That is correct. The Burns Check was made as a commemorative to Robbie Burns (Burnes) and nothing to do with a Clan or history. I am trying to break down a huge brick wall. I am looking for Barney Burns born May 27 1825 in Ireland. Came to the U.S. thru New York about 1850. His first wife was Ann ? died in New York buried Calvary Cem. They had a son named Peter. Barney moved to Illinois and was in the Civil War. In 1866 he married Serena Mary Irene Jones. He died May 1894 in Springfield, IL she died Aug 1925 in Springfield. Their children were Richard b: 1867, William b: 1870, John F. b: 1872, George O. b:1874, Margaret "Maggie" b: 1879 and James A. b: 1880. The "family" has always said Barney's parents were Owen and Mary (poss. Barnett). They remained in Ireland. I have no idea were in Ireland they are from. Any help breaking this brick wall down welcomed. Judy

Chris If not too inconvenient, I too would like to sneak a peak at the Burns tartan! I love my Burns family from Ossian Indian, Michigan and New York. Karen Stotts Myatt a descendant of Elizabeth Burns and Johannes William Frederick Herbst, Emery BURNS and Mary Malinda Grimm William BURNS and Juliette Belote Blakely BURNS and Lucy Moon John BURNS and Ruth Willey ( Very uncertain if this last pedigree part is father or brother to Blakely Burns) I am told that my BURNS originally came from Lenarkshire, Scottland. I have never seen any documentation of this and cannot seem to stay in connection with the man who told me that so am still uncertain of it. Thank you all, Karen Stotts Myatt ----- Original Message ----- From: Chris Burns To: BURNS-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Saturday, June 21, 2003 6:57 PM Subject: [BURNS] Fw: Tartan If you want a picture of the Burns Tartan it looks like you will have to Email me direct. I am researching the Burns family however I am unable to find any of my family. Can anyone help with the Burns from Kansas or Oklahoma? Shannon Burns
There is a Burns family tartan and also a Burns check tartan which are not related to the Burns sept of Clan Campbell as I understand. This link might help find some -- http://www.house-of-tartan.scotland.net/house/tfinder.htm and search Burns. Some interesting reading on the Clan Campbell tartan can be found at http://www.clanfinder.com/foreverscotland/clan_information.asp?clanCode=016 a good amount of information about the poet Robert Burns can be found at http://www.scotsheritage.co.uk/poemsofburns/about_robert_burns.htm This page discusses the courtesy and privilege of wearing the tartan of Clan Campbell (which I do) http://ccsna.org/jsep50a.htm and you can find information about becoming a member of Clan Campbell at http://ccsna.org/newmember/ "Membership is open to all who are Campbells, Campbell Septs [includes BURNS], married to a Campbell or Campbell Sept, and, in keeping with Scottish traditions, those who want to be associated with the Clan Campbell [that would include anyone at all], the greatest family in all of Scotland." [my notes in brackets] Keep in mind too that there are geographic and occupational tartans as well. There is a United States tartan and there are "national pride" tartans. There are also Irish plaids... :-) "Just remember that tartan stands for something, and by wearing and displaying a tartan, you do honor to what it represents." Hi, I'm looking for more info on the parents of Agnes Burns born Dec 1834, Pollockshaw, Renfrew, Scotland. Her father was William Burns born about 1811. His father is thought to also be William Burns. Does anyone have any info on these people? Agnes married James Harvey. Thanks Becky
Akron Beacon Journal, June 7, 2003 Sarah Minnie Burns, 99, passed away in Tallmadge, Ohio on June 5, 2003. She was born in Bath Ohio, on Sept. 19, 1903, to Charles and Louise Lueck. Preceded in death by her husband, Delorma L. Burns, born in Morrow County Ohio, Great-grandson of Hezikiah Burns of Columbiana County, Ohio.
Hi All: I have a George Alexander Burns, Sr., Aug. 17, 1817 Pa. (allegedly in Chester County) he married Dec 23 1854, Mahaska County, Iowa to Adaline Florence Snider b: Jun 30 1839, Jay County, Indiana. They resided in Iowa, Missouri (possibly the Aurora, Lawrence County, Mo. area) then on to Cherokee County, Kansas before finally settling in Altamont, Labette County, Kansas, where George passed away on Apr 20 1896 and is buried in the Elston Cemetery. After George's death, Adaline moved to Laramie County, Wyoming, where several of their children resided, and homesteaded all by herself. George was allegedly the son of Eleazer Burns b: 1791 Pa. and Mary Stiver b: 1793, although I have never been able to find proof of this. Children of this couple were George Alexander, Jr., m: Mary Vermillion; Elizabeth m: William Kendall Baker; Alice m: Jonas Ryland Baker; Lucinda m: Charles or John Ropp; Mary m: Cyrus Wilkie Metcalf & Casper Mergenschrouer; Alfred m: Hattie Angeline Denison & Dora Thornbrew; Laura Adaline m: Hurbert A. Smith; Estacia Margaret m: Wesley McGill (Laura and Tacy were twins); Aaron m: Isabell Gaw; and Nora Adell m: Gallio Claudis Connelly. Does anything sound familiar to anyone? Allice Burns Reynolds
