Hello Is anyone else descended from Hellen BURNS of East Lothian who married Peter Harkes? I do not have dates, but it must have been around 1800.Any information on this family very gratefully received. Doreen
For over a year I have been working on posting an index of names for the marriage and death notices printed in the Vermont Chronicle, an old newspaper that was published between 1826 and 1896. The notices cover towns state wide, and also cover other places, including, but not limited to: Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Canadian Provinces and beyond. The death notices are not full obituaries as we know them today, but sometimes contain other useful information besides the location, name and age of the person. The marriage notices usually just note the bride and groom, but sometimes names of parents. Currently I have the Indexes for 1826-1850 online, with more added as time permits. You can find the indexes at: http://www.middlebury.edu/~swilson/introvc.html Thanks for your interest, hope it can help you in your searches. Sylvia Wilson
In reply to Judy Cox' HELP, have you tried the 1900 Missouri census (microfilm can usually be "rented" at the local library and they probably have a machine. Or try the LDS library or a Genealogical Society near you.) By 1900, most census reports listed the birthdate, place of birth and parents place of birth for everyone listed on the census. I don't know about Missouri but I'm sure someone in one of the above facilities could help you. Be sure to order only the county that Taneyville is located in. Cost is usually less than $5.00 per roll. Also, you could check the county and see when they began to keep death records. Some courthouses have big, old handwritten ledgers that list the pertinent information and certificate numbers. I'd try to obtain a copy of Louisa or John Eugene's death certificate, if it's available. You may want to contact a researcher who will go to the courthouse and look things up for you. Again, you would have to contact the local library or Genealogical Society in or near Taneyville. There is usually a lot of information on a death certificate. Hope these ideas help. I think you will have good results. Marcia Illinois
Aloha from Hawaii This is my first posting. I have an autobiography in book form written by my g g grandmother Eliza Victoria Boardman Burnz, "The Mother of the Young Woman Shorthander". She was born in Rayne, Essex, England on 31 Oct 1823. She left home in Aug 1837 and, via Philadelphia, arrived in Pulaski, Tennessee two months later. She attended and then taught school and in Dec 1844 married Allan Jones of Hardeman Co., TN. They had a daughter, Fannie, on 5 Nov 1845 and Allan died on 7 Dec 1845. She expressed an interest in the invention of Phonography or phonic shorthand and began teaching phonic spelling to her students. In Jan 1847 she married Rev. John B. BURNS at Bolivar, TN. They moved to Cincinnati, OH in Jan 1848 where Mr. Burns studied medicine and learned daguerreotyping. After the (civil) war he was one of the first to reproduce pictures by the actinic or gelatine process. Shortly after the spring of 1850 a daughter, Fonetta, was born. In 1853 Mr. Burns received his M.D. and they moved to Camden, MS. While there two sons were born; Ellis in Sep 1853 and Channing on 15 May 1855. Soon after they moved to Sumter Co., AL then back to western Tennessee in 1860. During the war Dr. Burns served as Surgeon with the 3rd Kentucky Union Volunteers. He mustered out at Louisville, KY and when the hospital he worked at closed they returned to Cincinnati where Dr. Burns gave up the practice of medicine and worked full time at picture producing. Mrs. Burns went to Nashville, TN to teach and while there, in 1867, lost her son, Ellis, to dysentery just before the cholera epidemic. She returned to Cincinnati in 1868. In Jan 1869 Dr. Burns moved to New York, NY and she followed that June. He worked in photography and she in teaching phonography and stenography to women as well as men. In Jan 1875 Dr. Burns died and in 1876 she and her son, Channing changed the "s" to "z" in their names and formed a partnership for publishing named "Burnz & Co." She continued to teach and to pioneer spelling reform. On 5 Mar 1896 she was taken ill with vertigo. Twelve days later, while attempting to walk, she fell on her left side suffering an impacted fracture of the head of the femur. Unable to continue on her own she moved, in May 1897, to Dr. Robert Walter's institution at Walter's Park, PA. She remained there until she died of neuralgia on 19 Jun 1903. She was cremated and a service was held at Fresh Pond, Long Island, NY. Channing appears to have stayed with her until she died. Fonetta had married a HOUSE and was living in Texas at the time. I have no knowledge of whatever became of Fannie Smith or if she changed her name to Burns when her mother remarried. I descend from Channing Burnz through his son Rev. Edgar Channing Burnz and his son, my father, Robert Hadden Burnz who was born in New York, NY in 1919 and who now lives in Hawaii as do all his children, grandchildren and his great grandson. I'll post more on Channing's line later. Robert J. Burnz
Hi, I'm new to this list & hope I'm posting in the correct manner. I am looking for any information I can find on my Burns family line. I've only just begun my research but keep hitting deadends & am hoping some of you may be able to help me. My name is Judy Cox(Shifflett) . My grandmother was Martha Jane Burns ,born 3-4-1900 in Taneyville Missouri. Her parents were Louisa Hamons & John Eugene Burns. There were other children but I have no information on them. Martha's parents died & she was raised by the Snow family, probably either Jim or Mattie. Martha married James Harvey Shifflett in 1924. They lived in Oklahoma some but settled in Abilene Texas where she died in 1987. As I stated earlier any information you might have be be greatly appreciated. Judy Cox

My gggrandfather from came fromCounty Armagh, Parish Forkhill. About 1826 he married Margaret Byrne(s)and about 1840 they emigrated to Westport, Ontario, Canada, with six children-Ellen,(Nellie),Mary, John Owen (my ggrandfather), Patrick, Arthur, & James. They subsequently had Thomas, Elizabeth, & John. About 1873 they moved to Wisconsin leaving several children behind in Canada. John Owen married Margaret Byrne(s) yes, not a mistake. A Jane Byrne signed their marriage certificate. It took place in St Edwards Catholic Church 1852. Margaret is listed as the daughter of Brian Byrnes and Bridget Trainnor of County Louth, Parish Dundalk. John is listed as son of Patrick Donnelly and Margaret Byrnes of County Armagh, Parish Forkhill. Don't know if this ties in with your line?? Hello list, I have posted this info here several times before with no luck but maybe somebody new is here that can help so here we go. I am looking for information on Wilson Burns, my g-g-g-grandfather. Wilson moved to Crawford County, Pa. in 1828 with his parents John and Elizabeth Burns. His brothers were William D. , Redding Beatty, John, and Edward Thompson Burns. I have dates of birth, marriage, and death for all of the brothers but not for Wilson. I am missing his date of death. Wilson was born in 1820, married in 1842, a Miss Mary Ann Pike. There children were John, Redding, Angeline, Sylvester, Levina, Myron, Mary, Onvolina, and Amasa. I was able to trace the family through census data from 1850 to 1870. I have been unable to find them in the 1880 census. Wilson's son Redding spent his life in Crawford county and is buried there. Sylvester, who is my g-g-grandfather moved to McKean County, Pa. around 1875-76 and spent the rest of his life there. I would love to hear from anyone who is decended from any of the other children. I am uncertain if they left the state, or maybe they were over come by some epidemic in the 1870's, Wilosn may have died and his wife may hace remarried. I just don't know. The only thing I am sure of is that Wilson was deceased by 1888 when his brother Redding died in 1888. The only surving brothers were John and Edward Thompson Burns at that date. Thank You for your time! John Burns

Hi Listers, having seen the recent mailstorm of U.S. based BURNS', I thought I would have a go at reposting my English connection and see if there are any searchers on the list looking for UK based BURNS!! My earliest is David BURNS' born ca 1800. His son, Bartholomew (a labourer), was born ca 1819 and married Margaret COLLINS (born ca 1818) in 1839, Bermondsey, Surrey. They had a son William, born 1841 also in Bermondsey. William married Ellen Ryan, and they had 4 girls...Ellen, Elizabeth, Catherine and Mary A. The children were born in Rotherhithe, Kent and Bermondsey. Does this ring bells with anyone? Regards, Nigel. Researching: ADLER - West Surrey 1700-1825. ANSET - Lon/Midx 1800-1850.
