    3. Hi folks, I've just recently updated my family tree webpages for my WARD,MAXSON,ENO,MORGAN and BURKE,KESSLER,VERMILLION family lines (and many more, of course). The web address for the home page is: <http://members.home.net/carlwward1/ward_genealogy.html> (NOTE: Between the word "ward" and "genealogy", there's an underscore character "_" Sometimes that's a little hard to see if you're re-typing that internet address.) I might add that on my home page you can find an index of all the names in my family tree (on the web pages) and a surname list as well. All family pages have links that you can click on to proceed to the children or parents (if known). My new email address is also on the home page. Would sure appreciate hearing from anyone that might find a connection. Thanks, Carl WARD ==== BURK Mailing List ==== REMINDER ! ! ! 1. [BURKE] [BURK] Harvey George Burks
    2. I'm looking for information relating to my paternal grandfather. Harvey George Burks. He's listed in the SSDI, where his birth year is given as 1898. (My father thinks he was about 5 years older though) Given the time frame that he was born in, you'd think that he was in WWI...but my father's under the impression that my grandfather never served. Supposedly, my great-grandmother was widowed w/several young children and my grandfather was either the oldest or close to the oldest. I have heard stories relating many states, including: Arkansas, Texas, Tenn., Kentucky, etc. I DO know that Harvey George Burks married Charlyn DeWitt (also listed in the SSDI) and they had 2 children...my father, Charles Norman (b. 1942) and my uncle, Lawrence Harlan (sp?) who's about 5 years older. The family moved around a lot...my uncle Larry was born in Winslow, AZ and my father was born in Weed, CA. During my father's childhood, the family generally lived in Northern California and in southern Oregon for a short while (lumber mill work, I believe). Additionally, Harvey George Burks worked on the contruction of Hoover Dam. On a different note, one story that I've heard consistently through the years relates to there being a female Indian marrying into the family a generation or 2 before my grandfather. ...something about this lady marrying a Texas Ranger Burks. I really don't know if the story is true or just something my dad concluded on his own based on my grandfather's looks: over 6 feet, reddish skin, prominent nose/cheekbones. I know I'm looking for a needle in a haystack here but HOPEFULLY there's a descendent of a sibling/cousin/whatever on this list that just might be able to help me! If anyone has come across *any* Harvey Burks (or any derivation thereof!), please contact me via e-mail [email protected] Thank you! Lynette A. 1. Re: [BURKE] William H. Burke b. abt 1845 Ulster county New York
    2. Charles Sullivan
    3. You can go to this site: http://www.civilwardata.com/pers_dir.html and enter William Burke, NY, and you'll get 50 hits. Unfortunately you have to subscribe to get more information on any of them. There are 3 William _H_ BURKEs in the list, but I wouldn't put too much faith in the Army recording the middle initial of any CW soldier, so your man may be one of the others shown without a middle initial. Your man (or a survivor) will hopefully have applied for a pension - that's about the only record which would contain enough personal information to enable you to match him with his family. The National Archive will search through only 5 files before giving up, so you may have to go to Washington and search yourself, or else hire a researcher to do so. If you know where he (or his widow) was living in 1890, you can try searching the 1890 Special Census of Union Veterans and their Widows. This will often list the regiment in which the soldier served. (Note: Most of this special census survived even though the regular 1890 census schedules are almost totally lost.) So far this has been a big brick wall for now for 5 years. Samuel Hamilton BURK was born in 1833 in OH. He moved to Iowa in 1859 just in time to make the state census in Hardin County. They lived in the town of Ackley, Iowa which covers two counties there. He married Elizabeth Jane HERMANN of IN. All their children are listed being born in Iowa on their census papers and death certificates.
