    1. [BURKE] Re: [BURK] James Burke of Burke's Garden
    2. Ray & Mary Green
    3. Hi All, After a bit of activity on this subject things have quieted down again. Lets see what I can do to stir it up again. First, I'd like to make the point that my interest is through James' brother William so I don't share the interest in trying to connect to the later James that some of you do. But I'll work on any lead which helps clarify the father of James and William. Re sources, I do have the work of Dr Kelly as corrected. That was my first find regarding this line and the Williams which connects to it. I see often references to David Johnson's "New River Valley" which I've looked at some time in the past and copied a few things but I've never seen anyone mention "The Irish Burks" by Patricia Givens Johnson. Have wondered why. Do some not consider it a good source or what? Also, I've always been curious about the relationship between Patricia and David. Does anyone know? Given the similar areas they work in I've always assumed there must be some relationship - brother and sister-in-law maybe?? I've personally had some concerns about the validity of David's work given the number of times I've seen things which appear to have been proven wrong. Perhaps my concerns are misplaced? And recently I've seen here the references to "3500 Years..." What do those who have seen it think of it's validity? Does the subjects which it covers which have been proven by others seem to match up? Are there any other sources which contribute in a significant way to this problem? (Significant is a lousy word here as any bit of data helps but I'm asking about sources which generally address some part of this family in this time frame - hope someone figures out what I'm trying to ask). Does anyone have a copy of James's will (not a transcription) which they could scan and send to me? I have received two transcriptions and they differ in some not so insignificant ways - would like to see the writing for myself. If so, thank you in advance. Seems to me some discussion of the availability and quality of sources would help towards getting all to at least understand each other's viewpoints and the interpretation of the information. Anyway, there's my two cents for working the problem. And I don't pretend to have worked it nearly as hard or as long as many of you so you're more than welcome to point out to me the error of my ways. With sincerity if not intelligence. One of her sisters, Melinda BURKS, married Joseph BURCHEM. I know the BURCHEM / HARPER families intermarried earlier in Virginia which makes me wonder if Mary's Grandmother wasn't a HARPER. Love to correspond with anyone descended from this family. Some left Mercer County, Kentucky for Monroe County, Indiana and my ancestors, along with some of the other siblings, migrated to Greencastle, Putnam County, Indiana. Here is Mary Burks ALBAUGH's obituary...which I found very interesting! The "The Democrat" in Greencastle, Putnam County, Indiana of 14 January 1893 published a sketch of Mary Harper Burks' life, from her own lips: " I was born", she said in reply to the reporter's query, "on Salt Creek, in Washington County, Kentucky on November 10, 1800; but my parents moved to Mercer County when I was but a brat. Being the oldest of fourteen children, I had little educational advantages as I had to remain at home and help with the work while the younger ones attended school. Three of the children are yet alive. My parents lived to be very old people. My Father was a soldier when a very young man and served under General "Mad" Anthony Wayne. My maiden name was Mary Harper Burks. I married Peter Albaugh and came to Indiana over sixty years ago, shortly after my third son, Will, was born. All the rest are Hoosiers. We settled near Oakalla. Deer and other large game were already getting scarce. I can well remember the time when a dozen fine chickens would bring only 75 cents and a pound of butter could be bought for 6 cents." She lived to be 95 years, one month old. She was the mother of eleven children, nine of whom are still living as follows: John, Ed, Will, Phil, Henry, Mrs. Nannie Moss (or Goss), Mrs. Jane Fisher, and Misses Sarah and Addie. There are twenty-one grandchildren and thirty-five great-grandchildren. Her husband died in 186l and since that time her home has been with her two devoted daughtes, Misses Sarah and Addie. She was a member of the Baptist Church for nearly 30 years. The funeral occurred at 10 o'clock Friday morning. Rev. J. E. sherrill of Danville conducting the services. Any help appreciated! 3. Roll Call: I have an Elizabeth Hatfield who was married to John Burk probably in Indiana. They had three sons, William H., born 1833 in Indiana, John Alonzo born 1835 in Indiana and Aaron born 1837 in Sangamon Co. Illinois. Elizabeth Burk was in the 1840 census of Putnam Co. Indiana, as a single person for her husband had died; when I don't know. After that she went back to Sangamon Co. Illinois with her three sons and joined a wagon train in 1841 headed to Texas. She came to Fannin County, Texas in 1841 and married an E. Hamilton in 1842. He was in law enforcement and was killed soon after. In January 1842 she married Campbell Seal and they had five children. Her son John Alonzo Burk, my ancestor, married Mary Ann Price in 1859 and they lived most of their lives in Denton Co. Texas. He served in the civil war from Texas. This line is documented in the IGI.) I am tracing the Helen BURKE line as her marriage to E E BROWN produced two daughters, Ursula, still living and Jean (b. 25 Sept 1909, d. 11 Dec 1957). Helen divorced sometime in about 1910/11/12? Jean married John N. FETZER of North Liberty, St. Joseph, IN on 3 August 1932 in Chicago. They had 4 daughters all of whom are living. I do not have any information about Lewis' parents nor Christina's. Lewis could have been a BURK who became a BURKE! Cheers! Jeffrey L.
