I know the prefixes to names - like O', de, etc - used in conjunction with place names, or family names, or even trades practiced, usually identified which person was being mentioned somehow. I don't know much about my Burke's yet - some cousins have more info they are supposed to send me - but I'm getting antsy waiting. I'm starting to look around a little on my own, armed with some notes I took at last year's family reunion - the first in many years, I'm pleased to say. Speaking of my notes, I just checked to refresh my memory about one ancestor I took notes on. I was going to mention him, having the belief in my puny brain he was a grandson of the Professor, only to realize he was the oldest son of the Professor! Their daughter, first-born, is now the only one I can't name. Peter & Bridget's oldest son, James Austin Burke, b. 28 Aug 1824, in Johnstown, NY, died 1892 in Goliad, Goliad Co. TX, and studied medicine in Louisiana. He moved to San Augustine, TX, in 1846, then to Goliad, TX, and when fighting with Mexico started, he joined a company of "Texians" formed under a Capt. Wheeler, and served as a soldier on the Texas frontier until 1849. In 1850, he was elected County Clerk of Goliad Co, and served in that position until the War Between the States, when he again volunteered as a private soldier. He joined Wood's Company A, 7th Texas Mounted Regiment, and participated in numerous engagements in Texas and New Mexico, until the end of the Civil War when he emerged a Captain. He must have been quite a fighter! James Austin return to "private life" to serve as Goliad Co. Sherriff two years, then was re-elected to his former County Clerk position, which he held for many years. He married first, Elizabeth Fulcrod, 1827-1851, and they had two daughters - Josephine and Alzenith. He married second, Joan E. Welch, 1845-1916, and they had eight sons - James A., Ross E., Robert E. (my g-gf), J. Gus, Shelby, William H., Thomas and John F. My great-grandparents: Robert Emmit Burke, b. (?), d. 1901, Alice, TX Sue Dillard Word, b. 1870, d. 1955, Goliad, TX And that is just about all I know about them. Is anyone connected to my Burke's?
