    3. I think you refer to Gonzales County, Texas. I'm from Texas and I've never heard of "Conzales" County so I decided to check it out and see where it was and it is not listed. Have you been to the GenWeb site for Gonzales? http://www.rootsweb.com/~txgonzal/ I'll bet that's where you need to look. As for the nickname, there was a band of outlaws named Gonzales in the 1800s and it could be that to be referred to as Gonzales was like being called "Outlaw". Or it could be reference to where he was born. There's a Gonzales in Gonzales County. -- Rosalyn Alsobrook Looking for Hugh Burke's family (wife: Christina Margaret Livingston) kids: Christina A. 1. [BURKE] Re: [BURK] Fw: Conzales CO. TX.
    2. Margrett, The county in Texas to which you're referring must be Gonzales, spelled with a 'g' (I used a small 'g', because there's not much difference between the capital letters!). Texas used to be a part of Mexico, and there are many Hispanic surnames for places in Texas. Gonzales is a very common Hispanic name. Gonzales County is in South Texas, east of San Antonio, and the county seat is the town, Gonzales, which is on the Guadalupe River. This area was settled by the people of Mexico. I ran a quick Rootsweb search on Gonzales Co, and found several BURKETTES, but only mention of any short form - BURK, BURKE, etc. In 1880, a notice was printed in the newspaper announcing that the Post Office was holding an undeliverable letter addressed to George BURK. I do have BURKES in Goliad Co, which is only one county away from Gonzales. My James Austin Burke moved to Texas in about 1846, served several hitches as a soldier, and settled in Goliad in the 1850's. But he was a first-generation citizen, son of Peter and Bridget Burke who left Ireland abt. 1820. They lived in Ontario, Canada, a couple of years, Johnstown, NY, about six years, then moved to Louisiana, where they stayed. James Austin did have two brothers living in LA in 1850, and 6 sons born in TX, after the Civil War, I assume, all of whom I know nothing yet about their lives. Afraid I'm not much help - but maybe knowing a little about Gonzales Co, TX, may help in the long run. I'm with you - it's difficult to imagine how your James Crawford Burks picked up that nickname, whether it came from a Gonzales, or not. I just thought - if he was your grandfather, he was living in a time when travel was more common than back in the previous century - did he go to another part of the country; or overseas in a war; perhaps fight in the Spanish-American War? And the nickname could have been recorded wrong - misspelled, or something. It might be something very logical, if you knew how they pronounced it. Well, good luck to you, Pat Cross Davis - Texas [email protected] from: Burke, Callis, Carrothers, Cross, Martin, Paul, Warren, Wolf, Word ==== BURK Mailing List ==== LDS Ancestral File, International Genealogical Index: http://familysearch.org/. Click on "Future Events" to see if they're coming to a city near you. Somewhere on the site, they mention that you can also organize an event in your city or mail in a sample. They draw blood and ask that you fill out a genealogy form for 4 generations (or at least what you know). So far, they've collected about 8,000 samples in the US and almost 7,000 samples outside of the US. 3. I don't know who was father to my Hugh Burke but he was supposedly born in Scotland (this was on my greatgrandmother's birth certificate but the info came from my grandfather who didn't keep up with such things. He messed up his own children's' birth certificates by not being sure what their names were, which was not discovered until they decided to apply for SS numbers in their middle adulthoods) He was born about 1830 (calculated by when he was married and started having children). This 1830 year born Hugh Burke probably had siblings but I have no clues yet as to who they might be. He married Christina Margaret Livingston(e) in Scioto County, Ohio and lived there awhile before disappearing for a few decades, then he appears in East Texas in his old age, where he died. I don't know where he went from 1860 until the 1900s but his daughter went to the Dakotas with her husband, where she had my grandfather, then to Mississippi, then to Texas. He's being very elusive. He named children Christina A., Hugh, William, John L., Duncan C., Frank, Robert and Charlie Stuart. Hugh, John, and Duncan are also prominent in the Livingston(e) family so they may have filtered over from his wife's side. But so often back then, the first born son was named after the paternal grandfather if they were so prone to name children after relatives. janet ariciu wrote: > I have Hugh b 1799 m'd Margaret Huffman in VA. 3. Greetings to all. My GGGfather was the Rev. Henry Anthony Burke (1798-1872), rural dean of Enniskillen, Co. Fermanagh. This family (Burke of Ballydugan, Co. Galway) is shown in Burke's Landed Gentry of Ireland, and some members of the family are listed in other printed sources, so I'm not exactly groping in the dark. But if there are any long-lost cousins out there I'd be delighted to compare notes. Hugh Casement
