Someone recently wrote to the effect of: we connect.....email me privately and we can exchange information.... It seems to me that private exchanges of family history negate the whole purpose of being on a mail-list. And this list is inactive enough as it is, without taking good information off the list. Someone has lost an opportunity to maybe learn something new of the family for which they're searching. Perhaps even those engaged in private exchanges have lost out. The more people who see what info we have, the more possibility that there's someone who can add to the knowledge we already have. It works both ways. I am a direct descendant of Mary Harper BURKS who married Peter ALBAUGH. They migrated from Mercer County, KY to Sullivan County, Indiana and then on to Putnam County, Indiana. My Mary was born 1 November 1800. Her parents were Edmund BURKS and Elizabeth "Betsy" EVERLY / EBERLY. They had a son named James BURKS who was born about 1818. Instead of trying to "sort" all the BURKS, I'll just paste in an outline of this family.....some of the others had "James" but I don't have a Rebecca. That's because I don't have all the different lines completed yet.....bad about "entering" info into my tree! Let me know if you think this is the same family. Another researcher, Denell BURKS, also has an Allen BURKS in Putnam so maybe she would know of a Rebecca. Dear Bonner, It is possible that we have related Burkes. I don't know enough about them yet to say one or another. My first thought was that it wasn't possible, but then I checked the map, and maybe... Keep in mind that most of this is hearsay to me, told from records or stories my aunt had accumulated. She is now gone, and I don't know how accurate some of this is. All I "know" is that my ggg-gparents, Peter and Bridget Kelly Burke imigrated from Ireland to Montreal, Canada, about 1820, where they lived just 2 or 3 years and had one daughter. They then moved to Johnstown, NY, and lived there long enough to have 3 sons, approx. 1824 thru 1831. They soon moved to Louisiana - Minton, for a while, then settled in Natchitoches. Their first son, James Austin Burke, went to Texas in 1846, or 1848. There are conflicting dates - the story says "in 1846, at the age of 24", but his tombstone says he was born in 1824, so in that case, in 1846, he would have been only 22 - or he went in 1848 at age 24 - or the tombstone is wrong. The others in the family were in Natchitoches in 1850, including younger brothers Peter, age 21, and Bost, age 19, according to census transcription, which I have seen online - USGenWeb. Now what makes me hesitate is that 1) I don't know if Peter Burke had other family here that were in East Texas in the 1840's (what made them move from NY to LA?); and 2) James Austin Burke first spent about two years in San Augustine, TX, very near Lufkin. What made him choose San Augustine - could it be other family there? He fought in the USorTX-Mexico conflict before moving to Goliad, TX, about 1849-50. He spent the rest of his life in Goliad, except the time he also fought in the Civil War. Also, strangely, he was stationed at San Augustine a while during the fighting with Mexico, after living there. Here's something you may be able to find out - he was married first to an Elizabeth Fulcrod, b. 1827, early enough to have two daughters with her before she died in 1851. Could he have married her in the San Augustine area before moving to Goliad? His second wife was Joan Welch, b. 1845 & d. 1916, so it's unlikely they married until after the Civil War - and where were his little girls all that time? James Austin and Joan had eight sons (as told in family story), probably a girl who died young, and a stillborn or infant who died. I don't know where six of the sons went. I did find one buried in Goliad, and the story says my g-gf lived in Goliad, but died in Alice, TX, while there looking for work. If there was other family in East Texas, some may have gone there. I'll list their names, but they would not have been moving around probably until the late 1800's, as I don't think they could have been born before 1865. All birth & death dates listed are from the cemetery transcription except for Robert E. - and that's from the family story. James Austin Burke, b. 1824 d. 1892, Oak Hill Cem., Goliad, TX + Elizabeth Fulcrod (1), b. 1827 d. 1851, Oak Hill Cem., Goliad, TX i. Josephine ii. Do you have any genealogical info about William "Billy" Burke the Clown? What little I know comes from the 1949 autobiography of his daughter, actress Billie Burke. She said he was born in 1844 in Knox County Ohio, studied to be a chemist but ran off to join the circus. He served in the Civil War and was wounded. I have the information about his marriage, Billie's birth, and his subsequent travels and death. I'm really interested in his parents. There are a couple of family stories which may link my BURKE/BOURKE ancestors to his, although they sound a little apocryphal to me. Regarding the O' prefix to any irish name: As contrasted with the prefix Mc or Mac which meant "son of", the O' indicated a more general tribal (sept) affiliation. I've never encountered any evidence that the O' was adopted or dropped within generations, only that the O' was permanently dropped by many families at the instigation of the British overlords during the 18th and 19th centuries. BURKE is an Anglo-Norman name, the older forms being deBurca and deBurgo. (deBurgo was a relative of William the Conqueror.) I assume some families gaelicized the "de" to O' along the line. My great great grandmother was Margarett W. Burke, b. 1836 Ireland m. Jan. 1855 to William Jackson, also b. 1836 either KY or England. She died in (I think) 1907 in Henry County, KY. I believe she may have had a brother named Patrick who worked on the railroad in Trimble and Henry Counties, KY. I have no idea when she came to the US, where she married--whether it's in Ireland, England, or US--, nor the names of her parents. She had four children: William, Emma, Maggie, and Joseph. Joseph b. 1859 KY was the only one who survived to adulthood. He married first Mary A. Pecar (originally spelled Piquart) of Milton, Trimble, KY, in May, 1883; Mary died about 9 years later and he married Ella A. O'Donnell of Henry Co. in 1910. Joseph had two children by Mary Pecar: Katie and William Henry Jackson. William Henry Jackson was my grandfather. Joseph died August, 1922, and is buried in St. Louis Cemetery, Louisville, KY. Any help on finding more about Margarett W. Burke Jackson would be sooooo appreciated. Since Burke is such a common Irish name, and since I have no idea when she arrived in the US, I am at a brick wall with her. I am assuming the W. for her middle initial probably stand for Winifred, as that was a popular saint in Ireland. Margarett was intensely Catholic, by the way. She took in my grandfather when his mother Mary died. He ran away from home at 14 when he overheard her talking to the circuit priest, who was staying at their house, about his being enrolled in seminary and becoming a priest. He lied about his age and joined the Navy, instead! Thanks, Burke cousins. Diane in MO
