When will it end? I have no clue. I'm not a meteorologist nor do I play one on TV. :-) There aren't many professions out there where you can be wrong all the time and still keep your jobs. And get paid good money for doing it! How many of you are getting tired of the Doppler Boys on your local TV and radio stations? Don't all of you raise your hands at once. :-) We'll be reporting some of the idiocy that passes for weather forecasting in this section. I long for the days when Dick Addis did the weather with his dry erase weather maps and black markers. Now that was when weather forecasting was fun! Today, we have computer generated data that will tell you that it will sprinkle on your forehead on the corner of Main and Broadway before the 6 o'clock news and the TV Stom Team will be there live to broadcast it. Sheesh! Its time for some good ol' fashioned weather common sense that doesn't come from a computer generated model or some pretty radar image showing you the latest ground clutter. You won't see any of that here. No eight to ten day forecasts. Nope. Not here either. The Doppler Boys can't even predict what's going to happen in 24 hours let alone what's going to happen a week in advance. And they expect us to believe they can predict Global Warming? But I digress. My main focus in this section will be the weather conditions (or lack thereof) of the South Bend area. The only weather equipment I'll be using is my barometer and my arthritis. Today was another mild one. That's it. What else did you want me to say? It feels like November out there? If you're planning your next snowmobile trip, you might want to look at Alaska. That maybe the only place this winter where you'll be able to find any significant snow. Oh yeah. I forgot. You can always go to Denver, Colorado where they have more than their fair share of snow this winter. ==================== MISSING LINKS >From Rick Berkheiser This week's MISSING LINK is Annie M. Iron clad secrecy in connection with the meetings of the committee of the whole of the common council may be a thing of the past within the next several weeks. Indications are the council will be asked at its next meeting to suspend the rule, whereby the newspapers and public alike are denied the proceedings of the committee sessions. Councilmen themselves are divided on the question, and the abandonment of the policy may result. Solons favoring the abolishment of the scheme argue the taxpayers are kept informed on the doings of the council and the committee and are able to attend meetings when matters of interest are scheduled. In spite of the desire for secrecy in connection with last night's meeting, word of the council committee's action was made known to-day. Probably the most important matter up for discussion was the proposed investigation of the alleged excessive gas rate in South Bend. City Attorney Iden S. Romig, who is in charge of the probe, met with the committee to discuss the matter. A proposition of the city park board to lease land for an extension of Howard park was also discussed. Considerable opposition was offered by members of the council to the plan. A communication from Rabbi Abraham Cronbach, of Temple Beth-El, asking for the establishment of a municipal lodging house in the city was considered. The matter will be taken up again by the council Monday night. ==================== BERKHEISER VARIATIONS Geri Brennan [Geri is a regular contributor to many PA Mailing Lists at Rootsweb.
