Rosalyn, I apologise for the delay in getting back to you, but I've had company for Thanksgiving, etc. And when you mentioned Upshur County, something rang a bell but I couldn't put my finger on it right away. Turns out the bell came from info on another line which I haven't researched much because I found a tree online which included the marriage of my great-grandparents. This is on my great-g'mothers family, surname Paul. Talk about coincidences - they're piling up, but there's not necessarily a connection. It's odd that my Paul family came to Upshur Co., a desc. joined the Cross family in Hunt Co, the Cross/Paul family joined the Burke family in Goliad Co, and Burkes wound up in Upshur Co. The Pauls (Archibald) came from Ireland before 1775 & settled in Fairfield Co, SC. His grandson, Archibald Y. took his family to Henry Co, GA abt. 1820-25, then to Leesburg, Upshur Co, TX in 1855. His g-g'daughter, Eula Mae Paul, married my g-g'father Ewing Smith Cross (widower w/5 children) in Greenville, Hunt Co, TX in Dec, 1894. They had children of their own, including Luidell Franklin, Thomas Guynn(sp?) and Dick Leo. Their firstborn, Dick Leo Cross, b. 10 Sept. 1895, married Mary Lea Burke in Goliad, TX on 27 Feb. 1915. (She was dau. of Robert E. Burke & Sue Dillard Word, I checked that.) My father was their first son and was born 26 Feb. 1916, in Houston, if memory serves me. Most of what I have on the Burkes is from "family stories" written up and displayed at the Cross family reunion this past Labor Day. (The closest thing I have to documentation on these 19th century Burkes are transcriptions of the 1850 Goliad census and the gravestone records from Goliad.) I don't have the "tree" yet from my cousin, and don't know how well documented it will be, anyway. According to these stories, James Austin Burke was born in Johnstown, NY, 28 Aug 1824, son of Prof. Peter Burke & Bridget Kelly, form County Mayo, Ireland. I have found him on the 1850 Goliad census, married to his first wife, who died in 1851. They had two daughters, Josephine L. & Abzenith. Of James Austin's sons: Ross E. was Ross Edwin, b. 1871, d. 1941, served in WW1, and is buried in Goliad (his son Ross E., Jr. is also there), Robert E., b. abt. 1870, was my g-gf, full name of Robert Emmit and died while looking for work in Alice, TX, of appendicits complications in 1901. Robert E's son, Robert Austin, is also there. So, I don't know what happened to the rest of the brothers - anything is possible. According to the cemetery transcribers, there are a large number of unmarked graves due to a cyclone in 1902 which killed over 300 people in Goliad. This is Oak Hill Cemetery, Goliad, Goliad Co, TX - I probably found it on Rootsweb. I didn't mean to write a book here, but once started, it's hard to know when to stop. If anything I have still looks promising to you, let me know.
