In fact Samual and Hannah (Hesp) Burn had two children they called SHB, the first died 7 years before the second was born. Carolyn Just to clarify the point I was making in my response to your query - in item 2 of my previous message the "they" I referred to were William Burn and Margaret Annie Burn (Puckrin) with this William being one of the sons of Samuel B and Hannah Hesp. hope this helps Rob Burn

Both deaths were registered in the E Grinstead district in the BDMs for England and Wales. I am trying to trace descendants of this family to complete research into the Barnett family. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/FlG.2ACEB/61.1.2.2 Message Board Post: Hi having recently read the list of messages I may be able to help with some info: 1 Linda are you sure the name of your gggfather was Samuel Holdway Burn? Samuel Burn (b1832) and Hannah Hesp(b1833) had many children including SHB who was born in 1863 but who then died in 1864. They also had a son Samuel born in 1871 who died in 1919. I think this second Samuel is your gggfather but our family records do not show him also having the middle name Holdway. Can you confirm that this was the case? In total SB and HH had 13 children including the above 2 Samuels, a Robert, a Hilda and a John - so the names were being carried down to the next generation ie the children of your gggfather. I hope this helps and if there is any info that you could share I would be pleased to receive it and if there is anything more you want pl let me know. 2 Carolyn I think you have the name wrong for the wife of Samuel Burn see above - it's not HEAP but HESP. They had 8 children two of whom were called Hannah Hesp Burn and John Hesp Burn. Hannah married George Cummins (with decendents going to Australia) and John died in infancy 3 Carolyn William Burn was a retired pensioner after having left the Lancers in 1880 - he lost 3 fingers in a battle at Killa Kazi during the Indian Mutiny. He was pensioned out of the army and later became a school relieving officer. If you are still interested I will try to send a photo of William with wife and some children. He did live in East Terrace for a time but also at various other addresses in Whitby and see 4 below. As mentioned above William and Margaret had 8 children in total but no Hilda. William died in 1941 and Margaret (Maggie) died in 1943. 4 Carolyn You mention that a John Holdway Burn married Jane Boulby Smith but see the note above. Also it's interesting that one of William B's sisters, Mary married Adam Boulby. Later in his life William and Maggie lived at Boulby House just outside Whitby. Let me know if you need any more and I would be pleased to have any info you could share. thanks Rob Burn ( the Andrew B of an earlier message on this page is my son)

Some of Burn family of North & South Shields were Tyne River Pilots e.g. Lancelot Burn & Brittain Burn. Pilots were/are a close band whose tradition was passed from father to son though, sadly, this has declined in relation to the decline of river traffic & industries such as shipbuilding, ship-repairing & the shipping trade re. carrying.

I have been told that this family go back to North Shields Northumberland in the early 1800 Sunderland is on the coast, as is North and South Shields, so it is very feesable that they could have come from ancestors who were fisher men! There are a few on the census for North-Northumberland, when I get a chance I will post a message with the links on . What did you mean by (Also, Sunderland seafaring Burn often related to South Shields seafaring Burn & Tyne Pilots) Have you information about the later? Carole Robinson
