I have looked on the 1871 census and found a Charles William Burn b abt 1868 in London who is described as grandson, the head of the household is Eliza Burn b in Scotland and they are living in Carlisle Parade, Hastings. Could that be your Charles? Secondly to update things, I recieved today the birth certificate for William Burn b 13/5/1840 1 Teale Street, Bethnal Green, parents Joseph Burn (Lighterman) and Sarah Pace. So that means the children of Joseph and Sarah I found on the IGI (see my earlier msg) are very likely my relatives. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: djwebb18 Surnames: Burn, March Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.burn/156/mb.ashx Message Board Post: My 3xGreat Grandfather is Joseph Burn a Lighterman. His son My 2xGreat Grandfather is William Burn who married Mary Jane March in 1875 in Stepney. William's residence at the time is 15 South Grove, Stepney. On the 1871 census William is the head of the family living with his two sisters Jane and Sarah. Does any of this ring any bells with anyone? I have traced 8 children of a Joseph Burn and Sarah, at Saint Matthew's Bethnal Green, on the IGI and this includes a William b1840. But on the 1875 marriage certificate he is said to be 32. Joseph and Sarah's daughter Jane appears to be on the 1871 census as Neice, living with William and Hannah Burn and their 3 kids. Further tracing on the IGI plus the 1851 census gives me William married to Louisa with 2 or 3 sons (2 at St Dunstan's Stepney and 1 at St Leonards Shoreditch) and then marrying Hannah and having 7 children (all St Dunstan's). I don't know if the William and his families, icluding Neice Jane, are the same family as Joseph and Sarah and their kids. I also don't know if my William is the same one as Joseph and Sarah's. I would appreciate any help or advice or information anyone can give me. In return I can give much more details of the families I've mentioned here and the descendants of my William Burn and Mary March. Many Thanks Dan Webb Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. My great-grandmother was Henrietta Burn-Schilling from NYC. Her brother was William H.W. Burn, Sr., also from NYC originally. William and his wife, Elizabeth Schilling-Burn had at least 8 children that I am aware of: Marie, Charles, Henrietta, William Jr., George, Edith, Frank and Theodore. Theodore Burn was a first cousin to my grandmother, Marie Schilling. Theodore married Doris Litchfield about 1931/32. They had at least one son, Sheldon Leroy Burn b. Sept 11, 1932. Sheldon Burn was the biological father of my oldest brother, so I am trying to find information on Theodore and Sheldon's family. Would love to be in contact with any distant cousins out there and to learn any information on any of the above mentioned as well as copies of scanned photos of any of the above Burn family members. William and his sister Henrietta were born to a Charles Burn (possibly Charles Brown Burn) and Henrietta Webb. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. William Burn, my great grandfather and the man who lost 3 fingers in battle, had a sister called Margaret Hesp Burn who married Adam Boulby in 1891. They had at least 5 children including the Minnie, Ernest, Doris and Edmund(Edward) that you mention, all having the surname Boulby. Doris Boulby then married Philip Lawson in 1921, subsequently having at least 2 children, one of whom (I think) is you, John. so we are (distantly ) related....but it doesn't end there. Your grandmother, Margaret Hesp (nee)Burn, had another brother called Samuel Holdsworth Burn who married Jane Boulby Smith. Samuel was a master mariner and he and his wife moved to Australia, having 5 children. I am in contact with some of the descendents who now live in Australia and also New Zealand. Some of the relatives from New Zealander cam across to stay with us a few years ago. I don't subscribe to ancestry so cannot send an email direct because they stop nonscubscribers emailing direct. However my email address is rob.burn.2 (at) fsmail.net, obviously replace the at with the usual sign. However my mother was Doris Boulby (not Burn) and my Father was Philip. We used to visit Uncle William when I was a boy and he used to insist on shaking hands with me as he realised I did not like shaking 2 fingers. I have made contact with the family of my Aunt Minnie Boulby and Uncle Edward Boulby - Ernest Boulby, their brother, was Purser on SS Normandie. I have lots of papers and emails from Boulby's which I can scan and send to you if you would let me have your postal address. You could then make contact with the direct. Hope this helps John Philip Lawson PS I may have inadvertently attached a file which will be of no interest to you - at 82 am getting past it which is another reason why I would rather do things by post. He lost his fingers in the battle at Killa Kazi in Afghanistan in 1879 when he was in the 9th Lancers. I have several mementoes including his paybook in which he signs for his pay every month until his fingers were lost after which he signs with an X. I also have a bible given to him by Rev Adams and signed by Adams who won the VC during the fighting. After losing his fingers William returned to Whitby and became the Relieving Officer, living in Phoenix House (now a carpark!), eventually dying in 1941. He was part of a family having many connections with Whitby, including being the family after which Burn's Yard is named. William's sister Margaret Hesp Burn married Adam Boulby and they had four children including the Doris Burn you mention. Doris married Phillip Lawson and so William is your great uncle. I'd be interested in exchanging info about the Boulbys - who also have other connections with the Burn family. Rob Burn Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
