    3. Craig: It had not occurred to me that your Burnses "originated" in Orange County, NC. It's interesting that so many Burns lines seem to have gathered up in that section of the country. There was a John Burns born 1754 in Baltimore County, MD who was in Rockingham County, NC and who died in Bedford County, TN where my GGGF lived. My GGF was also named John Burns and this caused me some static but there apparently was no connection. This old John was a Rev. War vet and my GGF fought in the War of 1812 at New Orleans. Then there was another big Burns clan right over the line from Orange and Rockingham Counties, NC in Henry County, VA. Charles Burns died there in 1789 and left six sons and a couple of daughters. I really investigated that family pretty thoroughly and have a lot of stuff on him but have been also told by at least one of his descendants that I have no connection to him. I still find your information about your Burnses going into GA interesting. The wife of my GGF John Burns was Margaret Wilson(I guess I told you this before) and she was born in Lincoln County County, GA. Lorene and I are working on the idea that maybe that's where John ran into the Wilsons and came to middle TN with them. I have wondered for ages about who he came there with and exactly where he came from. He may have been born in NC and then went to GA later(like your family)and then on to middle TN. But who knows? I seem to have lots of information on everybody's Burnses except my own. 3. To fellow BURNS listers: I don't know why some people can see the image and others cannot. (It works fine from here). However, here's just the text of the document dated 1603: If anyone CAN see the original image - it is in old type, on a parchment scroll, please let me know. It's at http://www3.sympatico.ca/ag.lewis/proclam.htm Here's the text: ---------------------- The Lord Deputy and Council Recommending: That in the matter of the division of Counties they renew their former motion that the country of the O'BYRNES and O'TOOLES and other mountain parts adjoining, being spacious and yet Barbarous, wanting means of justice, and wherefor, in a perpetual state of rebellion, hitherto may be reduced into a County for the better government thereof. 1. [BURNS-L] John Burns
    2. I have a John Arthur Burns b. abt 1751 prob. in the area that became Pittsylvania/Henry Counties, VA d. 1/29/1805 Haywood County, NC. Unfortunately, I don't have any of his children but I do know that at least 1 of his brothers (my direct ancestor - Alexander Burns I) went to Rhea County, TN, abt. 1819. (There were several other bros., as well -- will be happy to give what details I have if anyone interested.) I know this doesn't help Lorene much but could be a connection and maybe someone out there can make it or otherwise shed some light. 3. The eastern coast of Ireland was known as "O'BYRNE's Country" in Shakespeare's time. Many of us are descended from the O'Byrne Clan. Here's where you can see a copy of the original proclamation, dated 1603, establishing Wicklow as a County in Ireland to control the "wild and barbarous O'Byrne clan". http://www3.sympatico.ca/ag.lewis/proclam.htm ... 3. In the intersts of helping out a fellow Irish researcher, I looked at the index to Griffiths Valuation. Although this was conducted long after your subjects had left Ireland, it is a valuable tool for locating where families were grouped--if the name was not common. Burns of course was, but Mc Nenamey was rare. At the time of Griffiths there were no listings anywhere in Ireland for the spelling McNenamey, but there were listings for McNenamy, McNemany, and McNemamny. All seven listings for McNemamny were for Co. Sligo, while the others were scattered around Antrim (1), Armagh (2), Donegal (2), Dublin (2), Londonderry (5), and Tyrone (6).
