Greetings, Listers— It's once again the time of year when folks are unwrapping their new computers and discovering the wonderful world of internet genealogy. Since I have noticed that a number of the lists I administrate have gained subscribers this month (especially in the last 24 hours), I thought it would be a fitting time to call for a Roll Call. The purpose of a Roll Call is to let others on the list (especially those just joining us) know what surnames (pertinent to the list) we are working on and in what areas they resided, as well as some other basic information (spouses, children, etc.) Since some of these lists have throngs of people on them and some have, well...less than a dozen, here are a few simple rules that will help the Roll Call move along more smoothly: 1. In the subject of your message, type: RC: John & Jill DOE (RC stands for Roll Call, and then type who you are looking for. Please, don't just type the SURNAME! [On a surname list, everyone is looking for the same SURNAME] Always put the SURNAME in all caps) 2. In your message, type your pertinent information, the email address you can be contacted at, and any applicable URLS (website addresses) you have that relate to your family. 3. If you wish to respond to a Roll Call message, please do so initially off-list, by replying directly to the author of the post. If you find a difinitive connection, you may later wish to post that to the list to let others know of the connection. 4. This Roll Call will last until January 2, 2001. After that, we'll do one once a quarter, or maybe twice a year or something along those lines, depending upon how many subscribe to the list. Of course, new subscribers will post their lines as they join. Please remember to let your family members, friends, genealogy society members, coworkers, etc. know about the wonderful lists at Rootsweb.com; they are a great help to many genealogists. With warm wishes for a prosperous New Year, Vince Leibowitz, List Administrator vpltz@peoplescom.net
Greetings, listers. I received this on another list I subscribe to and though I should send it to all of the lists I moderate for your information. Vince Leibowitz Listowner -----Original Message----- From: Vanessa Burzynski [mailto:burzynsk@swbell.net] Sent: Monday, September 04, 2000 12:44 AM To: GERMAN-TEXAN-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [GER-TEX] Genealogy Scam My apologies to everyone for sending that "messed up" message previously. I should have known to cut and paste first. My mistake. Here is the message again and hopefully you can read the whole thing. Again, sorry if you receive this on more than one list but felt it was important enough to be forwarded to everyone. I am not in any way promoting this website or any other website. Vanessa ----- Original Message ----- Subj: Genealogy scam Date: 09/03/2000 6:30:57 AM Mountain Daylight Time From: plfleming@shelbynet.net (Phyllis Fleming) I received this message after it was forwarded to the INGENWEB state coordinator: About 2 weeeks ago we received a complaint from an Archives submitter that her materials were found on a genealogy subscription service: www.familydiscovery.com The submitter was able to do a little digging and found that they were linking to her files housed on her server, but shrink-wrapped inside a frame so it appears to be THEIR work. About 10 days ago, to investigate this, I signed up with familydiscovery. To date, I have not received a user id or password to get inside. The registered owners of the web site gave bogus telephone numbers in their registration. One number goes to a recorded message line; the other to a carpet company. Some of the e-mail adds on their web site bounce. Standing on the outside and looking through the window, it appears that several folks' web sites have been prize-mined: http://www.familydiscovery.com/whatsnew.htm The Storey Co., IA and the Washington Co., PA stuff seem to come from USGenWeb sites. Some of the other IA and NC stuff seems to come from non-USGW sites. None of the materials seem to be housed at either rootsweb or usgennet. If anyone out there is or has been a member of familydiscovery -- or has been ripped off by them, I ["Joy Fisher" jfisher@ucla.edu>] would like to hear from you. Greetings, everyone. Twice a year, I post a roll call on all of my lists. The purpose of the roll call is so that you can post the surnames/localities you are researching and to get better acquainted with other researchers. Please respond to the Roll Call with "ROLL CALL" and the surname/localities you are researching in your subject line, and include information in the body of your message, including your web address if you have a research homepage. Greetings, listers: I just wanted to take a moment to remind you that, if you are planning on going on vacation for more than a week (as most of the lists I manage are only medium traffic), you may wish to unsubscribe to the list and then resubscribe after you return from vacation. To unsubscribe, send a message with only the word "unsubscribe" (without the quotes) to (listnamehere)-l-request@rootsweb.com
Please disregard this test. I am trying to make sure that all the bells and whistles of a new email program work. Vince
Greetings, listers. I am sending this to all of the lists that I manage/operate through Rootsweb. I found one like it in a geneological newsletter several years ago and misplaced it. It was recently posted on another list I subscribe to, and I am forwarding it on to all of you. Sometimes, if you can look through your family tree and note that a lot of people (especially children and the elderly) died in the same year within a short time of each other, and the year is lisded as one for an epidemic, they may have died from the epidemic. Greetings, listers: I recently created new websites for all of the surname lists I manage. They are: PEKAR-L: http://www.geocities.com/pekarlist BURKHISER-L: http://www.geocities.com/burkhiserlist KAMINSKI-L: http://www.geocities.com/kaminskilist LEIBOWITZ-L: http://www.geocities.com/leibowitzlist.htm DYKOWSKI-L: http://www.geocities.com/dykowskilist.htm Though, at present, the only active links on these sites are for outside sites, I will be adding links to the appropriate surname boards I manage at Rootsweb soon. Family information submissions are also being accepted. If you have suggustions, please contact me. Vince Leibowittz vpltz@peoplescom.net
My appologies, everyone. This came through earlier before my address change was processed and it indicated it was not from a subscriber. Now that the change is complete, it should go through OK. Greetings, members of Kamknski-L, Pekar-L, Kupcak-L, Burkhiser-l, Schiable-l, tx-czech-l, tx-polish-l, txhunt-l, leibowitz-l, and dykowski-l: I just wanted to let you all know that I have changed my email address from vpltz@lakecountry.net to vpltz@peoplescom.net. The change is effective Saturday, April 1, 2000. I will still maintain my lakecountry account for a while, however. THIS MAKES NO CHANGES TO HOW YOU SEND MAIL TO YOUR RESPECTIVE LISTS, ONLY IN HOW TO CONTACT ME IF YOU NEED TO!! To all Hunt County listers, it makes no change to the website, except that I will be putting the new address on it soon. Thanks a lot.
