I think merging the lists is probably a good idea. I have add absolutely no luck finding info on my Burke line. My grandfather was Edward Anthony Burke b. 1904 to John Francis Burke and Margaret Chisum. I know that both John and Margaret died before Edward marred in 1948. I believe that John's parents were Burke and Bass, but that's all I have. My grandfather was a miner in Bolivia and his uncle Milton Chisum was also. I had hoped that that would be a pretty significant distinction. Any help greatly appreciated. Kim Estrada
Hello, listers, I have little information about my gggrandfather, Michael Burke, b. 1823 in Ireland, and his brother Jerry. Their father was supposed to have owned a shoe store, and Michael was a miller in Virginia and later in Washington County, Md. The name of the mill was Worley's or Morley's. (The name comes from an old typed memoir with a smudged capital letter.) While Michael married and settled in Greencastle, Franklin Co., PA and then moved to Nebraska with his wife and children, Jerry remained in Maryland. I do not know his wife's name, but he had several children: Mollie, Jerome, and Helen are the only namees I know. Supposedly, one son did very well in real estate in Texas and California, and Burkeville, CA was supposedly named after him. Would love to connect with someone who knows about Michael and Jerry's ancestors. Barbara Archer
The response to link the BURKE and BURK lists has been overwhelming in support of linking the two list without one negative response so far. The responses are too numerous for me to acknowledge individually; therefore, please accept this as my gesture of appreciation for the support. As soon as RootsWeb's staff responds on the feasibility of linking the two list, I'll notify both lists. For those not familiar with accessing and searching archived messages, the Searchable Surname Archives for Rootsweb lists can be found at: http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl Enter: BURK or BURKE (not both) (neither are case sensitive) Hint: Use spouse's maiden name (if known) as search term or any other unusual name. ------------------------------------------- Find easy instructions for using RootsWeb's Search Engine for the Archives at: http://www.shelby.net/shelby/jr/robertsn/rwsearch.htm There is also a BURKS list and its archives can also be searched using the above procedures. This list is not manage by me. Please contact me regarding any questions. Happy Huntin" Jim Young

Have you looked for him in the US censuses? They list place of birth and for some years the parents' places of birth. Good idea! I've got actual spellings BOURKE and BURKE in my lines (all originally from Ireland), but find them misspelled in records in all the common ways (and a few uncommon ones). It seems like the right way to do things. My family had its name spelled Bourke in Ireland and Burke In the US. It will help to have them all together. ----- Original Message ----- From: Margie Phelps <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, April 16, 2000 11:57 AM Subject: Re: [BURKE] ADMIN: List Management > I think you are perfectly right.... I think you are perfectly right.... I also have many of the same different spellings and I think it would help us all to have one list for same name with different spellings Thank you!! mp [email protected] ----- Original Message ----- From: Jim Young <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, April 16, 2000 11:39 AM Subject: [BURKE] ADMIN: List Management > Since the RootsWeb Listmaster could not elicit a response from the previous > BURKE listowner, the BURKE list has been assigned to me for management. > > Currently, I manage both the BURK and BURKE lists on the RootsWeb server. > > Since BURK and BURKE are often used interchangeably in documents from one > to the next and possibly in the same document, I would like to propose > linking these to lists (if possible) whereby it will not be necessary to > subscribe to both lists to monitor queries. Since the RootsWeb Listmaster could not elicit a response from the previous BURKE listowner, the BURKE list has been assigned to me for management. Currently, I manage both the BURK and BURKE lists on the RootsWeb server. Since BURK and BURKE are often used interchangeably in documents from one to the next and possibly in the same document, I would like to propose linking these to lists (if possible) whereby it will not be necessary to subscribe to both lists to monitor queries. The BURK list has 296 subscribers and the BURKE list has 241 subscribes; perhaps, many of the subscribers are subscribed to both lists. My ancestors have been documented as BIRKS, BURKS, BURKES, BURK and BURKE; therefore, it seem logical to link the BURK and BURKE lists. Comments are welcome. Jim Young

Will the list admin please contact Andrew Billinghurst ([email protected]) so we know you are still maintaining this list. Thanks! List members, not to worry. Probably just an email problem. I am looking for information on my gr-gr-grandparents, William Horan and Mamy Burk/Burke of County Tipperary. I only know of their names from the death certificate of my great-grandfather, Patrick Horan. Patrick was born in 1853, so I'm guessing that William and Mamy would have been born @1830. William and Mamy never emigrated to America as did Patrick and one brother sometime around 1875 where he settled in Maryland. I would be very interested in hearing from anyone with possible connections to either William Horan or Mamy Burk/Burke. I am starting from scratch on both of them, although I do know that they were from County Tipperary. Thanks in advance for any help. Mike Kearney
