Many of the Burkeys I have seen from the Johnstown area have been from the Amish Mennonite families of Berks and nearby Counties. Many of them spelled the name Berkey. You may want to look at the Amish Genealogies. I copied a few pages in my research before deciding my line was from elsewhere. I found it at the DAR Library in Washington, DC. There are a few named Peter. The most likely (from the portion I have in file) is Peter (BK21428) b. ca 1851. He marrried twice - no spouses named. He was the 8th child of Peter Berkey (BK2142) and Sarah "Sallie" Wolford. BK2142 was b. 1795 m. ca 1805 and d. 1862. He was known as "Big Peter" and "Young Peter". No places are mentioned. There is another Peter in these genealogies who was in Johnstown though. He is BK21415, b. 1822 and d. 4/16/1907. He m. Anna E. Porter. A footnote says that he was known as "Captain Peter" and was on "the first packet through Johnstown". He was the 5th of 9 children of John Berkey and Anna Berkebile. No children are given for him. A third possibility is Peter Berkey (BK214161) b. 4/28/1847and m. Lydia Stutsman b 1844 -d 1912. Many of these Berkeys were in Somerset Co. PA and later in IN (Jackson County). Another place to look is The Berkey Book by Ruth B. Reichley. I heard she published a second book but have not seen it. The NGS Library in Arlington, VA has a copy of Berkey Book. I hope this helps. Contact me directly, if you can't locate these genealogies and I will copy what I have for you. ...Jim

We have since found out that our Burkey's came from Bavaria to Illinois, and from there moved on to Nebraska. There is a book called the Burkey, Burky, Birky Book written by a Ruth Burkey (I'm not sure of the exact spelling) that apparently documents most of the Burkey families that came to the U.S. I don't have a copy of it, but have seen sections of it. Maybe someone on this board can direct you to a copy. Virginia

Altho he came from Johnstown originally, i know nothing of when or how he got to Muncie (Eaton actually). I suppose it is possible he might have lived in Jay county and be related to your folks. I would like to know. I guess a key would be whether there is any Dunker background in your family. I believe he (Peter) was in Muncie in 1870, as there is a marriage record at that time. He lived thereabouts until 1925, moved to California and died in Riverside or Long Beach in 1929. He was married to a woman named Arabella Thompson. Some of his sons were professional photographers. I can give you a few more details (not too much) if you see anything that rings a bell. Let me know.

I can trace back to four brothers that were born in various countries in Europe then immigrated to America by the mid 1800's, they are: John Burkey - b 1777 France Andrew Burcky - b 1780 Switzerland Christian Birkey - b about 1790 Germany Valentine Birky - b 1794 in France There were likely other siblings, but not sure. Valentine is my great-great-great-grandfather. I think he was born in France. He married Elizabeth Unzicker in Germany (Bavaria). He died Sept 12, 1860 in Tazewell County, Illinois. Immigrated about 1843 to America probably from Germany. In Illinois, his family was part of the Mennonite/Amish community. Can anyone help me with information on these four brothers?

I found her in a few of the census indexes and directories (1890, 1900, 1910) in Tamaqua, Schuylkill co., PA. After Martin WALBERT died, she married a William GILTNER. I never did find any of these folks when I walked the IOOF cemetery in Tamaqua. Anyone here descended from siblings of Verdila Elizabeth BURKEY?
