Dear BURNEY, ALLEN, BARNETT, and HANCOCK List: Re: men named Shadrack, Jeremiah and Hardy in those surnames For quite sometime now I have been researching BARNETT lineage for my husband's 3rd great grandfather, Shadrack BARNETT, born: 1826 in ?/poss. Carroll County, Georgia where he lived and died, and just now on Mic BARNETTE's DNA testing for BARNETT, (and variations of the name,) I found information about a man who was named Shadrack BURNEY who was in Greene County, Georgia in 1790 and found that many who had lived in Greene County, Georgia then later lived in Carroll County. In addition, this Shadrack BURNEY and brothers, Jeremiah BURNEY, and Hardy BURNEY, and other siblings had lived with their parents in Greene County, North Carolina, which may indicate a connection with the name GREENE in NC and GA. In addition, there is a relationship to families of the name of ALLEN and HANCOCVK that were in Greene County, North Carolina as well that had the same given names of Shadrack and Hardy. Is there anyone that might be able to assist with whether or not this Shadrack BURNEY might, indeed, be the ancestor of my Shadrack BARNETT who later married Ann/Martha "Ann" FIELDER. Looking forward to hearing from you. Thank you. Vaya Con Dios, Bellinda Myrick-Barnett " Heb Dduw heb ddim . Dduw a digon." The only Aunt who was old enough to remember anything in detail, gave an account that my husbands family were originally named Wright, but took the name of Burney after changing location and slave master.

I have not been able to connect them to the William Burney Sr. who migrated to the Ouachita in 1797. Interestingly, a few weeks back I noticed a query somewhere that spoke of a Burney traveling to the Washita, but did not mention a territory or state. It crossed my mind that Washington and Ouachita/Washita could easily be confused. William Burney, Sr. can into posession, at some place and point in time of two people I am interested in, Darcas a young slave or free born black girl, and Hannah an indentured servant born of a white mother in North Carolina. Both girls were born in 1786. Hannah was indentured first to a guy called England, and then to John Burney (who was supposed to have been murdered by the slave), who finally transfered the indenture papers to his father William Burney, Sr. William Burney's arriaval on the Ouachita in 1797 is documented, as is that of his adult son William Jr. Though Burney family researchers claim that William left Kentucky with his sons, we've found no proof of anyone other than William Jr. traveling with him to the Ouachita. His son John was supposedly living further south near Rapides Parish, which at that time touched the then huge Ouachita Parish. Ouachita then extended south to the Red River and east to the Mississippi....so there are all kinds of possibilities as to where John was living and murdered. More than you want to know---but I am desparate to track this Burney family, and of course, if this John was really murdered, there is the possibility of good information about his life, family, background and estate. Thanks

I had found it strange that there were no Burneys in the territorial census or tax lists of the area, so it is entirely possible that this family was there for a very short time. In 1813 and 1814 the area was considered the "eastern frontier" of the MS territory and was the scene of the Creek War which included the massacre at Fort Mims, the biggest Indian massacre in American history. Many people, especially newcomers fled went on to the safer, more settled portion of the territory around Natchez and environs. I am sure they could have gone on to Louisiana just as well. Chances are this is the same story, not "remembered" accurately. The court documents give no details about the victim other than the murder occurred on Dec. 27, 1814. The murderer was Bob, a slave belonging to Thomas Bassett, a longtime resident of the territory. He was convicted, escaped, but was eventually hanged for the offence in March of 1815.You know how family stories change through the years, !8! 60 is a fairly long time after the event.
