The query by Jim Young reminded me that I had ancestors in Virginia who later settled in TN before it was a state and that I have some books that might refer to some Burkes. Sure enough there are some there. My ancestor's were Been/Bean but I am searching Burke for my grand children. These books don't give any more than the names and where they were but might help someone to know where to look for more information. In a family genealogy book WILLIAM BEAN PIONEER OF TENNESSEE by Jamie Ault Grady there is a reference to "VIRGINIA FRONTIERS'' by F. B. Kogley. "Only a few of the Early Adventurers appeared on the land records as early as 1742, but in determining the residence of the men enrolled in Capt. Robinson's Company of militia, we find all of them lives south of the James River, a part of the branches of the James, and the rest on the "Roan Oak". Some of the men apparently with their families, established claims to the land they had already selected very early but did not secure their grants until after 1746, some not until after 1750. Among those first men we find George Robinson, the Captain of the Company; William Bean, JAMES BURK, Stephen Renfro, Samuel and henry Brown, and others. (See Chalkley's Abstracts Vol. 2, pg. 509) On another page of the same book under MISCELLANEOUS RECORDS - Northumberland County Virginia is this record "James Burk (greatest Creditor) Adm. The Tory-infested country of north Carolina, between the Yadkin River and the Cape Fear, broke into turmoil. They raided and harassed Whig homes. One one occasion David "Scaldhead" Fanning captured the Court of Chatham County at Pittsboro, and later raided the Hillsborough Court where they captured Governor THOMAS BURKE and other prominent Whigs.
