I am looking for information on a John Burney, who was supposed to have been murdered as he ate dinner, by his slave in Louisiana. This information comes from a letter written in the 1860's. This John Burney was the son of a William Burney, who migrated to the Ouachita area of Louisiana, maybe in 1797 from North Carolia, via Kentucky. I'm wondering if somehow this story got twisted around, and we are referencing the same person and murder. I don't know when this murder in Louisiana happened. But I believe it would have had to happen between 1795 and 1815.

I am missing a link. Maybe we can help each other. My ggrandfather was James J. Burney born abt. 1858. Married Mary Ann Story in 1879 in Lauderdale, Ala. Bayless Weathers signed his marriage license (a son of Mary and Bill weathers.) He also lived next door to James B. Burney in the 1880 census. That stated he was born in Missouri. Living with James B. at the time were two other young boys. John & WIlliam Burney. I like to think they were James J. brothers. I had heard that my James J. was raised by an uncle when his father & mother died. I am missing who his father is and therefore missing that connection to all the other Burneys in Lauderdale. Since he was born in Missouri, perhaps he a child of some who went there in the early 1800's with Charles Burney. I am going to Lauderdale sometimes this summer to search records. Will let you know if I find anything. Look forward to hearing fro! m you. Alice

With Burney and his unnamed 46 year old wife, were"Elisabeth Arrie, (opheline) 1, and Datis "Negrisse da dit Burney". Also arriving on May 7th, 1797 was William Burney, fils, 28 years old, his wife, and sons Jean, Jacque and William. (John, James, and William). An undated "indenture" paper we have in our possession, claims that "Hannah" an 11 year old indentured servant came with the Sr. Burney to the Ouachita, yet she does not appear on the list of those arriving on May 7. According to this document, Hannah's indenture to William Sr. came from, his son John Burney, who had acquired the indentured Hannah from William England. We know that Hannah was born in February of 1786, and we know she petitioned the courts for release from her bond in March of 1815. Only her first apprenticeship "paper" is dated, May 29, 1786. The subsequent transfers have no date, and like the first, have no State, County or officiators name affixed. Does anyone recognize this William Burney, Sr., and know where he lived previous to 1797? We know that he joined the Baron de Bastrop party of migrants in Louisville, Kentucky--but we don't know if he lived there, or just met the group there. The migration trail led them to New Madrid, then Natchez, and finally the Ouachita Valley. Is the William Burney Sr., related to the Robert Burney who settled in the Delta, Madison Parish, Louisiana area?

Hi Anna, My mother-in-law's maiden name is Burney (that's why I started this list, i.e. to get on her good side ;-)). Her father was Richard Andrew Burney of Copiah County, MS. His father was Alonzo Pleasant Burney who lived "on the Big Black river in Mississppi" as I am told. Have no idea in which county or town, however. Alonzo and his wife Alice Montora Tillman had six children: Fannie Talitha, Benjamin Tillman, Oscar Hackett, Mary Emma, Alice and Richard Andrew. Alonzo died two years before his wife and she died when the eldest child, Fannie, was only 14 years old. My m-i-l tells me that Fannie and Richard raised the children themselves after their parent's death. I don't have dates and locations for these Burney's and as my m-i-l is 90 years old she has trouble remembering them. I suspect that there is a connection between your B. Burney's family and Alonzo's family but will have to do a lot more research before I can confirm that. If I do find anything I'll certainly let you know. Does anyone have any information on William Burney who migrated to the Ouachita Valley area of the Louisiana Territory in 1797? He apparently had sons, William, James and John---all who died as very young men, and a daughter Ann who married a James Barton in Ouachita Parish, La. in 1821? We are interested in knowing where William Sr. lived prior to coming to the Ouachita (with the Baron de Bastrop migration).

Hannah McMurtry Hargrave was apprencticed by her mother's husband, Hezekiah Hargrave to William England of Kentucky in May of 1786. Soon afterwards, England tranfered his indenture paper to John Burney, who then transferred the document to his father William Burney. These events, should have taken place in Lincoln/Logan Co., Kentucky. By 1797 this William Burney/Birney migrated to the Ouachita area of NE Louisiana bringing his children and little Hannah. In 1815 Hannah was released from the indenture by the courts in Ouachita Parish, La. There is some confusing data surrounding all of this. First, John, who according to the indenture documents of the 1780's, was the son of William Burney, Sr. Papers found in the Ouachita detailing William Burney Sr's death and estate settlement, and the Senate Land Hearing of 1852 depositions---claim that William Burney Sr's son John was born about 1787---so he of course, could not have been the person who recv'd the indenture agreement from William England. A week only search of the Birneys in NC and Kentucky reveals numerous William Burney Sr's and William Burney Jr's---and a healthy quanity of Johns and James. What we know for sure--or from depositions, census and assessment type records is this. William Birney Sr. came to the Ouachita in 1797 as part of the Barron de Bastrop settlement bubble. He brought an unnamed wife and children, and a named son William Jr. Later documents claim William Sr. was the father of John who was 10, James 5 and William Jr 1 1/2 when they arrived on the Ouachita. That document also claims daughter Anne was born there on the Ouachita. This Ann married James Barton at the Ouachita in 1821. In the early 1800's Williams Jr. and Sr. claimed in a sworn statement against Zadoc Harmon in the Ouachita---to have been Harmon's neighbors in North Carolina. William Jr., William Sr's wife was Anne ?, and she is called a widow in 1815 when she testifies in Hannah's indenture hearing. Dates and palces do not match or add up. Do you know of a William Burney who perhaps lived in North Carolina, maybe Kentucky---and then finally settled in the Ouachita area of Louisiana. We know he was on the Ouachita in 1797, 1808, and in 1810. Thanks shirley

We have Anna Ollie Burney in our website database as the daughter of Christopher Columbus Burney (1852-1934) and Martha Jane Howell (1860-1953), and her marriage to Charles M. Grisham was 24 Dec 1905 as you noted. Anna Ollie was one of 13 siblings. We show her death date as 9 Jul 1980 and buried in Sinking Creek Cemetery west of Ash Grove, Missouri. The couple had 7 children. I do not have any data on the ancestors of Charles M. Grisham. The data on her children is in our website which is best viewed with Internet Explorer: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~burney/ Anna Ollie Burney was the great aunt of Lawrence Leland Harper (the President of our Burney Reunion Organization) . He probably has more data on the Grisham family, and I have forwarded your inquiry to him. You may not hear from him for a week or so as he is going to have some surgery tomorrow(3/11) and it may take a while for him to get back into action. We would appreciate any additional information that your friend might have on either the Grisham or the Burney families, especially source documents (or where we can find them) and any pictures, bible birth/marriage/death pages, etc. May we also have his name, address and phone number? We would like to add this to the website, and as a result we may be able to get a lot more inquiry/data on Grishams for your friend. Hope you find this information helpful. Please let us know if we can be of further help. Regards, John P. Moore
