    1. [BURN] BURNE Family Photograph
    2. Shelley Cardiel
    3. I've "rescued" an old photograph of Nellie E. BURNE of Ellicottville, NY which was taken at the Bronson Studio in Lima, NY and dated with the Class of 1895 at Genessee Wesleyan Seminary. Nellie appears to be in her teens at the time the photograph was taken. Based on limited research I was able to locate the following information regarding Nellie and her family: Nellie E. BURNE was b. 11 Nov 1874 in Rochester, NY to parents Walter E. BURNE (b. 1839) and Mary M. HEATH (b. 1844). Nellie was one of 9 children born to this couple including, Emma E.; Lula or Loula Sophia; Dora Mary; Nellie E.; Edwin "Eddie" W.; Florence Belle; and Maud Alena; Bertie; and Herman Cheever BURNE, all born between 1865 and 1886. Nellie married Walter E. RASEY (1858-1944) and she had one daughter, Helen M. RASEY (1907-1967). Nellie died 16 Apr 1950 in Ellicottville, NY and is buried in the Forest Lawn Cemetery in Buffalo, NY. Her obituary indicates that she had one daughter, Miss Helen RASEY of Sonyea, NY and two sisters, Mrs. Otto HUNZIKER of La Grange, IL; Mrs. Harry STARR of Bradford, NY who survived her. Census records provide the following details: 1880 census of Youngsville, PA: Walter BURN, age 42, a Speculator, born NY, parents born England/NY Mary BURN, wife, age 34, Keeping House, born NY, parents born NY Lula S. My brother recently had his y-dna tested and it appears Hobbs is not our genetic surname. From what I have it appears we could be either from the Mizelle and it's variations line or Byrnes line. I am looking for any situation where maybe a Hobbs man raised children that were either Mizelle or Brynes and gave the children his surname Hobbs. If you have any information, please let me hear back from you. Thanks, Libby Hobbs Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I have been researching my stepfather's family tree over the past few years and had a look around the internet again recently. He is the one descended from Catherine Burns via Catherine Murphy. (On his paternal side, he is descended from royalty - lucky bugger's got the lot). I only discovered them a day ago when googling. Suddenly, all was revealed as to why I couldn't find anything on Catherine Sayers and the cryptic references around the place to Murphy. I can't find any more conclusive info on the internet and would appreciate any information that you have on the two Catherines and Thomas Murphy. My email is bernard2000@gmail.com. I have a hunch that Catherine Burns is in the book 'Notorious Strumpets and Dangerous Girls', do you know if that is the case? Regards, Bernard. Author: ozecard Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.burn/151.1.3.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Dear Bernard, Thank you for your message. Yes, you are quite correct with the latter details on Catherine & William. When I started researching, in 2008, I had a relative convince me of the first Catherine Murphy and got all her details. It didn't quite add up with our oral family history, so further research has revealed the truth (with documentation to back it up). I had to 'let go' of the first Catherine whose mother was quite a notorious convict! As a matter of fact I put flowers on the grave of Catherine & William Stuart Christmas morning. Best wishes, Carol Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. From my research, Catherine Murphy the daughter of Thomas Murphy and Catherine Burn was born in VDL and married John Drane in 1846 when he was using the alias of William Seacombe after absconding. Later they lived and farmed at Falmouth VDL using the surname Drane and migrated to the colony of Victoria in abt 1861 to Gippsland. She used the false maiden name of Sayers/Seers/Sears to hide her family history. She died in Traralgon, Vic in 1907. The Catherine Murphy who married William Stuart appears to have been born in Ireland and died in Tasmania. " STUART (STEWART), William: (1833-1910) (Variation in spelling of surname on various registrations, but latter generations use the 'ua' name.) Born in Scotland and emigrated to Launceston, Tasmania in 1852. Married Irish immigrant Catherine MURPHY in 1858. They moved to the north west coast where William purchased land at the Dial Range and then North Motton where he was a successful farmer. Family of 8 children - William (jnr), Mary, Catherine, John, Margaret k/a Ellen, Christian Patrick k/a Patrick, Ann and James k/a Jim. William died aged 76 yrs and is buried in the Ulverstone General Cemetery (headstone in Catholic section), with his wife. 2nd g-grandfather of Carol Axton. This William Burn (my ggf), the one in the 9th Lancers, was born in Whitby in 1854 and died in 1941. From the other items I've put on the board, you'll see that he was injured in Afghanistan (nothing changes) in 1879. Give me some details of the possible link and I'll dig out what I have to explore the connection. I have a pic taken around 1940 showing WB and one of his former colleagues in the army.
