Our sympathies and prayers go out to you and your family during your time of mourning.---Rick B] Marie S. Berkheiser LEBANON Marie S. Berkheiser, 87, of 735 Broad St., Lebanon, and formerly a resident of Linden Village for four years, died Monday, March 5, 2007, of natural causes at The Good Samaritan Hospital, Lebanon. She was the wife of the late Robert E. Berkheiser who died in 2002. Born in Lebanon on December 7, 1919, she was the daughter of the late Horace and Sarah Allwein Rudy. She was a member of the 1935 Lebanon Catholic High School Girls Championship Basketball Team and an avid bowler having won 14 trophies. She was chairwoman of the local campaign to raise funds for the operation of Lebanon's "Blue Baby" Elaine Watson. Elaine, a 7-year-old girl with a congenital malformation of the heart, was able to receive corrective surgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital as a result of the fundraising efforts headed by Marie in the late 1940s. Marie was a member of St. Mary's Church, Lebanon. Surviving is one daughter, Col. Jeanne Berkheiser of San Antonio, Texas; and one son, Robert P., husband of Linda Berkheiser of Gibsonia, Pa.; four grandchildren; and six greatgrandchildren. Several nieces and nephews. She was the last of her immediate family. Services and interment on Holy Cross Cemetery, Lebanon, at the convenience of the family. Memorial contributions may be made to Lebanon Catholic School, c/o Marie Rudy Berkheiser Scholarship Fund, 1400 Chestnut St., Lebanon, PA 17042. Abt 1902 John A. married Amanda Berkheiser.They had one child: 2. Helen R. Sechrist. Born on 1 Jan 1903 in Adamsville, York Co., PA. Helen R. died in the home of her granddaughter in Max Meadows, VA on 23 Feb 2006, she was 103. Buried on 28 Feb 2006 in Mount Rose Cemetery. Occupation: private duty nurse. Education: the School of Practical Nursing, graduated in 1959. Religion: Messiah United Methodist Church for over 50 years. She married Veard A. "Spottie" Comfort. Veard A. "Spottie" died in 1959. Best Wishes, Geri ==================== NEWSPAPER TIDBITS Rick Berkheiser "The South Bend Weekly Tribune", Saturday, January 15, 1898, page 9 ROBBED A RAILROAD OFFICE. Cash Drawer at Three I Freight House Emptied--Cigars Stolen. Between 5 and 6 o'clock Wednesday evening the money drawer at the Three I railroad freight house was robbed of $25 or $30 in cash by some unknown person. The railroad employes were in the yard at the time. A. G. Bailey's cigar factory, in the rear of 1029 West Jefferson street, was broken into Wednesday night and robbed of 900 cigars. The police commissioners appointed another patrolman Wednesday night. The new appointee is Andrew Hansen. He is a Dane, 30 years old, a democrat and lives with his family at 732 Brick avenue. His height is 5 feet and 11 inches and his weight 187 pounds. He will go on duty to-night. A commission composed of Justices Bates and Whitcomb and Drs. Berteling and Butterworth adjudged Frandk De Wagner, of this city, to be of unsound mind Thursday. -------------------- "The South Bend Weekly Tribune", Saturday, March 18, 1905, page 11 Henry A. Peed. Henry A. Peed, formerly of this city, died at his home in Warrensburg, Mo., a few days ago. Mr. Peed was at one time editor of the South Bend Times.
