They came from County Wexford in Ireland, RICHARD BURNEY and CATHERINE KENSLEY BURNEY in 1848 and settled in Waterford, Saratoga County New York, USA. They raised all their kids there and I have all of them through that generation and some in the next generation. But all, except for my great grandmother, ANNA (JOHANNA) BIRNEY who moved to and lived in Elkhorn Wisconsin, lived in and around Saratoga County New York. Whether the name is/was BIRNEY/BURNEY is unknown as they could not read or write for the census taker. The children of Richard and Catherine used both spellings. ANNA BIRNEY insisted on the BIRNEY spelling. Any help given greatfully and accepted with appreciation. Rick, I don't know whether this will help or not. My 3x great-grandfather was Lindsey Mabry Burney. I have Lindsey's family well documented, so I know your James Samuel Burney is not in his family. However, he had a brother, Morrison Burney who settled in Georgia, very close to the Alabama line; his family is not one that I have documented. It could be that you might need to pursue lines there, as well as Alabama. However, I do need to add that both Lindsey and Morrison were born in North Carolina, not Alabama. Sharon

I don't know of all the connections, but I do know this. Burney ancestors were in Washington Co., GA during the 1805 Land lottery as were BROOKS ancestors. Those same Burney ancestors moved some of their families to the Jefferson/Leon Co. Fl area at the same time as My Brooks ancestors, 1826-29. And Richard Burney married the sister of my gggrandfather James R. Brooks. Her name was Nancy Jane Brooks. They had John Fletcher Burney, Susan Burney, Peyton P. Burney, Jane Burney. Richard BURNEY's father was Willis Burney b.1770-75. who was the son of Richard Burney b. abt. 1744, who was the brother to your David Burney . Richard's offspring moved to Florida and bought land in Jefferson Co. and Leon County and Suwanee Co. I believe. I have a listing of the land owners in that area that name them specifically. Anyway, That is the only connection I have proof for. I also have an invitation that was in my family bible to the funeral of K.C. Burney at the Oakland Plantation, Lake Providence, LA. That is where James A. Brooks, Son of James R. Brooks moved. So, there were Burney ancestors living with BROOKS ancestors there as well. Here is a link to the image I scanned of the invitation.... http://home.fda.net/bbrooks/public_html/bh/bible03.htm So, my conclusion is that the families were linked, in at least 3 places if not more and they migrated into the deep south from Georgia to Florida and on to Louisiana, and who knows where else.... - Bill Brooks jgpark@juno.com wrote: > > I am sorry that I don't know anything about the newspaper. Gladys, I do have some Burney data. I have a connection to the Burney line through Richard and Nancy Jane Brooks of Fla. Abt. 1850's...I would guess. The info I have on Nancy Jane BROOKS puts her in her adolescent stage in the 1830's. Most of the Burney Data I have was given to me in a GEDCOM file. I can't even recall who it was that gave it to me right now, I could look it up though if you want. I don't have anything more on Mariah or her family than what you probably saw on "My Gedcom". Are you subscribed to the Rootsweb 'Burney' list server? I get emails from it all the time that are from other researchers looking at the Burney lines. If you need info about that I can supply it. In fact... I will copy your message to it so maybe you can hook up with someone who knows more about this particular branch than I do..Good hunting. - Bill Brooks jgpark@juno.com wrote: > > I found his name listed with no information.
