I'm gonna toss in my two-cent for what it's worth. I hope some folks agree... I read DAV, VFW, and American Legion Magazines every month. I am a member of each of these fine organizations. In them, there is plenty of patriotic discussion but very little genealogy. I watch CNN and FoxNews and my local news each day and they do a fairly good job of providing me with accurate current events information but not much genealogy. I subscribe to two different technology magazines which do a fine job of advising me of the present state of technology and I watch TechTV which does an amazing job of warning me of "real" issues in technology but not much about genealogy. I subscribe to very many Rootsweb lists in order to locate genealogical information. I don't look to VFW or CNN for genealogical information any more than I look to Rootsweb for the latest in world events. I absolutely don't look to rootsweb for the latest in technology (how many virus hoax messages have we each received from well meaning but ill-advised list members). Understanding too - that many readers of rootsweb lists ARE NOT IN THE USA! -- why would discussion of flying American flags be an appropriate discussion topic unless we are all so ethnocentric that we think the USA is the only nation on earth (or the only people worthy of subscribing to mailing lists). Or, unless we think that everyone reading genealogical mailing lists can't understand the idea that world events information is better received from journalists. Or, unless we have no regard for the time and interests of others (as is evidenced when the same off-topic message is cross-posted to many lists). IMHO - use the rootsweb lists for what they're intended, genealogical research. Wanna chat about flag flying? Subscribe to the VFW or Legion lists -- they talk about that all the time. Wanna complain about Rootsweb or Ancestry or Genealogy.com or USGenWeb or ..... make sure that you're whining about a "real" genealogical problem and not something no different than saying (for example) "those un-American police officers in my town won't let me drive my car inside the mall" or "those anti-American editors at _Ford Magazine_ won't include photos of my Pontiac!" Cars don't belong in the mall - Pontiacs aren't featured in Ford Magazine - World Events and patriotism are not surname specific topics. -- IMHO, complaining that you can't discuss completely unrelated topics on a genealogy mailing list is no different than those examples. CoachT (who remembers the "old days") enjoying my subscription to each of these services - it beats the heck out of travelling around the country to courthouses and libraries... And is much cheaper too! -----Original Message----- From: nls [mailto:naela@earthlink.net] Sent: Thursday, April 17, 2003 10:53 AM To: BURNS-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [BURNS] Roots Web & Ancestry.com I do hope that the List Admin. will respond to this. Hello List, Thought I'd try my luck in posting this message again! My great-great grandfather was Capt. George Burns McLellan born about 1811 in Nova Scotia died August 2, 1887 in Great Village, Colchester County, Nova Scotia; and he is buried at Mahon Cemetery in Great Village. He married Jane Megeney February 28, 1837 in Londonderry, Colchester County, Nova Scotia; and they had 10 children. I am searching for information as to where he was born and also the names of his parents and siblings. Any Burns related? Any help you may have would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again. Regards, Vivian Warren Keep Open Forever, The Road to Yesterday!

Thank you Geralyn and Susan for the tips for finding more info. I, unfortunately, am still at a brick wall. But I have some new avenues to look at. If you all think of any more tips please let me know. Thanks again. Judy
Roberta-- If you are on this list---you sent me an email about B.F. and Tarrence Burns, but when I try to answer it, I get a message saying you are not accepting mail from me. ???? Barbra
Hi Judy (and list), Since you asked for suggestions, here are a few that come to mind immediately... I thought I would post this to the list, since it might be useful to others too. First and foremost, did Barney or his widow receive a pension for his Civil War service? Pension records often have lots of interesting family information, especially if the widow applied for a pension - she had to prove death of soldier, her own marriage to soldier, and the marriage and death of any previous wives of soldier, plus births of any minor children. Soldier's (also called invalid) application often (not always) listed names and dates of birth of children. I have seen some applications with exact place of birth or marriage in Ireland mentioned - not my own family, of course! And I have seen a couple of service records (different from pension records) that stated place of origin in Ireland - but that is more unusual. However, YOU may be lucky. I did find "Barney BURNS" listed in the "Civil War Pension Index" online at ancestry.com. The images of the index cards are online there [for-pay site]. They are taken from a US government-generated index that actually includes military service from the time of the Civil War to just before WWI, including the Spanish American War. [Citation for source of images: National Archives and Records Administration. General Index to Pension Files, 1861-1934. T288, 544 rolls. Washington, D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration]. The pension index is often available on microfilm at libraries that have major genealogical collections. The index card says Barney BURNS, widow Mary I BURNS, service in Vaughan's Indpt Batty Ill L.A. [Independent Battery Illinois Light Artillery]. He filed in 1879 (for an invalid pension: application #292,562 and certificate #332,316), and she filed for a widow's pension on 31 May 1894 (application # 596,088 and certificate #416,325, filed from Illinois) - which fits with his death in May 1894. Application and certificate numbers are helpful in ordering the pension record from the National Archives. If you already have a pension record for him, is it the complete record - every page - or just the pages deemed to be "of genealogical interest" when you ordered the record from the National Archives? [It is good to have every page, just in case THEY missed something important.] Have you followed up on tracing the witnesses in the records? They were often relatives: even though the relationship to a witness was not usually stated in the pension record, further research often reveals the relationship. Same for baptismal sponsors of children, marriage witnesses and naturalization witnesses - all should be treated as potential relatives whose records may hold a clue. Perhaps records for other family members or associates of Barney mention a place in Ireland - that's often a good place to start your search for Barney's origins if his own records mention no more than just "Ireland". At least he has a fairly distinctive first name: Barney (or Barnard or Bernard) is much better than John! Have you checked ALL the records associated with his Civil War service and the service of his unit? Did you find an obit for Barney? Did he belong to a GAR post? If he did, have you looked for records associated with that? How about obits (or other new stories) in the local newspapers for him, for his children and widow or for other relatives? Did you get information from Calvary Cemetery about the burial of his first wife, or is that a family story? Does the grave have a stone on it? Is there anyone else in the grave? Have you traced all the people in the grave? I'm guessing they were Catholic (at least maybe Barney and his first wife). Have you found baptisms for any of the children - the ones born in NY and IL? Marriage records for Barney? Did you trace him in city directories and censuses in the NYC area? Do you know what brought him to Illinois? Were there other relatives there already? Have you located Barney and all his children (and any other relatives) in every possible census, including state censuses? Occasionally a census taker erred and wrote exact information, like city or county of origin in Ireland (of course, not for my family, but I've seen it many times for others - you could be the lucky one). I've seen county of origin (in Ireland) written in under the parents' information in the 1930 census in particular. At the very least, the 1930 census should state either "Northern Ireland" or "Irish Free State" for place of birth of the parents, since they were separate countries by then. Have you found all the children in 1930? These are just a few suggestions, but in my experience, the Civil War Pension records and gravestones are the 2 most likely places to find exact information about Irish origins, followed by obituary (or death notice or account of funeral in newspaper). But you never know where you might find that crucial bit of information you need. Also, the more information you have, the better you can decide if a new piece if information is correct. For both these reasons, it's important to track down every piece of paper you can that mentions any member of the family and their associates. Even if a newly found record is disappointing to you because it doesn't state place of origin in Ireland, don't give up! Examine it closely, and make sure you diligently follow up on ALL clues it holds. I hope my suggestions have been helpful to you... For years we had been looking for the Burns family without a lot of luck. We contacted the Roscommon Heritage Center and found out that the family was Beirne before they left Ireland and appearently Immigration people changed it to Burns.
