireland 15 Jan 1864* and died 1916 (although, I have nothing to prove the death date and frankly, do not know where it came from). We are assuming that he died in Michigan. According to the Marriage Record, John's parents were Thomas BURNS and Julia CHRISTIAN and John was a fireman. Also according to the marriage record, Ellen's parents were Michael GARVEY and Ellen DONAHUE. Ellen GARVEY (b. circa 1855) married my great grandfather, Michael MALONE probably around 1875 in Ireland. They emigrated to Aliquippa, PA and then moved to Cleveland, OH. Michael died at age 42 in Cleveland on 3 Mar 1890** and Ellen raised their seven children by herself. After the children were out of the house she married John BURNS and moved to Michigan with him. ** Source [email protected] Cuyahoga County Archives, No,. 1160 I am hoping that by finding John BBURNS, I will be able to get some information on Ellen GARVEY MALONE BURNS. We do not even know when she died or where she was living at the time of her death. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Maureen Hodgson [email protected]
