Allan, thank you so much. So the John Burk that married Mary Cloud was the son of Benjamin Burk son of James Burk. John and Mary were married 11 Aug 1786 and my Samuel was born in Rowan Co., NC 1799/1800. Which just happens to be were the "disinherited son" James Burk's children were living at the time. My Samuel named his first son John. If Jane Cloud was the sister of Mary Cloud maybe their children married. This is worth a look anyway. Just have to find the children of John Burk and Mary Cloud. Before this over I am going to have data on every Burk that ever lived except the one I am looking for!! Hello, I would appreciate any help in confirming the ancestry of Catherine E. BURKE, who was born ca. 1825 in TN. She m. William COLEMAN on 30 March 1841 in Cumberland Co., NC. This family (with nine children) is enumerated in the 1870 U.S. census for Fayetteville, Cumberland Co., NC, p. 37 (p. 134). I have been unable to locate them in any subsequent census. Catherine BURKE had a sister, Martha B. BURKE, b. ca. 1829 in TN. Can anyone help with the parents/ancestry of Catherine and Martha BURKE? Thanks, Ted -- Ted Steele St. Louis, Mo. David, I have not researched in Jenkins Co. GA, but I will. I have researched in Rome Floyd Co and that is where I found some of my Burke ancestors. The first name that I know for sure is Bartlett Yancey Burke. I have a marriage to Sally Beal in 1827 N.C. . All the census records show Sarah Lindsay as his wife. He did marry again after Sarah died. The lady was Elizabeth... There is some speculation that there were father and son Bartlett Yancey Burke. Maybe but the time frame just does not work out too well. I have names of the children of Yancey and Sarah. They are: Marcus D dob 1834 (census); Francis Marion 1836; Benjamin Reese March 11, 1839 ( He is my grandpa's dad) John 1840; William 1844; James Lindsay March 24, 1850 ( There is a confusion about if his name is James or Julius. I suspect James Julius Lindsay Burke) ; Reeves 1852 ( There is a descendant living in Alabama who knows for sure about this one); Mary 1855; Yancey 1860; and Caroline not know. Some born GA and some born AL. This seems like a long time span, so some of these children may belong to Sally and some to Sarah. If you have any information , thoughts, or speculations, about this family please e-mail me. My e-mail off the list is rominegl@juno.com. You may use either address. Glenda Burke Romine
I was able to confirm that my g-grandmother Mary Burke was from Limerick, Ireland and obtained her parents name by getting on line to West Virginia and getting to their genealogy site. They have scanned death certificates into their site and I was able to print the certificate which had her parents names as well as where she was born. You might try that route if you know where your great grandfather died. My gg grandfather was James E. Burke. At least lived in Limerick in 1866 when my g grandmother Mary was born. -----Original Message----- From: burke-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:burke-bounces@rootsweb.com]On Behalf Of gc-gateway@rootsweb.com Sent: Friday, May 04, 2007 4:57 PM To: BURKE-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [BURKE] Thomas Burke Margaret McGlynn This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Howdy, Hae you researched Jenkins County, Georgia? There is quite a number of Burke's living there and they have been there for a couple of centuries. Do you have any names, birthdays etc. on your Burke that are traced to North Carolina? My folks are supposed to been in that area ca 1774. Oldest records I have found are in Russell County, VA. I am not related to the Georgia line as far as I know. I am a Burke. I have more questions than answers, but the first place that I have found my Burke family was in Lincoln Co. North Carolina. Some of the family went from there to KY and some to GA. I cannot find them in 1850 anywhere. Later my grandpa's family went to Alabama where he married and raised a family. When my grandpa was 11 his dad died and his mother took her rather large family to Miss. to be near her sister and family. The first Burke ancestor that I am sure of is Bartlett Yancey Burke. His son Benjamin is my grandpa's dad. I have some names of my grandpa's brothers, sisters, uncles and aunts. Contact me if you want to see if we have any Burke connection.
