My great grandparents were Michael Duffy and Johanna Burke. It appears that Michael Duffy (sometimes spelled Duff) was born in 1806 in an Irish county probably to the North of County Tipperary. Johanna may have been born in the townland of Forest in the civil parish of Templemore in County Tipperary in 1806. But she was more probably a servant at the Carden estate in Forest and born elsewhere. Michael Duffy and Johanna Burke were married on 17 January 1835 in the town of Templemore, which is in the Roman Catholic Parish of Templemore, in County Tipperary. They married only a few years after Michael's first wife, Anstice Larkin, died and left him with a son, John. Forest (Johanna Burke's home) is a very small townland within a mile or so from the large town of Templemore and the smaller townlands of Manna North, Manna South and Kiltillane. A bit further north are the small townlands of Borrisbeg, Klitilliha and Curraduff. My wife and I know the area well, having visited it twice. The Church where they were married is on Main Street in the town of Templemore and is now a music school. Witnesses to the wedding on 17 January 1835 were Michael Maher and Mary Byrne. Michael Duffy and Johanna Burke Duffy arrived at the Port of New York from Dublin in May of 1851 with their 3 children, Mary Anne, Thomas and Laurence Duffy. They eventually show up in Troy, NY around 1860 and settled there through most of the 19th century. Michael Duffy had a son John by his marriage to Anstice Larkin. John Duffy served in the CT Volunteers in the Civil War. Johanna Burke Duffy may have had a nephew named Burke who served with John Duffy. In Griffith's Valuation Survey (GVS), taken in Templemore around 1851, the following were found in the area of Forest, Templemore: William Burke Forest John Burke Mullane's Lane Manna South William Burke Barrack Street Manna South It is a high probability that the William Burke from Forest was either Johanna's father, brother, nephew or cousin. In GVS there were no Bourkes listed in Templemore Civil Parish. However, the surnames Burke and Bourke were used interchangeably throughout Tipperary. I am trying to find out more about the ancestors and siblings of Johanna Burke and the birthplaces of Michael Duffy and Johanna Burke. Gerry Duffy Palos Park, IL
