    1. [BURKE] [BURK] James Burke of Burke's Garden
    2. Margrett McCorkle
    3. Most of (nearly all of my info come from: Burk(e) Family of Southwest Virginia and the Valley By Dr. John A. Kelly Haverford, PA. 1944 copied and corrected notes of the late Dr. John A. Kelly added by: Mrs. John W. Boswell, Regent Gen. James Breckinridge Chapter, NSDAR Roanoke, Virginia, 1973 (As you can see this was last updated in 1973, I'm sure lots of new info has been discovered.)As for were James was born, I have see it both way, in Ireland coming to America with his parents and then as being born in VA. I can not say which is correct. I lean toward the first as if John Burk (was ) the father of James. John having came to America ca. 1720-25, This son James would have been 10-15 years old. The First mention of James Burk(e) is in Va. records in 1742 when he was a member of Geo. Robinson's co. of Militia on the Roanoke. In 1746 he was administer of the estate of Issac Bane. and in May 1753 he sold 400 acres of land on Goose Creek. He married first Mary"Polly"Bane, and does state all his children was by his first wife Mary. he married Lucretia Rees, Griffith prior to 8-1751. In his will mentions his wife daughter Lucretia. In the Book "3500 Years of Burke's" it says James Burke had at least 10 children. If this is true they are not all accounted for. I don't know.As for an unknown daughter being a Rebecca this to could be. I don't know. In The Book "3500 Years of Burke" the son is called John Edward. John Edward later had a son called Edward. I believe there are one son by James Burke named John Edward Burke, then his son, named Edward. The book names these children ( but I can not say it is all truth) James JR.; Sarah (Wilson); Benjamin; Joseph ; Mary; unknown daughter (Brookshire); unknown daughter (Coleman); Naomi (Pepper) ; John Edward; and Thomas ; James JR. is the disinherited son. I can send you a copy of the will and will do so to you privatly. I am trying to take info from both sources and see what it adds up to. Dr. Kelly's notes and the book "3500 years of Burke" I'm sure there are erros in both, and some I can not prove. Sharing info is the only way we will wade through this, Margrett unknown daughter ==== BURK Mailing List ==== Have you posted your line or query lately? 1. [BURKE] [BURK] James Burke of Burke's Garden
    2. Ray & Mary Green
    3. Hi All, Margrett and Ken have recently published some fact filled messages here regarding the James Burke of Burke's Garden - Thank you! Of course now I have some questions. According to this info James was born in Goochland (Ken) or Orange (Ken and Margrett) County. But Goochland wasn't formed until 1728 and Orange wasn't formed until 1734 and James was born c1710. How is this reconciled? Would appreciate the sources for these birth locations. What I have had up to this point is Limerick, Ireland with an immigration (with his father) c1722. Admittedly I don't have a particularly good source for this info. Previously, I've had info that James had seven or eight children by Molly (but not all of their names) and no info on children with Lucretia. Also I have info that James' will mentions eight children (unfortunately I don't yet have a copy of the will to see for myself). Both Ken and Margrett say "at least 10". Ken says John and Edward are two sons - Margrett says one son is John Edward who mostly went by Edward. Is there a possibility that there is only one here who is John Edward? Again, any source info appreciated. I previously had two unnamed daughters - one married to William Brookshire and the other married to a Coleman - as well as Mary married to Joseph Murphy. Did Mary marry twice? Is the marriage to Joseph Murphy in error? Ken says there's a daughter Rebecca. Did she marry either Brookshire or Coleman? Any clarification of the foregoing would be much appreciated. My sources are primarily the work done by Dr Kelly plus that by Patricia Givens Johnson with other bits here and there. I'd be glad to share any details I have if anyone wants. Thanks for your help! Ray Green ==== BURK Mailing List ==== REMINDER ! ! ! 3. It seems some of you are a bit confused about the My Family.com web-site of the Burk's from Laurens Co. SC. There are other Burk/Burks/Burke My.Family web-site and this one (ours) just separates the many. The Line of Burks that most are connected with came from our (dead-ended) James Burk b.ca.1759 and Barbara (Barbary/Barberry)Briggs and their descendents, NOW: that does not mean we are not very actively researching, where our James came from and from who. Possibilities are: James Burke ca1710 VA. (The James Burke of Burke's Garden) and any of his Br's or son's. another possible is the Samuel Burks that marries Mary Davis VA.(descendent of Opechancanough the Powhatan Indian uncle of Pocahontas. and one of the four (possibly 3 brothers) that first appear in VA. in the mid 1740's ( William, Thomas, Charles, and James ???) I feel very STRONGLY that there is a connection between the James Burke and our James Burk ca.1759. and with one or all of the three or four brothers. The whole purpose is to try and figure it out.
