While investigating a problem for a BURKE-L list subscribe, I came across a peculiarity with the threaded archives for both the BURK and BURKE lists. It appears a post sent to the BURK list is not included in the BURKE threaded archives and vice versa. However, the messages appears to be crossed-posted in both the BURK-D and BURKE-D digests. Therefore, in the event anyone unsubscribes from either the BURK or BURKE list because of vacation, both threaded archive websites must be visited to review messages posted while on vacation: http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/BURK http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/BURKE I will more closely monitor both, BURK and BURKE lists, to insure RootsWeb hasn't changed any configurations thwarting my efforts to link both lists. If any changes are observed, I'll post them. Regards, Jim Young ==== BURK Mailing List ==== LDS Ancestral File, International Genealogical Index: http://familysearch.org/. Posting a message on the BURK list appears to be automatically posting to the BURKE list and appears to be working as intended. This post will test the reverse, a BURKE message automatically posting on the BURK list. A visit to the threaded archives, will demonstrate that the messages are not cross-posting to the threaded archives. http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/BURK http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/BURKE If you have recently viewed the threaded archive website, don't forget to "Refresh" the website to view the most recent additions to it. I wrote to a man who had some Burke picture to sell. They seemed to be very reasonable. I thought I would post this so anyone who was interested could write me and I would give them the email address. As I remember it the price was very reasonable....just a few dollars....maybe 10 for five pictures.. Here is the description he sent to me. Betty- I have 5 photos from a junk store in Berkely CA. Only one has a date on it (1928). I grouped them together because of the Burke family name on the back of some and facial resemblence on others. Two of the photos were taken years apart but share the same lap siding of the background house. The 1928 photo labled "Katherine Burke" shows a teenage girl standing with a cow located in a place or county possibly called "Cheian". I would estimate that this Katherine Burke was born between 1900 to 1910. She possibly had siblings named Raymond & Madeline. There is a childhood photo of a "John Burke". There is also a family group photo labeled "Burke family" of about the same time period. Two of the photos, taken around 1900, are of "grandmother Burke" and she appears to be 70 to 80 years of age. I have no other information. You may want to contact: Sheila ([email protected]) She has a Katherine Burke, originally from Ohio, and married to John Burke with sons Donald and Kenneth. -Michael Mikel M2Archive #1607 ==== BURK Mailing List ==== LDS Ancestral File, International Genealogical Index: http://familysearch.org/. Rosalyn, I apologise for the delay in getting back to you, but I've had company for Thanksgiving, etc. And when you mentioned Upshur County, something rang a bell but I couldn't put my finger on it right away. Turns out the bell came from info on another line which I haven't researched much because I found a tree online which included the marriage of my great-grandparents. This is on my great-g'mothers family, surname Paul. Talk about coincidences - they're piling up, but there's not necessarily a connection. It's odd that my Paul family came to Upshur Co., a desc. joined the Cross family in Hunt Co, the Cross/Paul family joined the Burke family in Goliad Co, and Burkes wound up in Upshur Co. The Pauls (Archibald) came from Ireland before 1775 & settled in Fairfield Co, SC. His grandson, Archibald Y. took his family to Henry Co, GA abt. 1820-25, then to Leesburg, Upshur Co, TX in 1855. His g-g'daughter, Eula Mae Paul, married my g-g'father Ewing Smith Cross (widower w/5 children) in Greenville, Hunt Co, TX in Dec, 1894. They had children of their own, including Luidell Franklin, Thomas Guynn(sp?) and Dick Leo. Their firstborn, Dick Leo Cross, b. 10 Sept. 1895, married Mary Lea Burke in Goliad, TX on 27 Feb. 1915. (She was dau. of Robert E. Burke & Sue Dillard Word, I checked that.) My father was their first son and was born 26 Feb. 1916, in Houston, if memory serves me. Most of what I have on the Burkes is from "family stories" written up and displayed at the Cross family reunion this past Labor Day. (The closest thing I have to documentation on these 19th century Burkes are transcriptions of the 1850 Goliad census and the gravestone records from Goliad.) I don't have the "tree" yet from my cousin, and don't know how well documented it will be, anyway. According to these stories, James Austin Burke was born in Johnstown, NY, 28 Aug 1824, son of Prof. Peter Burke & Bridget Kelly, form County Mayo, Ireland. I have found him on the 1850 Goliad census, married to his first wife, who died in 1851. They had two daughters, Josephine L. & Abzenith. Of James Austin's sons: Ross E. was Ross Edwin, b. 1871, d. 1941, served in WW1, and is buried in Goliad (his son Ross E., Jr. is also there), Robert E., b. abt. 1870, was my g-gf, full name of Robert Emmit and died while looking for work in Alice, TX, of appendicits complications in 1901. Robert E's son, Robert Austin, is also there. So, I don't know what happened to the rest of the brothers - anything is possible. According to the cemetery transcribers, there are a large number of unmarked graves due to a cyclone in 1902 which killed over 300 people in Goliad. This is Oak Hill Cemetery, Goliad, Goliad Co, TX - I probably found it on Rootsweb. I didn't mean to write a book here, but once started, it's hard to know when to stop. If anything I have still looks promising to you, let me know. The one that really catches my eye is William H. and the John F. because my great-grandfather was William Hugh Sobey and his mother was Christina A Burke and they had a son John F(ranklin) Sobey. Christina also had a brother named William but I have no middle initial for him yet. My mother vaguely remembers him coming to visit in Upshur County, Texas when she was a child. Christina also had a brother named Frank and a son named a grandson named Hugh Franklin. She thinks maybe her uncle William Burke was from Colorado. Christina A Burke's brothers were all born in Ohio. Hugh John L Duncan C Frank Robert Charlie Stuart [Christina and her husband ended up in Upshur County, Texas after a stint in SD]. -- Rosalyn Alsobrook [email protected] http://home.earthlink.net/~ralsobrook/
Hello Harold This information might be of no use at all to you, but I'll pass along what I know even though it is a stretch. There was a Piece Family who arrived North Carolina before the Revolution as indentured servants. Benjamin Franklin Pierce is the name that struck me, reading your message. His mother was a Franklin, I believe. He was born in the early 1800's in Sunbury, NC, served in the Civil War (South), and had a son named Franklin Pierce. A branch of the family emigrated to Texas after the Civil War, and little else is known about them. Their family used the mother's maiden name as the middle name of a son traditionally. Might not help you, but if you believe it might, the Nat'l Archived is where I cam across this information. There is also a web site for Sunbury NC which has genealogy connections to their records. To Harold Wilson, I got excited at first and thought I might have something - but it didn't turn out. My James Austin Burke lived in Texas from mid-1800's till his death in Goliad, Goliad Co, TX in 1892. He served well several military actions, including the Civil War, and also was County Clerk of Goliad for many years. He would have been too old to father your Frank, however he had eight sons with his second wife Joan E. Welch: James A., Ross E., Robert E., J. Gus, Shelby, William H., Thomas and John F. My grandmother was daughter of one of them, I'm guessing Robert E., because her brother's name was Robert A. I don't have enough details yet to know if one of his sons could have been Frank's father, but I'm expecting more information from my cousin, and I'll look to see what we have when I get it. Good luck, in the meantime, Pat Cross Davis Texas ==== BURK Mailing List ==== To unsubscribe from the BURK-L list (single message mode), send an email message to: [email protected] To unsubscribe from the BURKE-L list, send an email message to: [email protected] Enter only the following word: UNSUBSCRIBE in both the subject line and body of the message. =======================================================

A couple weeks ago I posted a query concerning the parents of Nancy Burke, born in Texas in 1875. After some more research I was able to find her parents, and now that I have some more info I was hoping I could find someone else with further info or research, or a similar interest. Jesse Burk was born in 1815 in Georgia. He was a farmer and his wife's name was Eliza born in Mississippi. They had three daughters, (as far as is known,) all born in Texas: Kathy W. born c. 1868 Emma E. born c. 1872 Nancy J. born 1875 According to the 1880 census Jesse was a farmer, and his wife was 20 years younger than hhe was. thanks! connie
I am looking for any information that I can find regarding Ernst Burk. The information that I do have is that he married a Mary Steinhausen and they were both from Germany. But they eventually moved and they had a least 1 son named George Burk, born in 1838 in Pennsylvania. ==== BURK Mailing List ==== Verify the subscription status for all your RootsWeb mailing lists; your list of subscriptions will be emailed to you. http://passwordcentral.rootsweb.com/ =======================================================
