I have been researching my newly-discovered BURKE line in Sydney, Australia, for about four days and I've already found that my ggg-grandfather, Redmond BURKE, also spelled his surname (or had it spelled) Redmond BOURKE. I can think of numerous ways to spell it -- BERK(E), BIRK(E), BORK(E), BOURK(E), BURK(E) -- which leads to me to wonder: Are there other plausible variations? Which ones are most common? I am trying to find information about my Burke family. I have read several of the pieces about Ireland and feel sure that my relatives came from there. I have gotten as far back as my gggrandpa. His name was Bartlette Yancy Burke born 1810 in S. Carolina or Georgia. Married Sarah ?? in GA. I know about two sons. I won't bore you with the full details of how after three years I *finally* figured out that my great-great grandmother, Mary RIEHM, was born Mary BURKE and not Mary SULLIVAN. Suffice it to say that when I finally did, a few pieces of the old puzzle came together (ie, why I could find her next two sisters' birth records in the New South Wales BDM database, but not her own), but new ones arose. Mary A. BURKE was born in Sydney, NSW, Australia on March 21, 1844, to Redmond BURKE and Bridget WHELAN. In 1845 Bridget married James SULLIVAN. (One of the witnesses at their marriage was John BURKE. I don't know if he's any relation to Mary and Redmond.) They had two more daughters before emigrating to San Francisco, where they had three more daughters and a son. Mary may have married an actor named MOORE in the mid-1860s. She definitely married Mattias RIEHM in the late 1860s and had eight children: Edward R. (I), Grace (m. Albert DEZERATA), Edward R. (II), James, John (my great-grandfather, who married Cordelia DANDURAND LaFRANCE), Francis, Elizabeth (m. Zebina RAWSON) and Nellie. The first three were born in California (probably San Francisco); the last five in Virginia City, Nevada. She died Dec. 21, 1884, aged 40. I don't know where Redmond BURKE came from, if Bridget WHELAN was married to him, or what became of him afterwards. He is not listed in the convict records from Ireland. (Bridget WHELAN was a convict.) The only reference to Redmond BURKE in the NSW BDM database is as Mary's father. Anyone have a Redmond BURKE in Australia? My grandfather was JAMES BURKE, who served in the military in Dublin in the 1880's, according to his family. He married MARY JANE CORLETT, whose father was a seaman from the Isle of Man. They lived for a few years in Lower Campsie, outside of Londonderry, working for a Major Quinn. They emigrated from Londonderry in 1908 to Alberta, Canada. bringing their large family with them. My ggfather, Mathew Burke, died in Clinton Co Oh in 1875. My ggmother, Margaret Luddington (nee Thatcher) bore him 4 children Elliott B., Preston B., Minnie and Persilla, before he died. In the house hold, besides the above, were 3 children by Margaret"s first husband Milton Luddington, were Delila, Fenton and Symore. The Luddington children were cared for by relatives. Margaret took Minnie and Persilla and moved back to the home of her father, Thomas Thatcher of Cuba, Clinton co. Oh. This was noted in the 1880 census of Clinton Co.Ohio. Elliott and Preston, were noted as residents of the Ohio Reform School in Fairfield, County. Elliott was age 12, Preston was age 11. Can any one provide me a source for finding the reason for this internment? My gfather, Elliott, married my gmother Della Springer in Chicago Ill in 1892.
