Found my BURNEYs in Waterford, Saratoga County New York. RICHARD, KATHERINE, MARY, PATRICK, MICHAEL, JOHANNA, ANNE and ELIZABETH. Moved there in 1856 and lived out their lives, died and were buried there. My great grandmother 'Anna'. Now on to County Wexford from wence they came. I have info on the kids if there is any interest. Slainte, Tim
Dear Listers: I have already sent this to every surname mentioned in this to a Rootsweb Surname List...so please do not forward it to a Rootsweb list. In addition, I have also sent it to all surrounding counties that have mail lists on Rootsweb... I am looking for information on my great-great grandfather. The story that my family has heard all of our lives is that he originated from IRELAND with his brother, and arrived in BOSTON. He wound up fighting for the North in the Civil War (supposedly with Sherman), making his way down to SOUTH GEORGIA. He lost his leg, and somehow wound up at my great-great grandmother's door in WAYNE COUNTY, (HORTENSE), GEORGIA as a very sick man. We do not know if he deserted from perhaps BLACKSHEAR'S PRISON CAMP, ANDERSONVILLE, or just made a run for it on SHERMAN'S MARCH TO THE SEA. It is said that he and another Irish man, who was also a Union Soldier showed up asking for help. My great-great grandmother was SIDNEY PEARSON MOODY, a widow who had four? children. Sidney was the daughter of SIDNAH RAULERSON (daughter of JACOB RAULERSON and NANCY BAGGS), and SAMUEL PEARSON. Sidney's previous husband was SAMUEL MOODY. Three of their children that I definitely know of were: DAVID BARNEY MOODY, JOHN MARTIN MOODY, and MARY JANE MOODY...there is said to be another one by the name of CHARLES EDWIN... Anyway, because it wasn't proper to be caring for a man in her house, they were married in Wayne County on March 22, 1868. They proceeded to have three children of their own: THOMAS (TOM) who never married because his "sweetheart" was killed in an accident, MARIETTA (SIS) who married J.N. ANDERSON and they had no children, and my great-grandfather, LEWIS PRESLEY who married ELIZA STRICKLAND and they had several children to include: BAZELEAR (BAZE), CALLIE, my grandmother, ALICE (who married HENDERSON DAVIS), and MAZELLE, etc. Here is my problem: My great-great grandfather changed his name from something Irish to MANNING because there were already so many MANNINGS in that area. It is my belief that maybe he deserted, or he just wanted to fit in due to being an Irish Catholic, as well as a Union Soldier! On he and Sidney's marriage certificate, he used the name MANNING. In addition, all of the children above used the name MANNING. His friends and family called him JIM or PEG-LEG, as he did get a wooden leg. My great-aunt CALLIE said that she believed someone in the MOODY family (probably one of SIDNEY'S previous children with SAMUEL) had in their possession one time -- a trunk that contained his Union uniform, and pertinent documents relating to his Irish heritage. I am DESPERATELY seeking this information, as it is very difficult to search for our roots in IRELAND when we don't know what his real name was!!! According to the PIONEER'S OF WIREGRASS GEORGIA, and the LDS FILE -- my great-great grandfather is reported to be the son of MARY ANN BURNEY and JOHN MANNING, who had sons named JAMES and LEWIS P. MANNING. Coincidentally, my great-great grandfather named my great grandfather, LEWIS PRESLEY. In addition, their JAMES MANNING lost his leg as a Confederate Soldier...and according to their JAMES' pension file...their birthdates are practically the same! However, the date on the pension record for their JAMES states that he collected up until February 1895. On my great-great grandfather's headstone, it says he died in 1893. Also, according to the LDS FILE -- their JAMES died in 1916. I do know that Huxford's books do have errors in them, as they have my great grandfather LEWIS married to someone named ELISHA KNIGHT. I have never heard of her; he was DEFINITELY married to ELIZA STRICKLAND and they are both buried in the HORTENSE CEMETERY with their children! In addition, my great-great grandfather JAMES, and his wife, SIDNEY are both buried in the RAULERSON CEMETERY. I do not know why she was not buried with her first husband, SAMUEL MOODY. It was always said that my great-great grandfather, JAMES, named my mother's mother, ALICE ANNIE -- because he had lived on the corner of ALICE and ANNIE STREETS in BOSTON. In addition, my great grandfather (LEWIS P. MANNING), was married after my great grandmother died, to ETHEL JOHNSON...and their youngest son is named JAMES MANNING and he is still alive. He was named after his grandfather, and he too, has always heard he was from Ireland. Supposedly, my great-great grandfather named my great aunt BAZELEAR (BAZE) from the Bible...well, in the King James version...there is no such name; however, it is possibly in an Irish Catholic Bible. My mother is adamant that they always visited their kinfolk when she was growing up (she was born in ZIRCLE and raised in HORTENSE)...and that they never visited the MANNINGS...and that she was even told by a doctor with the name MANNING who belonged to that family -- that they were no relation. I have heard from several people via the Internet who tell me I am wrong and that my great-great grandfather was indeed the son of JOHN MANNING and MARY ANN BURNEY. If this is true -- then my grandfather must have done something terribly wrong to make up a tale like that and for he and SIDNEY to never reveal the truth to their children or grandchildren! So, I am looking for the elusive trunk that had his history in it. I have looked in vain for family Bible's, birth and death certificates or even obituary notices of his children that might have mentioned his real last name or that he was from Ireland. I am tired of hitting this brick wall -- I want to know once and for all, what his REAL name was; thereby, I am offering a REWARD for VERY DEFINITE AND AUTHENTICATE PROOF of who my great-great grandfather really was... I would appreciate that if you respond to this notice -- PLEASE do so privately, to Mesheka@aol.com. Thanks for your assistance.
I put up a special web page that has some data on my James BROOKS line from 1776 to the mid 1900's. I think what you are looking for is this link below.... http://www.my-ged.com/db/index/bbrooks/117 I get hundreds of emails a week and if you don't quote a message that I posted somewhere or give me some sort of a clue... It's a little difficult to read minds.... :) I have some Burney ancestors that lived in the Leon Co., and Jefferson Co. area in the northern part of Florida. The connection that I have proof of is Richard Burney who mar. Nancy Jane Brooks... my ancestor. http://www.my-ged.com/db/page/bbrooks/356 There were a number of Burney families in the area around Lake Miccosuki in Jefferson and Leon Co. - Willis, Guilford, Arthur, and Ellis were there in the 1820's through the 1840's. I believe they came there from the Washington Co., GA area during the time of the land lottery in GA. 1805 and on... There are other's that know more than I do... I am studying them in hopes of finding out more about my BROOKS line. I hope this info helps and addresses you interest area. I still would like to know why the tone of your email was 'short' and what LINK you were referring to when you said you were looking for Burney and only got BROOKS. I don't recall leaving a Burney link anywhere.... but I might have. If you would copy the link for me and send it to me... BURNEY, Elizabeth Smith THE FLORIDA SENTINEL, 17 June 1851. OBITUARY. BURNEY, Malinda J. THE SENTINEL, 18 June 1844. MARRIED. On Thursday, the 6th June instant, at the residence of Silas F.Burney, Esquire on the MIccosookie Lake, by George E.Dennis, Esquire, JAMES H.TAYLOR, Esquire, of Jefferson, to Miss MALINDA J., daughter of Willis Burney, deceased, of this county. ------- BROOKS, Nancy Jane THE FLORIDIAN, 28 March 1835. Death of A.Burney Byrd. We record with feelings of deep regret the death of ARTHUR BURNEY BYRD, formerly of this State, but recently a citizen of Texas. He was 1st Lieutenant of a Company of Volunteers from that State, and was on his way to the seat of war in Virginia, where he was taken sick with Typhoid Fever, of which he died after a lingering illness in Richmond. Among those who have fallen prey to disease during the war, none possessed higher attributes to make the true and accomplished soldier, in whatever grade he may have been placed, than BURNEY BYRD. He was possessed of the capacity of mind, of strong physical development and an enduring constitution, with a high and generous ambition in the new sphere upon which he had entered, remarkable for his personal bravery, coolness and self-possession, with a soul to dare any anger-in no one were blended better the qualities to ensure success in the military career upon which he had entered. Alas, he has fallen, a prey to disease upon the threshold of the struggle consequent upon the maintainance of principles to which he has been devoted since the hour of manhood, at the early age of twenty-eight. He was a high-toned gentleman and a devoted friend, frank, kind and sincere in his relations with others. He leaves a father, --- brothers, and many relations and numerous friends to mourn his death, rendered doubly sad by occurring away from them all, amid the gloom and suffering of a military hospital. ----------- BURNEY, Susan C. Cut off in youth, and in the second month of wedded life, the blow falls heavily on her parents and friends, and with redoubled force on him whose happiness had so recently been crowned by their union. ------------ BURNEY, Silas F. THE FLORIDA SENTINEL, 1 March 1853. OBITUARY. Dued at Benton, Alabama, SILAS F.BURNEY, Esquire, recently of this city. --------- Died of Gastris, on the 10th instant, on Lake Miccossukie, in the twentieth year of her age, Mrs.ELIZABETH BURNEY, wife of Richard M.Burney, and eldest daughter of Patrick and Sarah Smith. The character of the deceased needs no panegyric. To know her was to love her, and those who knew her best loved her most. Her loss may indeed well be mourned as that of an affecionate and dutiful daughter, and wife, and friend, whose gentle influence was ever felt for good; but chiefly in her religious character, will her memory be cherished. In her the Methodist Church has lost one its most faithful and exemplary members, whose daily walk and conversation adorned and illustrated her profession, and whose death displayed the power of a saving faith. Upon her sick bed her thoughts and prayers dwelt much and earnestly upon the spiritual interests of those whose destinies in life had been linked with her's. She was able to bear her physical sufferings with a cheerful resignation, and in the article of death to say, with pious confidence..."Though He slay me yet will I trust in Him." -- - ------------------------------------------------- The Brooks Historian - Bill Brooks http://home.fda.net/bbrooks/public_html/brooks.htm http://www.my-ged.com/db/surnames/bbrooks/A mailto:bbrooks@fda.net Surnames - ARCHER, BROOKS, BURNEY, EDMONDS, FREEMAN, GOFF, GRACE, HALL, KNAPP, MANNING, TAYLOR, WILSON - -------------------------------------------------

Do you know of someone who might know about John? Thanks, Alex Burney -------------------- If you can help Alex, please reply directly to him *and* to this list so that we all may be informed.
