Burkhiser. I am 99% sure that she was the daughter of Adam W. Fox, 1839-1896 and Sarah Jane Owens, both buried in Livingston Cemetery in Appanoose County. Adamn Fox was the son of Elias Fox, who established the large Fox family in Appanoose. Elias was married to Elizabeth Moss. Herb Arkin has recorded Elizabeth's lineage in his huge site about the Wright family which in various lines settled in southern Iowa and Appanoose County. Hi everyone! Robert "Rick" Berkheiser came across this article in one of his searches. BERKHEISER, who is engaged in business at Trevorton as hotel owner and proprietor of the Pleasant View Poultry Yards, was born at that place Oct. 16, 1860, son of Isaac Berkheiser. As Isaac Berkheiser died when his children were young, Daniel being a boy of ten at the time, little is known of the early history of the family, except that it is of German origin. Isaac Berkheiser was one of the early settlers at Trevorton, and was a miner by occupation. He met his death when fifty years old in 1870, during the time of the W. B. A., at the hands of the Mollie Maguires, being shot while sitting up at night with a sick friend. The first shot fired struck the window sill, but the second hit Mr. Berkheiser in the head and killed him. He is buried at Augustaville. Mr. Berkheiser was a soldier during the Civil war. His wife, Elizabeth (Haupt), daughter of George Haupt of Irish Valley, Northumberland county, survived him many years, dying in 1900 at Trevorton, where she is buried, in Greenwood cemetery. They had children as follows: Josephine, who was drowned in a spring when a child; George, who lives at Freeburg, Snyder Co., Pa.; Elizabeth, deceased, who was the wife of Albert Brosious; Daniel N.; Alice, wife of Frank K. Getche; and William, of Pittsburg, Pa., who is yard foreman in the employ of the Pennsylvania Railroad Company. Daniel N. Berkheiser received his education in the public schools. When a boy he began picking slate at the North Franklin colliery, and subsequently, in turn, was employed at door tending and driving, loading cars and mining, remaining at the same colliery for a period of about twenty years, from the age of ten until he was thirty. Since then he has been in business on his own account. For about fifteen years after giving up mining he had a store, dealing in groceries, fish, oysters, etc. and enjoyed a profitable trade. For five years he conducted the "Central Hotel" at Trevorton, selling it in June, 1907. In 1908 he put up a fine, substantial, four-story building at Trevorton for hotel purposes, containing twenty-one rooms with modern improvements and conveniences. Mr. END OF PAGE 621 Berkheiser is also interested in the poultry business as proprietor of the Pleasant View Poultry Yards, breeding the single comb Rhode Island reds, and has met with considerable success in this line, as he has in his various ventures. He is a stockholder in the First National Bank of Trevorton, and by his industry and excellent management has become one of the substantial residents of that place, where he is highly respected for his integrity and honorable life. Politically he is a Republican, and in 1908 he was elected a member of the board of school directors of Zerbe township. I've just sent the latest update of the family database to Worldconnect a few moments ago. http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=berkheiser The changes and additions included are updates to Leroy Warren Berkheiser, and the Berghaeuser database has been added. Jeffrey Berkheiser, our resident Swiss Resident, took a trip to Germany in 2000 and was able to do some research on the Berkheiser Family origins. He's had his copy up on Worldconnect for several years now, and I've just completed adding the information to our main database. Working from some handwritten notes Jeff sent me several years ago, I took his information a step further. Based on Jeff's guestimations, I connected a couple of the Berghaeusers to our direct lineage to Wilhelm Berkheiser, our immigrant ancestor. This makes for a very compelling family tree once you view it in its entirety. Special thanks goes out to Cousin Jeff for bringing this important information to light! Hope everyone has a happy and safe Thanksgiving! :-) Rick B -------------------- Berkheiser, Leroy Warren View/Sign Guest Book Leroy Warren Berkheiser, 92, a resident of Shell Point Village, Fort Myers, Fla., went home to be with the Lord Jesus Christ on Oct. 16, 2007. Leroy moved to Sarasota, Fla., in 1977 and then to Shell Point Village in 1991. Born Dec. 30, 1914, in Orwigsburg, he was a son of the late Ammon and Edna Berkheiser. At the age of 2, Leroy moved to Philadelphia and later graduated from Temple University. He was the buyer of building materials for Lumberman Merchandising Corp., Wayne. He also taught typing in the Philadelphia evening schools for 25 years. Leroy was never married. Leroy retained a keen interest in foreign missions and sought out the fellowship of Christian believers on his many world cruises. He had been in fellowship at Fellowship Bible Chapel, Cape Coral, Fla., and always had a cheerful disposition and wanted everyone to know that he had placed his faith in the Lord Jesus Christ as his personal Savior. Graveside services and burial will be Wednesday at 10 a.m. in Salem Evangelical Cemetery, Orwigsburg. Memorials may be sent to ECS Ministries, P.O. Box 1028, Dubuque, IA 52004. Hi everyone! Fall is finally in full swing in Northcentral Indiana with the leaves slowly coming off the trees. Some of the trees are still surprisingly green. Looks like the rakes and leaf blowers are coming out of the shed this week, but our trusty rusty 25 year old Simplicity riding lawnmower is still in the shop for repairs. Sigh. Nothing new to report this week except I finished up going through the SSDI listing for all of the Berkheisers I could find including some other people I didn't have dates for. I hope to have another newspaper article from Robert "Rick" Berkheiser for all of you to read next week. Its an interesting one!
