As we woke up this morning to get ready for church or whatever your day's activities included; we looked out our bedroom windows around 7 AM and saw a dark, gloomy thick layer of fog enveloping everything around us. The temperatures this morning almost felt winter-like, too. Our thermometer at the "Weather Command Center"--hey, if the Doppler Boys can have their fancy shmancy names, so can I--it actually read 32 dgrees. A rarity this winter. There was even a heavy frost all over everything. By the time we left for church, the fog had lifted and it was smooth sailing down the road. Here's the road report from the Weather Mystery Machine. Its a red 1993 van that's weathered many stoms and its a mystery that it still runs. The road report showed the roads in great condition (potholes excluded) with some dampness and no slippery spots around 8:30 AM. Aronund Noon, road conditions were dry. The Doppler Boys can rest easy today. My good friend, George, had an interesting theory to all of this goofy weather and it agrees somewhat with what I think. George was saying we see our weather in cycles every 30 years or so. At least that's what they think in California. Now I'm not much for the "Left Coast" thinking but this idea made some sense. If you look at our own Northern Indiana weather, you can almost trace the current warm up back to 1979. Do all of you remember that year? That was the year we had the unusually warm Christmas Day of almost 70 degrees. We can all remember going outside to play Touch Football or just enjoying the outdoors, period. No White Christmas that year. It almost felt hot outside. If I recall correctly, we shattered an old record high that year for Dec. 25. The last weather cycle began in 1949 which was the cold and snowy winter cycle. This period wass filled with big blizzards and cold snaps that became legendary. These include the back-to-back blizzards of 1976-1978. All of these occurred towards the end of January. In all three of these storms, our snow was measured in FEET and not INCHES. The TV weathernen of the day even had trouble getting to work in those stoms. If I recall correctly, Dick Addis was stranded at the station during one of the storms and he did the newscast that day singlehandedly. The South Bend newspaper even shutdown because they couldn't get enough people in to print the paper, let alone deliver it that night. Now THOSE WERE REAL WINTERS. The year 1979 began a new 30 year cycle which is currently beginning its 26th year. If trends continue, the Winter of 2006-07 will be among the warmest on record for Northern Indiana. Do we have four more years of mild winters ahead of us before the next 30 year cycle? We shall soon find out. Stayed tuned.... Today's Weather Forecast. My left knee is telling me that the rain we're having right now might turn to snow later on. The current temp is 38 degrees with a stiff breeze from the East. Today's Weather Word is FOGFROSTY.
