Hi, I am having some difficulties with this family. I found in vital records the record of marriage fro Frank S. Burns & Mary E Lundrigan (m.19 Oct 1900) Parents of Frank are recorded as John F & Annie Riley both born Ireland. Franks death record again states John Burns and Annie Riley as parents...both born Ireland. I figured they lived at least till 1900 so checked for their death records....I found a John F. Burns (am told that Frank had a sister only) It lists parents as John F Burns and Annie Riley, John b. Ireland, Annie b. Providence Rhode Island. Are there any Burns out there that could straighten this out? It stated that John F Burns was married but didnt state the wifes name. I hope he had children.... Please let me know if you can connect to this family, thank you kindly Pam

Sorry, Marilyn, no connection to my Illinois Burns. There sure were a lot of them, weren't there!?? As far as Illinois Burns goes , there are a bunch in Kankakee , Illinois , descendants of Thomas Burns of Castleblayney , Co . Monaghan , Ireland who arrivedin 1873 or 1880 with wife Catherine Mc Donnell and five childrenn in Kankakee , of which Andrew , Frank , James , Michael and Mary , or Bridget as she was also called , all young children . Catherine died soon after and the father had to put his children in an orphanage for a time until he could earn enough to keep them with him . All grew to work their way through studies . James became a commander of an Illinois 6th regiment , I believe in world war I later becoming a judge and in the last ten years of his life he was a democratic representative in state congress , Andrew was a priest who became a high prelate in the church , later becoming a prince of the church , a monsignor . Frank was lawyer in Kankakee all his life , Michael left the family to find his fortune and died early , Mary never married and kept her brogue all her life . My line descends from James Burns , the statesman . I know that Frank went back to Castleblayney twice to visit family , but the family in usa has lost track of the address of the family in ireland and would like to recontact them .We know there were cousins of the Burns's in the Boston area , and they were lawyers . The offspring of Rep. James T. Burns, 10 children , all worked their way through studies and became doctors , dentists , engineers , lawyers and judges , social workers and teachers , their children (my generation ) now have children in elementary school . ---------- >Da: Marilyn Underwood <[email protected]> >A: [email protected] >Oggetto: Re: [BURNS] BURNS >Data: Dom, 28 gen 2001 0:17 > > Marcia: > Were you directing this to anyone in particular or just anyone with Burns > in Ill.???? > > Marilyn - Fla. > > Marcia Coan wrote: > >> Could you e-mail me your Illinois BURNS connection, location and names of > ancestors. >> Thanks >> Marcia >> >> ============================== >> The easiest way to stay in touch with your family and friends! >> http://www.myfamily.com/banner.asp?ID=RWLIST1 > > > ============================== > Add as many as 10 Good Years To Your Life > If you know how to reduce these risks. > http://www.thirdage.com/health/wecare/hearthealth/index.html >
Marcia: No problem - didn't want to butt in if it was directed to someone in particular. My John Burns came from Ireland around 1832-35 and by 1854 had settled in Atlanta, Logan Co., Ill. He was m. to Mary Ann Kelly and both were b. 1820. She was from Shannon, Ireland but don't know where in Ireland he was from. Marilyn - Fla. I apologize for the confusion--the BURNS-L e-mail address was listed under one of the Burns Surname Registry entries at Ancestry.com. I didn't even notice the address when I sent the mail, as it was listed as a person's name on the registry. I will have to check who it was or why it went to the list. Again, I apologize for the confusion (mine and everyone elses.) My BURNS connection is from Kane County, Illinois (Hampshire) where John B. Burns II settled, in 1843, with his wife Elizabeth (Weed) Burns. They came to Illinois from Ashtabula County, Ohio. They had 14 children, many of whom remained in the Kane County area. Would love to connect with any descendants. I have an autobiography in book form written by my g g grandmother Eliza Victoria Boardman Burnz, "The Mother of the Young Woman Shorthander". She was born in Rayne, Essex, England on 31 Oct 1823. She left home in Aug 1837 and, via Philadelphia, arrived in Pulaski, Tennessee two months later. She attended and then taught school and in Dec 1844 married Allan Jones of Hardeman Co., TN. They had a daughter, Fannie, on 5 Nov 1845 and Allan died on 7 Dec 1845. She expressed an interest in the invention of Phonography or phonic shorthand and began teaching phonic spelling to her students. In Jan 1847 she married Rev. John B. BURNS at Bolivar, TN. They moved to Cincinnati, OH in Jan 1848 where Mr. Burns studied medicine and learned daguerreotyping. After the (civil) war he was one of the first to reproduce pictures by the actinic or gelatine process. Shortly after the spring of 1850 a daughter, Fonetta, was born. In 1853 Mr. Burns received his M.D. and they moved to Camden, MS. While there two sons were born; Ellis in Sep 1853 and Channing on 15 May 1855. Soon after they moved to Sumter Co., AL then back to western Tennessee in 1860. During the war Dr. Burns served as Surgeon with the 3rd Kentucky Union Volunteers. He mustered out at Louisville, KY and when the hospital he worked at closed they returned to Cincinnati where Dr. Burns gave up the practice of medicine and worked full time at picture producing. Mrs. Burns went to Nashville, TN to teach and while there, in 1867, lost her son, Ellis, to dysentery just before the cholera epidemic. She returned to Cincinnati in 1868. In Jan 1869 Dr. Burns moved to New York, NY and she followed that June. He worked in photography and she in teaching phonography and stenography to women as well as men. In Jan 1875 Dr. Burns died and in 1876 she and her son, Channing changed the "s" to "z" in their names and formed a partnership for publishing named "Burnz & Co." She continued to teach and to pioneer spelling reform. On 5 Mar 1896 she was taken ill with vertigo. Twelve days later, while attempting to walk, she fell on her left side suffering an impacted fracture of the head of the femur. Unable to continue on her own she moved, in May 1897, to Dr. Robert Walter's institution at Walter's Park, PA. She remained there until she died of neuralgia on 19 Jun 1903. She was cremated and a service was held at Fresh Pond, Long Island, NY. Channing appears to have stayed with her until she died. Fonetta had married a HOUSE and was living in Texas at the time. I have no knowledge of whatever became of Fannie Smith or if she changed her name to Burns when her mother remarried. I descend from Channing Burnz through his son Rev. Edgar Channing Burnz and his son, my father, Robert Hadden Burnz who was born in New York, NY in 1919 and who now lives in Hawaii as do all his children, grandchildren and his great grandson. I'll post more on Channing's line later. Robert J. Burnz ============================== Create a FREE family website at MyFamily.com! http://www.myfamily.com/banner.asp?ID=RWLIST2

Pam, We were close but ....as they say...no cigar. My John W. (Probably William as it's been handed down through the generations...I'm William Allen) was born County Cork in 1866, Father Henry born 1815...Father Samuel born 1795. I thought when I saw the name Annie Riley it sounded familiar but I can't cross it. Sorry, You had me going there for a minute. Good Luck. Allen
