New Manager Askin & Marine Credit Clothing Store. The question which has been asked daily for the past week "Who is Hartenstein?" has been answered by Hartenstein himself, who states with an air of one who knows, that he is the new manager of the Askin & Marine credit clothing store at 213 South Michigan street. He comes from New Haven, Conn., and claims the distinction of being organizer of the first store doing business on the dollar-a-week payment plan, the first one having been established in New Haven 19 years ago. He is placing a new stock here, reorganizing the store and its system and bringing everything up-to-date, much to the advantage of the buyer, who is now given the advantage of a charge account rather than a credit system, in the common acceptance of the term. Mr. Hartenstein states that he is a member of several live organizations and besides being a hustler is backed by a wide experience in his line, which he proposes to use to the advantage of both his firm and the buying public. ==================== FROM THE MESSAGE BOARDS Surnames That Might Be of Interest Board : Boards > Surnames > Keener Subject : Reason Keener & Clarinda Reese Author : CctKy Date : 19 Jan 2007 3:05 PM GMT http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/XSm.2ACIB/454 Board : Boards > Surnames > Eiler Subject : Re: Eiler, Eilar, Iler & associated families genealogy book Author : CoettaT Date : 22 Jan 2007 11:24 PM GMT http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/4gU.2ACIB/28.3.2.1.1.1.1.1 ==================== You are receiving this newsletter because you have expressed an interest in the Berkheisers and their history. As we woke up this morning to get ready for church or whatever your day's activities included; we looked out our bedroom windows around 7 AM and saw a dark, gloomy thick layer of fog enveloping everything around us. The temperatures this morning almost felt winter-like, too. Our thermometer at the "Weather Command Center"--hey, if the Doppler Boys can have their fancy shmancy names, so can I--it actually read 32 dgrees. A rarity this winter. There was even a heavy frost all over everything. By the time we left for church, the fog had lifted and it was smooth sailing down the road. Here's the road report from the Weather Mystery Machine. Its a red 1993 van that's weathered many stoms and its a mystery that it still runs. The road report showed the roads in great condition (potholes excluded) with some dampness and no slippery spots around 8:30 AM. Aronund Noon, road conditions were dry. The Doppler Boys can rest easy today. My good friend, George, had an interesting theory to all of this goofy weather and it agrees somewhat with what I think. George was saying we see our weather in cycles every 30 years or so. At least that's what they think in California. Now I'm not much for the "Left Coast" thinking but this idea made some sense. If you look at our own Northern Indiana weather, you can almost trace the current warm up back to 1979. Do all of you remember that year? That was the year we had the unusually warm Christmas Day of almost 70 degrees. We can all remember going outside to play Touch Football or just enjoying the outdoors, period. No White Christmas that year. It almost felt hot outside. If I recall correctly, we shattered an old record high that year for Dec. 25. The last weather cycle began in 1949 which was the cold and snowy winter cycle. This period wass filled with big blizzards and cold snaps that became legendary. These include the back-to-back blizzards of 1976-1978. All of these occurred towards the end of January. In all three of these storms, our snow was measured in FEET and not INCHES. The TV weathernen of the day even had trouble getting to work in those stoms. If I recall correctly, Dick Addis was stranded at the station during one of the storms and he did the newscast that day singlehandedly. The South Bend newspaper even shutdown because they couldn't get enough people in to print the paper, let alone deliver it that night. Now THOSE WERE REAL WINTERS. The year 1979 began a new 30 year cycle which is currently beginning its 26th year. If trends continue, the Winter of 2006-07 will be among the warmest on record for Northern Indiana. Do we have four more years of mild winters ahead of us before the next 30 year cycle? We shall soon find out. Stayed tuned.... Today's Weather Forecast. My left knee is telling me that the rain we're having right now might turn to snow later on. The current temp is 38 degrees with a stiff breeze from the East. Today's Weather Word is FOGFROSTY. When will it end? I have no clue. I'm not a meteorologist nor do I play one on TV. :-) There aren't many professions out there where you can be wrong all the time and still keep your jobs. And get paid good money for doing it! How many of you are getting tired of the Doppler Boys on your local TV and radio stations? Don't all of you raise your hands at once. :-) We'll be reporting some of the idiocy that passes for weather forecasting in this section. I long for the days when Dick Addis did the weather with his dry erase weather maps and black markers. Now that was when weather forecasting was fun! Today, we have computer generated data that will tell you that it will sprinkle on your forehead on the corner of Main and Broadway before the 6 o'clock news and the TV Stom Team will be there live to broadcast it. Sheesh! Its time for some good ol' fashioned weather common sense that doesn't come from a computer generated model or some pretty radar image showing you the latest ground clutter. You won't see any of that here. No eight to ten day forecasts. Nope. Not here either. The Doppler Boys can't even predict what's going to happen in 24 hours let alone what's going to happen a week in advance. And they expect us to believe they can predict Global Warming? But I digress. My main focus in this section will be the weather conditions (or lack thereof) of the South Bend area. The only weather equipment I'll be using is my barometer and my arthritis. Today was another mild one. That's it. What else did you want me to say? It feels like November out there? If you're planning your next snowmobile trip, you might want to look at Alaska. That maybe the only place this winter where you'll be able to find any significant snow. Oh yeah. I forgot. You can always go to Denver, Colorado where they have more than their fair share of snow this winter. ==================== MISSING LINKS >From Rick Berkheiser This week's MISSING LINK is Annie M. Iron clad secrecy in connection with the meetings of the committee of the whole of the common council may be a thing of the past within the next several weeks. Indications are the council will be asked at its next meeting to suspend the rule, whereby the newspapers and public alike are denied the proceedings of the committee sessions. Councilmen themselves are divided on the question, and the abandonment of the policy may result. Solons favoring the abolishment of the scheme argue the taxpayers are kept informed on the doings of the council and the committee and are able to attend meetings when matters of interest are scheduled. In spite of the desire for secrecy in connection with last night's meeting, word of the council committee's action was made known to-day. Probably the most important matter up for discussion was the proposed investigation of the alleged excessive gas rate in South Bend. City Attorney Iden S. Romig, who is in charge of the probe, met with the committee to discuss the matter. A proposition of the city park board to lease land for an extension of Howard park was also discussed. Considerable opposition was offered by members of the council to the plan. A communication from Rabbi Abraham Cronbach, of Temple Beth-El, asking for the establishment of a municipal lodging house in the city was considered. The matter will be taken up again by the council Monday night. ==================== BERKHEISER VARIATIONS Geri Brennan [Geri is a regular contributor to many PA Mailing Lists at Rootsweb. By 7 p.m., more than 3,000 fans were gathered to take a musical trip back in time with songs like "This Diamond Ring" and "Temptation Eyes." "Attendance was great," said Craig R. Morgan, fair spokesman. "We are drawing many people from outside the area." More than 30,000 people attended the fair, about the same number as last year, he said. The biggest turnout was Friday when 7,742 people passed through the gates. "I feel kind of happy and sad at the same time," Morgan said regarding the fair's closing Saturday. "This is a celebration of our agricultural heritage. We couldn't have had greater weather for the fair, but I feel sad because our farmers are hurting big time." Besides the agricultural aspects of the fair, big-name musical acts helped draw the crowds throughout the week, with 800 attending Tuesday's concert by country sensation Chad Brock, 2,000 turning out Thursday for The Drifters and 3,500 coming Friday to see Confederate Railroad. Gary Lewis and The Playboys also had its share of fans. While none of the original Playboys remain, the talents of Richie Spina, on keyboard, Billy Sullivan, guitar, Darren Frate, bass, and Mike Hudack, drums, complimented Lewis' vocals. Lewis had seven number one hits in the 1960s - including "This Diamond Ring" in 1964 - and appeared on the "Ed Sullivan Show" five times. With vocals from Spina and Sullivan, the audience grooved to other early rock 'n' roll standards, such as the Grass Roots hit from 1968, "Temptation Eyes" and a medley of six Beatles' tunes. With toes tapping and hands clapping, the audience sang along. "This music brings back memories for me of being a newlywed. I remember singing along with the radio when my daughter was just a baby," said Terry Manley, Pine Grove. Manley and many other women took the opportunity to take photos of the former teen-age heartthrob. Kathy A. Arner, Tamaqua, probably snapped an entire roll of photos. "I want to remember this forever," she said. "This is the music I grew up with and it's all I still listen to." At the end of the set, Lewis was greeted at the side of the stage by fans asking for his autograph, photos or even a kiss on the cheek. Some people held fair programs for Lewis to sign, but others came with their 30-year-old Gary Lewis and the Playboys albums. Lewis pronounced the '60s as "a wonderful time for rock 'n' roll music." Those who had the opportunity to hear one of the two concerts he gave Saturday agreed. Saturday was not only the final day of the fair, but it was also Family Day. The old and the young were on hand to see the exhibits, ride the rides, eat the goodies and help celebrate. Gary D. Wert Jr., 6, of Wernersville, enjoyed riding the race cars and petting the animals. "The goats were the friendliest," he said. Megan M. Kaiser, 4, of Lincoln Park, N.J., liked the Ferris wheel the best. She was visiting her grandparents, Richard and Pat Kaiser, who stay at a local campground over the summer. Her father, Richard P. Kaiser said, "We try to come for the Fair every year. It's such a nice fair. You don't have to worry about a bunch of tickets for everybody. They can ride as much as they want." According to Morgan, the $6 admission, which included rides and entertainment was new this year, but will remain in effect in the future. "People seemed pleased with it," he said. "Where else can you ride all the rides, enjoy entertainment, like Gary Lewis and the Playboys, and see exhibits all for one low cost?" Ruth A. Benner, Hometown, was in the 4-H Club when she was growing up on an Indiana farm. She recalled raising and showing calves at the local county fair. "We always come to the fair. We usually hit the food booths first and then take in the exhibits. It's just a lovely time," she said. Carole A. Artim, Lenhartsville, and Elaine L. Kennedy, Friedensburg, helped put on the dog obedience and agility demonstrations and showcase Saturday afternoon. "This year we featured the hound group," Kennedy said, as she petted her champion smooth-coated collie, Sarah. "I try to feature different dogs each year to give people the chance to see breeds they might consider when purchasing a new pet. We come to the fair to educate people about different breeds, and give the dogs the opportunity to perform. They love it and the people do, too." Shirley T. Lodato, Gilberton, who had left a wedding early to get to the fair, bought a chance to win a queen-size quilt made by the Schuylkill County Quilter's Guild just moments before the drawing and walked away with the grand prize. "I told my husband this morning I was going to win it," she said. Morgan praised the volunteers who donated their time to the fair. The association's hard work and dedication paid off this year with good crowds all week, he said. "The nice weather and good entertainment played a role in drawing the crowds," said Harold W. Berkheiser, Schuylkill Haven, who runs a scale model exhibit just inside the gates. "It's a good turnout. We've had many people through here," said Gary L. Slutter, waterways conservation officer for the Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission, which had an information exhibit at the fair. Plans are already under way for the 17th Annual Schuylkill County Fair in 2000. The Schuylkill County Fair Association, which is always looking for more volunteers, meets the third Thursday of every month at 7:30 p.m. in the summer at the fairgrounds and in the winter at the Friedensburg Fire Company. ==================== MISSING LINKS >From Rick Berkheiser This week's MISSING LINK is William A.
