    1. [BURKE] [BURK] ISHAM BURKS
    2. >From Dorman's "Virginia RevWar Pension Applications, Vol. 13, 1967. I have another RevWar Pension number. I will try to straighten this out when I get back to Archives. I believe the number below represents Elizabeth, the widow, but it is very confusing. BURKS, Isham (Elizabeth) W.9758 (I have extracted from 3+ pages that I have. PBP) In 1829, Isham Burks, aged 70 or 71, lived in Boone Co., MO as of June 1829. (This is close enough to the birth date given in the Calendar of Tennesse and Kings Mountain Papers, Vol. III, 1929 (Draper Manuscripts) that I previously put online. PBP) He gives his service as having enlisted for 18 mos. in 1779 or 1780 in VA in Capt. Adam Wallace's company in Col. Abraham Buford and L. Col. Haws regiment. Served until col. Buford's defeat at hanging rock, SC. Returned to VA and attached to troops of Col.William Davis. Discharged at time of enlistment expiration at Chesterfield Co., VA. (No mention of the service given in Drapers Manuscript PBP) In this application, there is enumerated just what he owned at the time including debts owed him. Occupation is coopering and turning and chair making. Family consists of wife Elizabeth, aged 65 or 66, and youngest child, James Payne Burks, aged 21, and grandau, Nancy Sexton, hired for him. 29 Aug. 1829, Isham Burks, Sr. declares he left Burksville, Cumberland Co., KY in March 1818 or 1819 with about thirty-one children and grandchildren. He ran out of money at Franklin Co., TN, stopped for a season. Then he and his children moved to Jackson's Purchase in the upper end of Alabama. About 1826, left Jackson Co. Alabama for Boone Co., MO. Charles Burks was oldest son. John Rowland declared Isham Burks married Elizabeth Burks abt 1778. 1841, Elizabeth declares she is the widow of Isham Burks and they were married in the spring of 1778. He died 22 Aug. 1839. Family record in the handwriting of Isham Burks: (Note: this info is abbreviated by me. PBP) Jane Gillliland, dau of James & Elizabeth Gilliland b. 1817 Sally gilliland, da of James & Elizabeth Gilliland b 1822. Ages of the children of Isham & Elizabeth Burks: Isham Burks son of John and Sarah, b. 1759 Elizabeth Rowland now Elizabeth Burks b. 1764 Charles Burks, son of J&E b 1780 Salley Burk b. 1782 Betsey Burk b 1780 Lidia Gilliland, dau of James & Elizabeth b. 1808, d 1809 James Gilliland b. 1774, d 1822 Elizabeth Gilliland d. 1822 Robert Rowland Burks b 1789, d 1791 Nancy Burks b 1791 Isham Burks Jr b 1794 John Burks b 1797 William Burks b 1800 Mahala burks b 1802 Wesley Burks b 1806 James Pane Burks b 1808 Grandchildren: Isham Burks Fletcher b 1809 Wilson Lee Fletcher b 1811 Sally Fletcher b 1813 John Burks was murdered by George Beauly 23 July 1822 and buried the 24. Sarah Simpson mother of John Rowland and Elizabeth Burks d 28 Jan 1829 aged between 80 and 90 yrs. Nancy Maho formerly Nancy Sexton d. Nov 1830, aged 22. 19 Nov 1830, youngest son and child of Rowland & Mahala Frost died. Isham Burks of Boone Co., Mo. private in the company of Capt Wallace in the regiment of Col Buford in the Virginia line for 18 months from 1780 to 1782 placed on the Missouri pension roll at $8 per month . Ctf 20914 was issued 12 Oct. 1829. Elizabeth Burks of Boone Co. MO, widow of Isham Burks who d. 22 aug. 1839, was placed on the MO pension roll at $60 per annum from 22 aug 1839. Certificate 3707 was issued 21 Apr. 1842. Question: How does the above service correspond to the service given in The Calendar of Tenn & Kings. Mountain Papers online previously? Question: KY GenRecords "Potts Family Notes" gives Susan Potts as mother of Elizabeth Rowland. The records of Isham Burks above give Elizabeth's mother as Sarah Simpson. ?? I will leave this for someone else to untangle but will look at the DAR record when I get to the DAR Library. On the back of a photo in Margaret Burke's possession was what looked like Aunt Selina Griffit But it could have supposed to have been Griffin or maybe the h was left off by accident. The penmanship was poor. I'm guessing the photo was in the 1860-1880s. Margaret Burke was mostly in Ohio until 1860, but I lost her after that. Her Bible and box of photos is in my uncle's possession. She was my great-great grandmother. I have found nothing to give me a clue as to who Selina is other than an Aunt much less who she married to become that name. -- Rosalyn Alsobrook [email protected] http://home.earthlink.net/~ralsobrook/

    2. Eunice Mitchell
    3. The query by Jim Young reminded me that I had ancestors in Virginia who later settled in TN before it was a state and that I have some books that might refer to some Burkes. Sure enough there are some there. My ancestor's were Been/Bean but I am searching Burke for my grand children. These books don't give any more than the names and where they were but might help someone to know where to look for more information. In a family genealogy book WILLIAM BEAN PIONEER OF TENNESSEE by Jamie Ault Grady there is a reference to "VIRGINIA FRONTIERS'' by F. B. Kogley. "Only a few of the Early Adventurers appeared on the land records as early as 1742, but in determining the residence of the men enrolled in Capt. Robinson's Company of militia, we find all of them lives south of the James River, a part of the branches of the James, and the rest on the "Roan Oak". Some of the men apparently with their families, established claims to the land they had already selected very early but did not secure their grants until after 1746, some not until after 1750. Among those first men we find George Robinson, the Captain of the Company; William Bean, JAMES BURK, Stephen Renfro, Samuel and henry Brown, and others. (See Chalkley's Abstracts Vol. 2, pg. 509) On another page of the same book under MISCELLANEOUS RECORDS - Northumberland County Virginia is this record "James Burk (greatest Creditor) Adm. Isaac Bean March 18,1746 Order Book No. 1 (171) pg. 26 Augusta Records ''THE OVERMOUNTAIN MEN" BY Pat Alderman. pg. 137 I'm putting this in my on words to make it brief. The Tory-infested country of north Carolina, between the Yadkin River and the Cape Fear, broke into turmoil. They raided and harassed Whig homes. One one occasion David "Scaldhead" Fanning captured the Court of Chatham County at Pittsboro, and later raided the Hillsborough Court where they captured Governor THOMAS BURKE and other prominent Whigs.
