Visitation: Wednesday Jun. 9, 2004 Memorial Service: Wednesday Jun. 9, 2004 Funeral Home: Porter Loring Mortuary North Cemetery: Private Major Harry Stevens Burney, USAF (Ret.) died June 6, 2004 on Sabbath Day at his home in San Antonio at age 83 after a lengthy illness. He was born October 19, 1920 in Dublin, GA to Glover McCall Burney and Caroline Ruth Taylor. Harry attended the University of Georgia and then entered the Army Air Corps as a pilot during World War II. He was part of the 548th Night Fighter Squadron in the Pacific Theater having flown the P61 Black Widow. Harry served 20 years in the U.S. Air Force including service during the Korean War. After retirement from the USAF in 1963, he and his family moved to San Antonio where he became a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service and retired in 1984 after 20 years. He was a member of St. Mark’s United Methodist Church. Harry was an avid golfer and participated in 3 golf associations. Harry touched many people’s lives with integrity, laughter and love. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Myrtis Frances Jester Burney of San Antonio; son, Harry Stevens Burney, Jr. of Lake Jackson, TX; daughter, Susan Burney Suddeth and husband, Wayne; son, Thomas Gordon Burney and wife Nancy, all of San Antonio; grandchildren, Sharla Annell Suddeth and Alan Wayne Suddeth; and sister, Martha Ann Jester of Austin, TX.
