Her father was JAMES BURKE born circa 1846 and her Mother was BRIDGET (MEEHAN) BURKE born circa 1861. JAMES BURKE’s father’s name was MICHAEL BURKE. He resided in NEWTOWN, CLOONFAD, County Roscommon. MARY ELLEN’s brothers were JOHN born circa 1883, THOMAS born circa 1884, JAMES born circa 1887, PATRICK born circa 1889 & MICHAEL born circa 1893. Her sisters were DELIA born circa 1891 and KATE born circa 1900. (All birth years are based on ages shown on the 1901 Irish Census.) Residing with them were their mother-in-law widow BRIDGET MEEHAN, age circa 80 years young in 1901. MARY ELLEN immigrated to USA, New York City (Ellis Island), via Queenstown, County Cork, Ireland on 20 Apr 1913 on the ship “CARMANIA.” She met her first husband, THOMAS JOSEPH MULDOWNEY born circa 1892, also from Kilkelly, County Mayo, on this ship. They settled in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. They were married from Jul 1913 to Feb 1931. MARY ELLEN changed her name to HELEN MULDOWNEY when she married THOMAS JOSEPH MULDOWNEY.
