    1. Re: [BURNS-L] William Burns ???
    2. John and Sue Burns
    3. Ellen, Sorry to have taken so long to reply. My John was born in 1780, which would sugest that his father, (Maybe William?) would have been born around 1757 or prior to that, I am uncertain if John had any brothers or sisters, or if so , they were older or younger. If they were older, his father would have to have been born earlier than 1757. There was about seven men named John Burns in Bucks county Pa in 1800. A cousin of mine was there and went through everything she could find and was unable to determine which one was ours. Schuylkill is a seperate county from Bucks county. It is to the west of Bucks county. My John however had a son born in New Philadelphia, Schuylkill county in 1826, Edward Thompson Burns. I have traced him out and have all but a place of death and burial. I even have a date of death but just can't find out where. If we have a connection here it is going to take some digging to find it I think. As for the Burns that moved to N.Y. State, they were in Ontario county, and I have only the name of the father, and two sons. The father and one son died there and another in Michigan. The only connection to the Buffalo area thet I have ever found was Edward Thompson had a daughter who was living there in the 1880's, probably going to school, and she ended up in Ohio. ---------- >From: "Ellen Hooven" <[email protected]> >To: [email protected] >Subject: Re: [BURNS-L] William Burns ??? >Date: Sun, Jul 9, 2000, 3:54 PM > > Hello to you John Burns, > I do not know if we have communicared before BUT; I have a very poor copy > of a will of someone who I believe to be my great great grandfather. 3. One more thing John, If you send me names and dates of the Burns guys who moved to NY. I will look in the City directories the next time I go up to the LDS library. They may have moved to Buffalo. After all we are well known for our Buffalo Winter's they may have been doing penance for something. 3. Hello to you John Burns, I do not know if we have communicared before BUT; I have a very poor copy of a will of someone who I believe to be my great great grandfather. His name was Patrick Burns. He immigrated from Belfast Ireland sometime in the early 1800s. I have immigration papers from Pottsville, Skuylkill Co that say he was age 25 in the year 1848 ( but I have no clue how long this man was there before he took out those papers) In that will he names a son Michael( that is the name of my great gandfather) he also names a daughter Mary Ann, a wife Ann AND a nephew John. Further I have a copy of the marriage papers of Michael Burns and Ellen Connelly, my great grandparents. They came from The Civil war rchives( Michaels pension papers) The folks who witnessed the marriage of Ellen &Michael were Mary Carroll and WILLIAM Burns soooooo! I have always wondered if William was the father of John, and if William were the brother of Patrick. Last week I sent "group sheets", copies of the marriage cert. ,Civil war records and a check to a professional genealogist in Pa. She is going to see whatever she can find about Michael, maybe I can learn more about the family. She said she expected that I would get info in about 6 weeks. I think what is now Schuylkill used to be Bucks Co. Do you have any knowledge of that? We live in Buffalo NY and I am fairly new to the computer so I am not too good at this. Any ideas I have all kinds of records on the children of Michael and Ellen. I will gladly share whatever I have or get with you if our folks turn out to be a match. I hope to hear from you. 2. Lorene & C.J.: My great, great uncle told me a number of old stories before he died. One of them was that he had heard rumors of legends in the Burns Family that my 4th great grandfather John Burns had a brother named Jesse and even a brother named James (I have no documentatio for such a legend). Therefore, I read your comments with some interest, Lorene. John Burns was said to have emigrated from "somewhere out east" (Penn., Tenn., Vir?) to Louisiana with his wife, Sarah McWilliams (b. in Ireland in 1780). They married somewhere around 1800, so the time frame seems to match up with the family that you mention, Lorene. John Burns was supposedly murdered and his widow married a man named Gabriel Beasley. I have found mention that John's son, Willoughby, was sent to Tennessee for some schooling (he was Presbyterian, I believe), so they may have had family ties up there. It's all very mysterious. I have found out one thing: the Burns' seemed to be terribly closed-mouth about their ancestry. The book that you mention sounds very interesting to me. I would love to know when it comes out. Otherwise, if I've said anything that sounds familiar, please let me know. Basil David Burns

    3. Lorene, Ooh.......I don't know. I can see some possibilities but nothing in what I have at this point pinpoints anything. Let me tell you what my situation is....I am just learning about the Burns family that I connect to when they were in KY and VA. There was a David Burns of Virginia that had 12 sons and one daughter!! Those sons branched out and went everywhere! There is a book coming out that will be over 700 pages long about this family - I don't know whether they have information on all of the sons. Their names were Samuel, David, Robert, Thomas, William, James, Isaac, Peter, Richard, Jeremiah, John, Jesse and I don't know the daughter's name. I descend from Jeremiah who went to KY from VA. There was one of Jeremiah's sons that went to central Tennessee and spread out from there. A little bit closer - in Missouri - my ggg grandfather was Benjamin Burns who originally settled in Clay County - he was there for the 1830 census, but in Missouri before 1821 - over towards Howard County. We only have one documented -for sure- son and that was Isaac. We believe he had sons Jeremiah M. Burns and Benjamin (Jr.) but could have had other sons that we have no knowledge of!! Benjamin married in 1800. I also know that some of his 1/2 brothers came to Missouri to the same area he was in, but who knows others - or their children - could have gone to other places in Missouri. On thing is for SURE! That is, that the Burns were very elusive and DIFFICULT to trace!! At least this line has been. I lucked out after years of frustration in finding the key that opened the door for me.....didn't think it was ever going to happen, and then it did! When I get a copy of this book I will have more information and just maybe?? One never knows! CJ [email protected] wrote: > CJ > > My gggGrandfather settled in Southwest Mo. in 1837. 2. Hello Dellene, Your James and Joseph Burns that went to CA in 1853. Do you know when they were born? I am curious. My gggGrandfather John Burns (born Nov. 4, 1788), had a son born 1828 and a bro James that went to CA around 1850. There was another son that went with them Thomas Lafayette Zachuees Burns, my gggUncle. James was killed on the way to CA by Indians and I have never heard another reference to Joseph M. They may not be connected, but at this time and place I will check out anything that might be a clue. Lorene Burns, Noennig [email protected]
