Posted on: Burk, Burke, Birk ~ Queries Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/surnames/bur/Burk/120 Surname: Burk, Grater, Wetherstine, McKale, Cunningham, Rauschenberg, Trainer, Buck, Mathieu ------------------------- Am looking for descendants of David and Charlotte Reiman Burk, who emigrated with at least one child from Germany to Philadelphia, c. 1850. Probably 8 children total: Louisa (born Germany 1849, d. Phila 1926 unmarried); Caroline (unmarried); William; Henry; Louis; Alfred E. (b. 1863/4); Wilhemina (1857-1947, married Pierre Mathieu); Charles David (1856-1916, married Louisa Grater). Charlotte and David originally buried in Mt. Vernon Cemetery but moved to family mausoleums at West Laurel Hill. Wilhemina and Pierre Mathieu had 5 children: Peter N., Elizabeth, Alfred, Susan and Helen. Helen (1895/6-1984) married William T. Buck and lived in Wyncote, PA. Charles David and Louisa Grater (1863-1927) married mid-1880's, had 4 children: Charles Alfred David (1887-1937 in Peru, never married); Edwin Henry (1886-1962, married 1st Louisa McKale [1893-1923], 2nd Elise Hepburn [1894-1978], had at least two children, Edwin Jr. and Janet); Frederic Grater (1891-1948, married Mary Cunningham McKale, three children: Anna Mary (1919-1923), Frederic Jr. (1920-1988, married Patricia Holbrook, no children), and John McKale (1924-1983, married Nancy Jane McKee, two children, Laura Mary and Frederic Grater III); and Edith Louisa (1892-19?, married Edwin Trainer). Many of family buried in variety of plots and mausoleums in West Laurel Hill Cemetery, Bala Cynwyd, PA. In 1890 city directory, Burk Bros. are shown with a variety of businesses. Burk Bros. butchers were well-known for their pork products. Brother Louis Burk was a well-known horticulturist. Brothers Alfred and Louis bought and ran the famed Garden Pier in Atlantic City, NJ (1912-1920's). Brothers Fred and Edwin owned gas stations in south Jersey in 1920's.
