    1. Re: [BURNS-L]Charles Burns...
    2. Hello, Did any of your Burns go to TN? I have a John Burns born Nov 4, 1788 that came to TN as a young lad according to his War of 1812 pension file. I just came back from TN where they informed me a young lad at that time was between 15 to 20 years old. If this is so, he could have came by himself or with other families. Does this John Burns fit in your line? Thank you, Lorene Noennig email [email protected]

    3. Hi Jackie & listers, No....I'm afraid that the lines don't match up, but your names are certainly interesting! Actually, the earliest known BURNS for my crew was Thomas Burns in Scotland, and he m. Margaret LESLIE c. 1700. Their son, John Burns, b. in Scotland, removed to the north of Ireland, came to America in 1736 from Londonderry with his family, settled in what is now Milford, NH, USA. His family was a member of the Campbell clan. I have always been curious about his relationship to others with the name Burns and would appreciate any info. ---------------------------------------------------------- Hi Paul and list, Interesting about the name BURNESS. The Britannica tells us that Sir Alexander BURNES of Scotland, explorer and diplomat, (1805-1841) is of the "same family as the poet Robert Burns." In Alexander's case, only the extra "S" is missing at the end of the name - but that is probably another spelling variation. Also, I'm looking for the descendants of BEN EMERY BURNS of the Boston and Nashua, NH region, brother of my grt grandfather. Ben Emery had a son, Arthur Burns, and a dau. Ruth Herrick Burns.

    3. Hi Yvonne and C J, I have heard the same thing from my grandmother. In our genealogy there are many people with the middle name of Burns, My fathers name was Robert after the poet, my name is Roberta after the poet, I have in my possession a book, "The complete Works Of Burns' including his letters. copyright 1834, It has been handed down from geneation to generation in our family and was supposed to have belonged to Jean Armour Burns, his wife. My geat grand mother was Sarah Eliza H. Burns, born around 1800, we are not sure what the H in her name stands for, Some say Hyslip. but cant prove it. She lived and married in Franklin County Georgia. She may have been born there also, no record of it. My grand mother could not tell me how we were related, just that we were. I have been searching but have run up against a dead end so far. I just wanted to tell my story, I know there are others out there beside's us with similar stories. I've just found 4 siblings in the LDS site. My father and uncle never told me of these aunts and uncles of theirs, but had always said there was some link to the Poet. I haven't found any yet but am cross-referencing as much as I can with what I have so far. Does anyone have a David, William John (1856), Margaret (1858). 3. Other derivations of the name Burns include the Muinter Birn of Ulster, the O'Conboirne of Erris, and of course the Leinster O'Byrne clan. Also, in Sligo many people named Bourne or Bournes changed spelling to Burns. And we musn't forget the many Scot-Irish Burns who, like the poet, were originally named Burness. > [Original Message] > From: Francine G. 3. Has any other Irish-American researching the BURNS surname discovered that the name was originally BERN or BEIRN or BEIRNE or O'BEIRNE in the early 1800s back in Ireland? These spelling variations of the same surname were apparently very common back in the Emerald Isle, when so few people could read and write, and almost no one could spell. It certainly raises havoc with genealogists; at least it did with this one. Fran Weeks
