    1. [BURKE] [BURK] Marshalla/Marcella BURK
    2. Anne
    3. I am looking for Marshalla/Marcella Burk/Burck/Burke. She married Patrick SHAW, abt 1868, probably in New Jersey. They had two (so far known) children: Ann Elis(z)abeth SHAW, b. 21 Feb 1869, Newark, Essex, NJ John SHAW, b. 1870, Newark, Essex, NJ Ann Elis(z)abeth SHAW m. Artemus HATCH in Oneida, NY in 1886, and assumed the name of Lydia at the same time. 'Lydia' and Art(emus) moved to Kansas in 1886, presumably immediately after their marriage. Artemus and 'Lydia' had the following children: Artie (Artha, Artemesia?), female, b. Kansas, Sep 1886 Earl(e), male Lloyd, male Lula (Louie), female Leo, male John, male, b. Sylvia, Kansas Willie (William), male, b. Sylvia, Kansas This has been my most extreme brick wall for many years now. 'Lydia' managed to keep the secret of her past for over 100 years! Not even any of her children knew. With a lot of online help, I was able to find out 'Lydia's' birth name only about a week ago. Marshalla/Marcella Burk/Burck/Burke may have been of Indian descent, through her mother's line, but at this point, that is only a rumor. Thanks for any help, suggestions, or info! 1. [BURKE] [BURK] Mucho misc records --Burks Mercer/Casey Cos KY
    2. Happy Hunting. Think sharing misc info is a great idea. A blessed passover and Easter to all, Denell Burks ---------- The following is information for William Burks. The information reasons that William is the father of Allen James Burks Sr. Other likely sons are George, Willis & Levy. Elizabeth “Mary” as daughter. b 1768 George m Rhoda Emerson b 1770 Mary m Daniel Ross b 1771 Allen m Sarah Berry & Elizabeth Townsend b 1880 Willis m Mary Tempe b 1886 Levi m Sarah Pigg & Amy White 1810 Mercer Co census: Males 16 to 26 = Willis and Levey Males 26 to 45 = Roland, Allen, and George Males 45 and up= William and John (relative of William?) In the fall of 1997, Denell sent in a query to the Harrodsburg Histoical Society, for research on Allen James Burks, Sr. The following is their response: Harrodsburg Historical Society The Morgan Row Museum and Researh Center 220 South Chiles Street, P. O. Box 316 Harrodsburg, KY 40330 606-734-3985 Dear Mrs. Burks, We have done a tremendous amount of work on the Burks, Berrys and Townsends. We have not been able to find answers to many of your questions. We are enclosing material which will probably be of interest to you, even though there are no clear relationships shown. We are of the opinion that Allen Burks, Sr. and George Burks, Sr. and Levi of this area are brothers and that their father is William Burks who is shown in Lincoln Co householders in 1787 and later. There is an older William living next to Levy (Levi) in the 1810 census of Casey Co. He and his wife are listed as over 45 years of age. This would make him (Wm) a generation older than Allen Burks. We are not sure of the parentage of Sarah/Sally Berry. If Nancy Berry Martin gave consent as Sarah's guardian, this indicates that Nancy Berry Martin was her mother. This would suggest that Nancy was the widow Berry who married John Martin. We believe Allen J. Burks probably had a son Berry Burks because he appears with Allen Burks in the 1820 tax list of Mercer Co. We are sorry we can't show records that prove relationships. We wonder if something more definite could be found in Lincoln or Casey Co.? Baker and Isou, Researchers ----- The Harrodsburg Historical Society enclosed the following letter from their archives: "University of Baltimore 1420 north Charles Street Baltimore 1, Maryland March 28, 1963 Dear Sir: I wonder if I may enlist your assistance re some data possibly in your records. It is impossible for me to come to Mercer County myself. I. Does your index to wills on record have the will of a Mr. Townsend— 1800-1850?—who had a daughter Elizabeth Townsend Burks, wife of Allen Burks? If so, what would be the charge for getting a copy of the will (need not be certified)? Answer: No will. II. Allen Burks (may be also called James Allen Burks) moved from Mercer Co to Indiana after 1820 (perhaps about 1824?). He owned a great deal of land. Do you have any deeds of sale from him in this general time period that would indicate sale of his total [can't read a few words] all at one time or separately. Answer: No. III. Are there any deeds on record from Allen Burks in which his wife, Elizabeth, is mentioned or in which her dower rights are mentioned? Answer: No. IV. Are there any deeds or wills or records that would indicate the blood kinship or ancestry of George, John Peartree, Allen, Berry, Levi, John, Floyd, or Edmund Burks? I believe George to be Allen's brother and Berry, perhaps, Allen's son by his marriage with Sally Berry in 1790 (first marriage). Answer: No. V. Any Townsend deeds in early 1800's? No answer shown. I hope you can help me. It means so very much to me. I will be willing to pay your for your trouble in looking at index and documents. Sincerely yours, (Rev.) Daniel B. Remember me from the Burks family? Are you interested in land that fell in Ky? If so: I might first suggest that you write to Kandie Adkinson (a Harrodsburg girl who still lives here but works in Frankfort) Administrative Specialist Land Office of the Secretary of State Frankfort, Ky. Ask her for her article in Saddlebag Notes Vol 13, No 3, May/June 1990 "The Kentucky Land Grant System" Her article clearly explains the complicated Ky land grant system. All the land grants in the area that became Ky (even those granted by Va) are located in her office & under her domain. If you have the numbers on your specific grant just send a check made out to Sect'y of State & include the information from the grant and request a copy (you will get a photo-copy from the micro-film in just a few days. Hint: ask for all the papers - just in case there are some depositions ..just tell her you are interested in genealogy (she is one herself and author of at least on book on her family) & she will know what you want. I have both books on land grants in Ky..the grants under Va & the grants while still Va. & will be glad to send you any data out of these if I can help. 3. Listers, I recently found in the Bath County News-Outlook an article printed in April of 1910. I am going to send it out, since I have been two years trying to find a trace of my husband's gggrandparents. The grandmother is listed as Sarah Burk/Burke/Buck. This is the first clue I have had to the fact that there may have been a family of Burks in that area. This is for those who are interested in the Eastern Kentucky Burk/Burke/Buck family. April 14, 1910 Nesbitt Johnson, of Grange City, brought ot this office the following objects of interest: A copy of A. Pickett's Juvenile Spelling Book, published in Wheeling, WV, in 1827; a copy of Samuel Kirham's English Grammar, published in Cincinnati in 1841, and a grapeshot recomvered from a sunken boat at Burk's Island, in Licking River. It was cast ten years ago at the Slate Furnace ans was intended for use by General Andrew Jackson at New Orleans. The thing of interest to me is the fact that there is a Burk Island in the Licking River. Sarah Burk/Burke mother of Jerimiah Vanlandingham. ==== BURK Mailing List ==== Have a question, recommendation or comment about RootsWeb or this list, please direct same to the list moderator: Jim Young <[email protected]> Issues of general membership interest should be directed to the list: [email protected] =======================================================

    3. Good Morning, My name is John Luddy Burke, Jr. and I have been doing genealogy research for about 15 year now. I have been trying to connect my Burke/Bourke family to others. I do know all my first cousins. If there is a realationship it would come from this list. I also have a Web Site and I invite you to visit it. If anyone wants to send information on the Burke / Bourke family I would be happy to put it up on the Site. http://www.geocities.com/john_luddy_burke/ The first of my Bourke clan that I can verify is Morgan Bourke born about 1795 died in 1869 in Moanmore, Parish of Emly. Morgan married Sarah Mitchell in the Parish of Galbally, County Tipperary 25 Feb 1824. There witnesses were John Bourke and Timothy McGrath. Morgan is found in Tithe and Applotment book of 1833 and in Griffith's Valuation of 1851. In the Tithe Applotment Book of 1833 Morgan was leasing 3/4 of an acre of land. In Griffith's Valuation of 1851 Morgan leased a house, office and 48 and 3/4 acres of land. The land was in two seperate lots. He leased 15 1/4 acres from James Scully Esq. and 33 1/2 acres from Catherine Frazer. In both of these books he is living in Moanmore he is also listed in 1840 as leasing land in Ballynoe. Morgan is listed as one of the subscribers to the Daniel O?Connell Committee of 1833. Morgan is a widower on his civil death record in 1869 and his age is listed as 73. It must be assumed that Sara died prior to Morgan. Morgan and Sarah had twelve children: Edmond - Baptized 10 Nov 1824 Parish of Emly, Co. Tipperary. God parents were Edmond Bourke and Catherine Bourke. Edmond married Catherine Powers. I have found two of there children: Michael b.1864 in Emly Co. Tipperary John b. 1866 in Emly Co. 1. [BURKE] Submitting a Query
    2. Jim Young
    3. To make your query work harder for you... keep in mind the old rules of news reporting and include as many of the following as possible: SUBJECT FIELD: To get the most from your query and make your query command attention, place the FULL NAME, LOCATION, YEAR in the subject field. Remember ! ! ! ! Many subscribers belong to multiple mailing lists; therefore, many go through their mail looking at subject fields... only reading those that have descriptive subject names. Unfortunately, messages entitled "Question", "Help", "IMPORTANT!", "My Family", "My Line", "My Grandfather", etc., are deleted without ever being opened. WHO: State the names of people as completely as you can. WHAT: Try to limit your query to one or two specific questions or bits of information. Post other queries with additional questions rather than load all your questions into one query. In this way, each of your questions will stand out and get attention. WHEN: Dates are important, if you don't know the day, month and year try to put in a period (1790s, late 1800s etc.) WHERE: Mention the location of events (birth, marriage, death, etc.) in the body of the query. Include their migration path if you can. WHY: Why are you searching for this(these) individual(s)? Describe your connection to him/her. HOW: How your query appears will often get subscriber's attention. Check spelling, grammar and format. Apply the KISS system: Keep It Simple Simple. REPETITION: Once you have an acceptable looking query, save it and update it as necessary. Use it again about once a quarter to touch base with new members. Also, you may use it on web sites that accepts queries. REMEMBER: Your goal is to get information. A list server (discussion group), such as this, is an excellent forum for helping you get that information. Make your query work! By following these recommendations, your query stands a better chance of being read and you may make that great contact that you need. GOOD QUERIES CONNECT... Please note that BURKE queries are addressed to: [email protected] CAUTION... You may wish to consider withholding personal data on living descendants. Because, at the moment, once your message has been archived on RootsWeb, neither the data within nor the message can be removed from the archives. 1. [BURKE] List & Internet Stuff
    2. Jim Young
    3. Following are guidelines and resources for the BURKE list. Please! Please!! Please!!! PLEASE!!!! DO NOT send any virus alerts, missing children reports, chain letters, jokes, poems, recipes or etcetera to any Genealogy Discussion List. Cyndi created a webpage to aid fellow genealogists in understanding some of the mysteries of the Internet regarding misconceptions, rumors, virus hoaxes and other bits of misinformation floating about. Please visit the following website regarding "Internet Stuff You Need to Know". http://www.cyndislist.com/internet.htm There are real viruses and worms which are attached to newsgroup and e-mail messages as an attachment. You cannot get infected with these viruses and worms just by reading a newsgroup or e-mail message. You have to execute the attachment (double click on the attached file). Upon being executed into a computer, some destroy files and others send emails and newsgroup postings without a user's knowledge. To review the latest published information on real viruses, please visit the following website: http://www.antivirus.com/trendsetter/virus_report/ Rootsweb has developed a cluster of resource tools for researching surnames. 1. [BURKE] Thomas Burke
    2. Anita Henderson
    3. My g.g.grandfather Thomas Burke ( 1814-1884 ) was a shoemaker who lived in Church Lane, Galway City. His daughter Norah ( 1857-1931 ) was living in Abbeygate Street, Galway City in 1882, when she married Timothy McHugh at St. Nicholas R.C.Church,which was also in Abbeygate Street. The young couple then moved to Leeds in Yorkshire, England. Thomas died two years later in the hospital attached to the Union Workhouse, again in Galway City.Thomas left a widow, whose name I have not yet been able to discover.I should dearly like to know the name of his widow and the names of their other children, so that I can trace their descendants. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Anita
