    1. Re: [BURNS] Spartanburg, SC BURNS Reunion
    2. Greetings from Iowa! I ran across your post of 8/1 as I was sorting through the last couple of weeks of e-mail and wonder if there might be some connection between your Burns ancestors and mine. The ones I know the most about were/are in southeastern Kentucky but we have some information indicating they came to Kentucky from the Carolinas. Neither of the names you mention are familiar to me but there were some twins in my line. My great-great grandmother was Malinda "Lindy" Burns and her daughter Nancy Jane Burns (m. Hugh Ward) was my great grandmother. I would love to hear from you if you think there might be some common pieces in our family puzzles. I would be happy to share any information I have. As I am sure you have discovered, this is not the easiest name to trace. Pamela S. Brown

    2. Greetings from Iowa! I found your post of 8/1 as I was sorting through the last couple of weeks of e-mail and wondered if there might be a connection between your Burns ancestors and mine. I don't know of any of my line being in Texas but a couple of the names caught my eye. My great-great grandmother was Malinda Burns and I know she had one son whose name was William. Her daughter Nancy Jane was my great grandmother. Most of the family we know about were in southeatern Kentucky and we think they may have come to Kentucky from North/South Carolina. This is not the easiest name to trace so I would love to hear from you if you think there might be some connections between your Burns ancestors and mine. I would be happy to share any information I have. Good luck with your continued searching. Pamela S. Brown

    2. Greetings from Iowa! I sat down to go through my e-mail from the last week or two and say your post of 7/28. Like you, I noticed some of the same given names that show up in my Burns family puzzle and, since this is not the easiest family to trace, I check every clue I think might possibly find some of my missing ancestors. Most of my Burns relatives are in southeastern Kentucky but we also have information that leads us to believe they were in North Carolina first. I would love to hear from you if you think there might possibly be a connection somewhere. Good luck with your continued searching. Pamela S. Brown

Thanks, and good luck with your continued searching. Pamela S. Brown

    1. Burns bros. Benjamin, Mijamin, William A. and Cornelius SC to GA 1800's
    2. Sue Moore
    3. My William A. Burns, born in SC, in 1812, had a brother Benjamin C. Burns, born ca 1803-1806 in SC, who married Nancy Phillips in Morgan Co. in 1822. There was a sister Jane, born ca 1805 in SC, who married Andrew Giles in Morgan Co. in 1824. The reason that I say these were brothers and sisters is that they and their families all went to Hempstead Co. AR, same community, some before and after the Civil War. Their children and grandchildren have many of the same names. Another brother of William A. Burns was Mijamin S. Burns - both were blacksmiths by trade, in addition to their being from SC and in Campbell/Carroll Co. GA )where brother Benjamin went after being in Morgan Co.) at the same time. In addition, Mijamin witnessed several deed from the period of 1829 to 1851 for their brother Benjamin C. Burns. Mijamin's widow and family also went to Hempstead AR. Now for the newly found one, Cornelius - I had a Leonard Burns whom I couldn't account for who suddenly "appeared" among the families of the Burns brothers already in Arkansas. I knew he had to be kin - but how? When he died, his widow Savannah E. Shaw Burns married a Burns cousin, grandson of Benjamin C., who lived next door. I finally traced Leonard back to GA and found his father to be Cornelius Burns. His tombstone records that Cornelius was born in York South Carolina in 1811. Cornelius was in Carroll Co. GA, as was my William, in 1840. Cornelius stayed in that general area from then on - Cass and Gordon - while the others moved on to Hempstead AR after the war. With the coming of his son Leonard to the family in AR, I think that fairly wells proves the case and gives us the location in SC to search. Cornelius had a son Malachi, and that is a name in my line also. There was a Henry Burns who died in Morgan Co. ca 1815-1818 who left a widow Ruth and orphans including one named Leonard - evidently a family name. Henry came from York Co SC, also. How he is connected, I am not sure, but think that he is somehow kin. So, all this is just waiting to be proved. Any help with these Burnses will be appreciated. Sue M.

    1. John Burns
    2. I am seeking information on Col. Andrew D. Burns born 1850 in Wayne County, NY. Col. Burns lived in Rochester, NY. also for a short time and then moved onto Bradford, Pa. in the County of McKean. My Great-Great grandfather, Sylvester Burns lived with Andrew for a short period of time around 1880-85 in Bradford. Sylvester was born in Crawford County, Pa. in 1850 and had lived a short time in Duke Centre, Pa., a small town about 20 East of Bradford in the same County. Andrew Burns had a sister Mary Littel and a brother Michael who I believe may have went by Ike. All lived together in Bradford according to the 1880 Census. Michael I believe moved to Port Allegany, another small town South-East of Bradford. Thank You, John Burns

    2. Still trying to locate Thomas Alvin Burns who would be about 65 yrs. old now if still living. The family lived in a mobile home park in Albany, GA back in the middle 50's. Tommy had a twin brother whom I think was named Theodore (Ted). They both went into USN in 1957. The family was originally from the Carolinas I believe. John Battle Guyton, GA

    1. BURNS Family Photograph
    2. Shelley Cardiel
    3. I've "rescued" an old photograph of Rowena BURNS which was taken at the Imperial Studio in San Francisco, California. The photograph was probably taken in the late 1890's or early 1900's with Rowena appearing to be in her late teens or early 20's at the time. Based on limited research I believe that this is a photograph of Rowena A. BURNS b. 19 Dec 1879 is the daughter of Col. Daniel M. BURNS who was Secretary of State in California when the 1880 census was completed. During the 1880 census the family was living in Sacramento, CA with two daughters and a cousin recorded living in the household. Daniel M. BURNS age 35, born in MO to parents who where both born in MO. Daniel's wife Amelia BURNS age 30, born in WI to parents who were both born in WI. Their two daughters, Emma BURNS age 19, born in CA to parents born in CA and WI, this suggests either an error in recording or different parents since Amelia is only 30 it isn't likely that Emma is her child unless Emma's age is incorrectly recorded, and that leaves an issue with father's place of birth being different as well. The second daughter Rowena A. BURNS is age 6 months, born in CA and lists parents born in CA and WI respectively. Again, an issue with father's place of birth, but with two daughters so far apart in age I'm thinking that Amelia might not be Emma's mother. The cousin recorded as living in the household is Albert SCHINDLER age 20, born in CA to Swiss born parents. With further help from a BURNS Family researcher I find that Rowena A. BURNS married Charles DUNPHY in about 1902 and was living at 3638 Washington Street in San Francisco at least from 1910 through 1930. The couple appears to have had two daughters, Dana b. 1911/12 in San Francisco, CA and Rowena b. 1913/14 in San Francisco, CA. Charles DUNPHY was an Executive with a California Mining Company. Rowena A. BURNS DUNPHY died on the 19th of April 1967 in San Francisco, CA with her Mother's parents recorded at that time as Ameila SCHINDLE BURNS and Daniel M. BURNS. Additional census records reviewed note that Daniel & Amelia BURNS only had one child so there is still the mystery of who Emma BURNS might be who was living with the family in 1880. I'm hoping to locate someone from this BURNS Family so that the photograph can be returned to its rightful place with family. If you are a member of this family or know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley
