James Burney b 14 Sep1814 Craven Co, NC, grew up on family farm in NC, attended Randolph-Macon College at Boydton. NC, said to have been major on staff of Gov of VA; came to CA in 1849. He contributed much to the early history of Central California, was 1st sheriff of Mariposa Co, then settled in Stanislaus Co where the present town of Riverbank was first developed by him as Burneyville. It has been reported that he kept a diary of his travels and that before he died in 1901, he sent it to his relatives back in North Carolina. Big question: has anyone heard of this diary?? charlie
