Hello List, I too, am looking for information about an Edmund Burke. This one was born in 1839 and died in 1904 in New Paltz, Ulster County, New York. He married Margaret (Delia) Wager and had the following children: William Jesse born abt 1895 died 1963 Lewis born 1876 died 11/27/1920 Emma ( JohnYeaple) born abt 1874 Elizabeth (Louis TenHagen) born 1883 died 3/10/1935 Mary (DuBois) Martha (Smalley) born abt 1886 Anne (Frank Gardner) born abt 1888 George born abt 1891 Dora (John Miller) born abt 1885 Jennie (Emil Greenburg) born abt 1880 James Edmund also went by Edward. Here's the slightly romantic story of my ggg-g'parents Burke, written by a relative of mine. I don't know the basis of the facts quoted: "Professor Peter Burke was born about 1788 in County Mayo, Ireland. He was the third son of Sir Walter Burke, Earle of Mayo. The Burke family was known as O'Bourke in Ireland. He married Bridget Kelly against the wishes of his parents, who had intended for him to be a Catholic priest, and, on this account, he was disinherited. Peter's parents were very wealthy and of the aristocracy of Ireland. He is connected by consanguinity with the distinguished family DeBorgo, of France. It is said everyone in Ireland who is named Burk(e) or any of the other forms of the name is descended from DeBorgo. Teaching was his life's work, and he always did this wherever he resided. Peter and Bridget emigrated from County Mayo, Ireland, to Canada in about 1820. They lived in Montreal where their daughter was born, and then lived in New York where they had three sons. Later, they moved to Minden, Louisiana, and then about 1844 finally settled in Natchitoches, Louisiana. Peter Burke died July 2, 1881, on the same day the lamented President Garfield was assasinated. Peter was nearly 100 years old." I do know Peter is buried in the Oak Hill Cemetery, Goliad, Goliad, TX. I did find Peter and Bridget on the 1850 Natchitoches, LA, census: Peter age 62 M Schoolmaster born - Ireland Bridget age 54 F -- born - Ireland Peter age 21 M Trader born - NY Bost age 19 M Trader born - NY There was a daughter, oldest, born Montreal; and another son, born NY. I am researching Edmund Burke of Massachusetts. I believe he was born in the 1820's to Irish immigrants Edmund & Mary Burke. He became an orphan around the age of 10 and was adopted by Lewis Lombard of Truro, Cape Cod, Mass. He married Sally Pike of Truro in 1846. They had 3 girls. One one grew up to have a child: Clara Burke. Clara married Alexander Benton and they had a child Ruth Benton. Edmund & Clara settled in Somerville, Mass. Edmund was captain of the Barque Azor which later became Fredonia. He died in 1874 in Somerville and is buried at Woodlawn Cemetery in Everett, Mass. Is anyone researching this family?
