This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Iverson L. Burney, Co A 49th Georgia Infantry. Lt. Burney was one of "The Immortal Six Hundred", Confederate POW's held at Ft. Pulaski near Savannah. These were men who endured extreme inhumane conditions under their Union captors. There are 13 men who refused to Sign an Oath of Allegiance to the North and died at Ft. Pulaski and are buried in an unmarked grave. They are more or less in a mass grave, which the National Parks Service exhumed and then just covered back up. Allison Perry III of the SCV camp, General Robert A. Toombs Camp # 932, in Vidalia Ga. is trying to find someone connected to Lt. Iverson Burney (as well as the rest of the men from other states), get them each a standard marker from the government, and give them each a memorial stone on the mass grave at Ft. Pulaski. Write Jackie if you have any information. Fammaw54@aol.com As Mr. Perry states in his letter published in the magazine, "All these man had to do was sign an oath of allegiance to the U. S. Government. One who succumbed to the deprivations and abuse and signed the oath was said to have "swallowed the yaller dog." The thirteen buried in unmarked graves at Ft. Pulaski were true men of honor, who chose to forfeit their lives rather than dishonor their oath to their Government, the Confederate States of America." Perhaps, if we are lucky, a genealogy buff will recognize Lt. Burney's name and respond. These men deserve to have their names on a tombstone, at the very least. Here are the other fellows buried in the grave as well: Fitzgerald, George B. Captain 12 VA Cav Lane, Christopher C. 3 Lt. 3 NC Inf Burgin, John M. 2 Lt. 22 NC Inf Legg, Russell W. 2 Lt. 50 VA Inf Bradford, Moses J. Captain 10 MO Inf King, ALex M. Captain 50 VA Inf Rosenbalm, Eli A. 2 Lt 27 VA Inf Goodloe, Thomas J. 1 Lt. 44 TN Inf Brumley, Oziah R. Captain 20 NC Inf Eastham, Chapman B. 1 Lt. 10 VA Inf Ganoyway, Jonathan T. 2 Lt 50 VA Inf Tolbert, John H. Captain 5 FL Inf I would appreciate any help you can provide. My husband can get in touch with his Camp Adjutant and get the info to the Camp in Vidalia or someone could get in touch with the SCV HQ in Columbia Tennessee and refer to this article.
